'Big Brother 7: All Stars' - Reflections On A Season And A Finale

I've said it before with other reality shows - I'm not too keen on "All Star" seasons and I often really don't want to see people I've previously watched competing once again. Okay. That said, the hook for this season for me (other than the fact that I'm a Big Brother addict) was Will Kirby. A Big Brother All Stars version had to have him or I couldn't consider it "All Stars." In his season, I rooted for him. In this season, I sat back and marvelled at his ability to charm and manipulate his way through the crowd.

Sure, it was so cool to see Chicken George once again and I didn't see enough of Nakomis. I personally could have done without seeing Diane, Erika or Mike Boogie at all. Several of the players fell in the middle for me. I understand why they were chosen, but they weren't my season favorites -- Jase, James, and Alison. While I think Kaysar is probably a great guy, he's not a schemer and it showed with his lackluster performance on the show this season.

Then there's Danielle, a woman I thought was only second to Dr. Will in gameplay. I was disappointed with her choice of allies and a few personal errors she made this season. She could have done so much better. Howie imploded this season. He was never a real strong player, more of a follower. Alas, his adolescent ways overcame him. I have seen him tender and thoughtful to others, but he let rage rule too much this season and it cast a bad light on him. Marcellas, once funny, seemed bitter and unhappy all season. Janelle, the buxom blonde America's Choice, played competitions so well, but fell flat whenever she had to make a decision albeit making it to the Final Four through her talent at winning competitions. Kudos to her.

But the cast is what it is, or for that matter, was what it was. I personally think that if not for the Will/Janelle Show and the Chill Town phone segments, this season wouldn't have any entertainment substance at all. The competitions were run-of-the-mill, the house had no excitement, no America's Choices per se, no luxury comps or cool doings. Compared to past seasons, these houseguests got diddley-squat. I don't know why, but they did. Again, it was up to the PuppetMaster to keep the season lively. And, he did. Thank you, Dr. Will.

The season itself had a few really dull weeks in its start as the houseguests sat around and talked of past seasons. Yawn. Once it went constantly topsy-turvy with the sides switching power, the POVs being used, alliances mixing, Chill Town using them all... it became intriguing. And, to whom can we credit that? I'd say Will Kirby. With the exception of the final two, I'd have to say the season was a success through fate alone... and Will. I just never liked Mike Boogie and Erika always seemed like more of a non-entity than a player to me.

But, I think the producers seriously have to examine some of the areas in which they fell short this season. If next season with new unknowns has the same boring days and nights, it will fall on its face. This season, it was dependent on the houseguests' personalities and past showing to make it. That won't cut it next season... and barely cut it this season. This season they concentrated too much on sensationalism and humiliation of the houseguests when all else failed.

While the show itself is one built for trickery and deceit, I personally don't care for the "mean" factor we saw when folks were evicted and in the finale itself when Mike Boogie's ways were exposed to Erika. Yes, they have to find out sometime. And, no, I don't care much for Erika, but that was almost to the point of cruelty on national television.

I realize that Big Brother isn't a huge cerebral kind of show, but they took it a step closer to the World Weekly News tabloid of TV shows when they do that sort of thing. It's all about sensationalism and I don't think that's why I enjoy the show at all. I actually enjoy watching folks interact with strangers. I enjoy seeing a Dr. Will use charisma to charm while telling folks he's lying all the time. I liked the days when the houseguests had no clocks, had no automatic washing machines, yet got luxuries in competitions that they really appreciated unlike the Will Farrell movie which, if memory serves, was the only luxury comp this season.

It's time for the producers to analyze what this season would have been if not for the personalities of the houseguests. It's time for them to step back from sensationalizing the show and go back to the more simple, non-cruel ways of strangers in a house.

My favorite part of the finale was watching Danielle smile through the Will/Mike Boogie phone call segments, including the one in which they talked about evicting her. You could see admiration for a game well-played in the eyes of all the jurors as they watched the phone call bits. That was "good television." And, of course, I credit Will... not his sidekick.

