'Survivor 13: Cook Islands' Casting/Twist Bulletin

Well, it should be interesting, and it's sure to be controversial.

The tribes are split into ethnicities or race - Asian, African-American, Hispanic and White.

There are 20 castaways this season, the tribes have 5 each.

In looking at them on The Early Show, I predict JP will be the teen hearthrob. I'll post a write up on the cast when the CBS website updates.

Eek.

That is just ridiculous. If it seems like they type-cast for any race, or if they purposely picked strong/weak players for each race, a lot of people are going to be upset and angry with cbs. gutsy move on their part. i'm sure people will now watch because of it, but quite an un-PC move to try and gain viewership.

Thanks J, u are quick! Can't believe u were up at 4, and are up right now! get some sleep :)

I think it's GREAT !!! Go survivor. This just shows by comments how narrow minded most people are. As Jeff said : It still comes down to "Who do you like ?"

I assume since there is just one other comment, u are reffering to me as being narrow-minded. (and one common does not lend to "most" people being narrow-minded)Obviously, thousands and thousands of people apply to get on survivor, and i am sure that the producers are capable of picking people of equal talent/strength/ intelligence/beauty. So, if they portray one group as stupid, or another particulary strong, that it has obviously, most likely been done on purpose. And as a minority, I am used to being looked at in a certain light, so whatever happens on the show won't bother me, (and i have always been a survivor fan, and just because i am saying this doesn't mean that I particularly bothered by the casting) but a lot of others may be upset and angry about it.
IF you carefully read my comment, i did say, "IF it seems like they type-cast for any race, or IF they purposely picked strong/weak players for each race, A LOT OF PEOPLE are going to be upset and angry with cbs."
My main point was that splitting up people based on any social factor is bound to make someone upset.

People let's keep in mind that these blogs are about the show and comments should be about the show and not directed at each other or the GREAT JACKIE just may have to DELETE you.

boy, there should be controvery ahead for sure...but when I watched Amazing race they had teams of all different ethnic and sexual orientations and that didnt effect my watching it. I fell for the teams as people .....
just glad I can get your Blog on this Jackie! you ROck!!

i am white and i am not real thrilled about breaking teams up into ethnicity. i think it crosses the line in good taste. i have watched every survivor and i wont watch this if it has that feel to it. there is so much disdain on these reality shows and this just seems distastful to me. i cant imagine executives buying into this concept. all shows are ethnically diverse but not pitted in teams of ethnicity. good god thats what alot of these gangs in california are all about. and it is juvenile and sad.

I think this is a great idea. It is a hell of a lot more fair than what they did last year (splitting them into young men, older men, young women, and older women). Granted the younger men didn't actually do that great of a job, but in general when you put the older women against the younger men in a physical competition, they have very little chance of winning. That isn't being mean on my part, that is just the facts of each group physical capabilities. This way they are dividing it this year, at least isn't making one team any stronger or weaker than any other team. This is even more fair than when they would make two tribes and divide them into men and women. And people have complained since the beginning of Survivor that each season there were usually no more than three non-white people. So, this solves that problem.
People are definately going to cause a stink about it and it is going to be a "controversy", but people would have done the same if they hadn't brought more diversity into the game. It is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.
But I think it will make it a good season. I can't wait!!! I didn't realize it was starting so soon. I pretty much watch CBS exclusively and I haven't seen any commercials for it yet. Maybe I am just fast forwarding through them on my TiVo and aren't noticing them zoom by.

what is cbs thinking?? I thought segregation went out in the 60's {or 50"s]hard to belive they would seperate the races,,and make them rivals.
its a crazy world..

I think they will end up mixing up the tribes at some point. They always changeup the game at unexpected times. It should be interesting to watch. When does Survivor start airing again?

This is the article I read about the new Survivor A Racy Twist for "Survivor". I think it's a great idea. Nobody had a problem when Survivor or The Apprentice split their teams into men vs. women. Haven't we been having that fight forever too? As far as I'm concerned, if the contestants don't have a problem with it then neither do I. May the best PERSON win.

The teams probably won't be separated in this way for too long- like last season when the groups formed two tribes after just a few shows.

I personally don't understand what the point is (just like last season). I'm assuming they are just coming up with new ideas to keep the show interesting.

I do think it'll be interesting to watch...I don't think it has to *mean* anything if we don't make it mean anything. They are teams of five, and even if one of the teams seems to triumph over the other teams, surely we can all agree that 5 people certainly don't speak for an entire race. It really is about the individuals in this game...

BTW Jackie, I keep reading about LOST here...are you for sure blogging about LOST, or are you still deciding whether or not to do so? I for one am hoping that you do- I think the comments area can be fascnating as we all pick up on different things...Thanks for your blog!

Survivor. We're going to have contrived hysteria, most probably from contrived racism. Stupid. But knowing this I'm going to watch. Survivor is the best. And Mark Burnett rocks.