I also enjoyed Jase admitting there was a Mr. and Mrs. Smith alliance via a phone call blurb to Diane. Of course, that was a bit overshadowed by Chill Town.

The vote of 6 to 1 for the Mike Boogie win didn't surprise me at all. Will (of course) proved he's the Ultimate PuppetMaster and even said so. Yes, Mike turned on the gameplay and he proved he can win comps, but in the end... he's Will's sidekick. I personally don't care if he thinks he's not. Will could have done well in the show on his own, but Mike wouldn't have been there if not for Will and certainly wouldn't have won.

So, what's next? I'm sure to be watching next season, but hope the producers don't follow their same ways they did with this season. Will Janelle and Will get together? I haven't a clue, but I loved watching their flirtmance as it played out. They were like kids flirting and it was even kind of innocent and sweet. Will Erika go out with Mike? I doubt it. She's been used, abused and tossed to the side by Mike Nasty. I don't like her and I wouldn't have allowed myself in those shoes, but I can't imagine how horrified she is after going through that humiliation live on national television. Feh to Mike Boogie. He won, but in the long run... you reap what you sow. I'd personally rather be known for being a decent human being, not a user of others.

As for the blog this season, I've had a great time. This blog tied with last season's blog readership at around a half-million hits. I especially want to thank Sandy at AOL Television for linking the blog on promotional pages even though I moved on from the AOL Journals product. AOL Television rocks! And, of course, I want to thank Zoetawny for another season of cool graphics! A few folks wondered about us... we've never met in person. Zoetawny is West Coast, I'm East Coast. We "met" while I was hosting AOL Message Boards as a volunteer Community Leader there and she was a board poster. We're both still on AOL and involved on various show boards although I'm not hosting them any longer. Now that all the feeds are over, I'll have more time for the boards again!

And, most of all, I want to thank the readers and commenters here for making this blog the success it is. While the donations many made are certainly appreciated (and put to good use), if not for the community which developed in the comments area, this blog wouldn't be the success it is. I hope many of you stick around for other show blogging right here. I enjoy having you around!

Thank you all! And, yes... I still owe people email, I know! I ended up falling asleep last evening after the show and ended up sleeping until just when Mike Boogie, Erika and Julie Chen were on The Early Show. Thankfully, I'm off from work today as I tend to have Wednesdays off. If not, I would have had to explain to my boss that I like my bed better than my job! But, it was so nice to sleep and not worry about missing what was going on with the live feeds.

I stand in awe of you Jackie....you are the best. Your comments were right on and they need to be taken and heeded by cbs execs...evenif it means Les needs to have a talk with Julie....without Will and Janelle this would have fallen flat...and the competitions were in a sad state. they were bored, we were bored. if not for chicken George what can I say..he made me smile at the decency of my age group...
I will always be thankful for you and your blog.....standing Ovation out here in So Calif.

ah. the final is awful and depressing. The bad guys won and sexism was exploited to the max. It's so sad.. I wasted my time watching such a low life show.

Another thanks to you, Jackie. It was indeed a job well done.

Thanks jackie i had a blast with you!!! Found you on aol and was hooked. logged on first thing in the morning to have coffee with you! Maybe Janelle and Will should host bb8! They were the most charismatic couple in bb history!!! They are the ones Im gonna miss the most. Want them to have a happy ending

Hi Jackie, I missed the Early Show with Mike and Erika (which may have been subconsciously intentional) This final two was even more despicable than last years and incredibly Mike made me hate him even more with his disgusting displays of disrespect last night. He is so NOT a winner in my book. I have to wonder how his parents could sit there and smile like there were proud of him. There is a difference between being a devious, manipulative game player like Will and being a thoughtless, cruel, low class user like Mike. Anyway, sadly I still wonder what happened on The Early Show? Could you let us know?

Anonymous said...

Thanks Jackie . . .
I agree with you about how Erica was treated last night. I didn't care for her, but that whole display was unnessary. I enjoyed the show somewhat, but I don't know that I would have if not for your blog.