Tiffy - Once BB stops occupying every waking free minute of my time, I'll be blogging The Amazing Race, Survivor and LOST here on this blog on a regular basis.

My only real concern about blogging LOST is that it's so easy to miss clues and such. So I'll be depending on the commenters to fill in with their thoughts and theories. Of all the shows I watch, that's the one which is going to be the most challenging as there are so many questions unanswered and clues to the answers. But I have you guys, so I won't be alone!

I think that this is the point of dividing the teams this way:

It will show that race is not as important as many people think. The tribes will go through the same things, handle things the same, etc...

By separating them this way, it will make a bigger point that when you break things down to the very basic of human elements (as Survivor does), race means nothing.

I think it will be more troubling if a big deal is made of this.

Jackie, Cook Islands is almost here! Aren't you glad it's only on once a week with no live feeds? :)
Now I can't wait to see JP. Whoohoo! I'm sure there must be a hearthrob for the guys, too. ;)
Pitting race against race is oh so risky. YIKES! The blog and the boards will be steaming. Are you up for it? I know you will be. LOL!
The shows you blog must have huge ratings because of your great work.
Too bad you can't get a percentage. ;)
Looking forward to all the insider info on your S13 blog.

I am 35% African American, 25% American Indian, 25%Scottish, and 15% German.

Yes, as I grew up I was called a Zebra, Oreo, 1/2 bred, and many I can't say in this comment.
I had to defend myself many times from people wanting to fight me because of the way I looked on the outside, or rather when people found out what my race was, not because of who I was on the inside.
More people thought by looking at me that I was Hispanic.
I can't see how this can be constructive to help bring people together. If my 35% win "African American" my other parts will be saying, oh you are bred to be more athletic. If my 40% win "Scottish and German" then they will be saying we won because we are smarter than you. I will just be confused if the Hispanic win. And if the Asian win I will just be mad. Because they are smarter than everyone else.
Yes, I am making a joke at the end of this comment but the fact remains the same, that this can not bring people together.
Even if teams are put together later the past shows have showed us that if they wait to long to merge the teams they keep their allience to their 1st team. Which will only cause more problems.
And teams being split by gender is different than being split by race, because the equality of woman has be accepted more than the equality of race.

Even today we still have problems with race.
When was the last time men and women fought in the streets, or when was the last that women marched in the streets for equality.
KKK still march and skin heads march and yes blacks still march. And when this happens, fights happen.
I just cann't see much good coming from this.

This is a direct quote by Jeff Probst from the article I posted earlier "Our original idea was simply to have the most ethnically diverse group of people on TV. It wasn't until we got to casting and started noticing this theme of ethnic pride that we started thinking, 'Wow, if culture is still playing such a big part in these people's lives, that's our idea. Let's divide them based on ethnicity,' " he said.

I totally agree with the ethnic pride comment. We get so caught up in the race wars that we forget that people from the same race share similarities and they should be embraced and celebrated. I for one am Polish and would love to play a game with other Polacks. Imagine the fun you'd have watching us...and I wouldn't be offended if you laughed and made up some new Polack jokes :)

To me racial jokes are bad, but just because it doesn't bother you doesn't mean it not a form of racism.

I love it, I love it, I love it. Personally I see this as a big "DUH" to society. I mean, all we have ever been taught is to be acceptant of everyone, no matter what race, gender, etc. Though in reality, when we step out of our learning environments, we stick to our "types". I see that as more "racist" than dividing people into groups.

When I went to college(8yrs ago), after years of being taught acceptance, they offered students different types of living. There was the muslim house, the unity house(for african americans), the art house, the rainbow house.....well you get the picture. Totally set back all we had learned by letting students choose to segregate themselves. AND THEY DID!!!!!! If people want to do it on their own, who are we to say that mark burnett can't?

Finally their will be no more "they only want white people" comments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've done message board hosting for Survivor topics since the 1st season and a common complaint is the lack of diversity. So, in that respect, this season should be interesting. That said, I hope they don't keep the divide too long into the season. I'd rather see different folks work together rather than against each other.

I hope with this Season of Survivor more ethnic groups apply to be on the show. Hopefully this will cut down on some racially stereotypes. They all have to eat, sleep and play in the exact same conditions. Survivor does not bend the rules for nobody. Remember the person who had one leg. He did really good. Eventually the tribes will become two and then one and hopefully the tribes will be racially mixed especially when it comes down to two tribes. I also hope that they do not combine the tribes in two tribes too fast like they did last time. They had 4 tribes and it went down to two after the first airing. Give the audience time to get to know the people first and then merge.

so many are saying, survivor is doing this because many have complained about a lack of diversity on the show. ALL THIS DOES IS SHOW A LACK OF DIVERSITY BY SEGREGATING PEOPLE BASED ON RACE! HELLLLLLOOOO!!!!!
if they wanted to be TRULY DIVERSE, each team would be comprised of multiculturally diverse individuals.