And to anyone but Jannelle - How can you dislike someone so much that you don't even know. They have medication for that sort of anger. I skip over your comments, but you seem to take this dislike to a rather extreme level . . . been wanting to say that for a while now. Sorry!

Thank you so much for the blog, Jackie. I first discovered it around mid season last year but followed it faithfully all this season. You made this season so much more interesting than it would have been otherwise. I enjoyed the show but was very disappointed with the final two. Oh, well, it is just a game and often the best player doesn't win. I am going to stay around the blog and I am looking forward to next season.

Jackie, thank god you wrote what you did today. Not only were we all wanting to know, but I hope that the BB producers would indeed be interested in all of the imporvements you offered for next year.
ABout to see J, E, and M come on the View in seconds... Oh my god, Rosie hates Boogie... she made Mike move over so she could not only sit next to Janelle, but put as much distance between he and herself as she could!!!!

I figured you collapsed last night. Everyone was writing comments after the finale, and when you isially are in the house, we didn't hear much from you! Well deserved sleep, girl!

Man watching the View!! did Roise go after Mike or what!!! it was great! have to find the a clip!

Anonymous said...

Hi Jackie. You, me, same wavelength! I cringed with the Erica clips, it even brought out some humanity in me towards her...something I hadn't been feeling so much lately. This show does eat away at the goodness in a person. I think the Evil vs Good twist was how those two emotions fueded within fan hearts. ( and you said it is not a cerebral game?)

But, on the flip side, I have always disliked the phony hypocrisy of the finales. Julie outed anyone who tried to pretend they were kind individuals who just evicted someone as part of a game. They could have made it worst by showing how deeply Erica believed Mike. They left her that exit, at least. This edition of BB showed its cruel side (from the producers) from the very first. I do not know if that is something the producers brought to the show for All Stars (meaning they should all know what to expect) or if it will be a trend for future BB.

The question we usually hear asked is, "Is it possible to play BB well and not lie?' The question, imo, should be, "Is it possible to play the game, with lies and all, and not be mean about it?" For a play on words, can a player diss the gamepiece and not the houseguest? Who knows?

I have been hearing some things about the finale and one of them is that the jury couldn't really hear (because of crowd noise) what the clips were saying. They will know by now.

Jackie, thank you. From your lips to BB producers ears, here's wishing. Sue

I loved it, way better than the feeds.

I's sure Will wasn't on because he was neither F2 (or F3) or America's winner of the 25k.

Jackie, thanks so much for doing this blog. It is the highlight of watching the show. I like your blog so much I am even considering watching Survivor just so I can follow along on your blog.

I totally agree with your comments about the season and last night's show. It really did not matter whether Mike or Erika won. They were not the true final two. Despite that, the attempts to humiliate Erika last night were low class.

I look forward to reading your live feed updates for next season.

BB HGs were the meanest last year when Maggie won. This year it was the producer's turn. Maybe the ratings were up the year of the fiendship. What do you loyal watcher's think?

Has anyone heard the rumors about the feeds continuing with replays and interviews? God help us!

Jackie, as usual, you did an outstanding job in your reflections segment, let's hope the producers take your advice. Thank you for your amazing reporting, I look forward to Survivor and Race.

Sabina, I can't agree more, BB needs to rethink using Julie Chen next season. Janelle and Will cohosting would be a hoot.

Thanks again Jackie - Eileen in CA

Oh my God, was Rosie a riot on the View this morning or what? She gave it to Booger with both barrels! The girls at the View even referred to him as "Booger" in the opening segment!

Booger looked so uncomfortable. You could tell he was praying for the segment to be over. It was very entertaining. The houseguests (Janie, Erika & Mike) really didn't say too much because they couldn't get a word in edge-wise with Rosie ranting and raving about Mike's despicable behavior. Rosie even commented that Mike's mother is probably appauled and who won't agree with that...? Kudos to Rosie...you go girl! It was nice to see the tables turn on Mike. And Erika, well you could tell that she was totally P.O.'d with Mike. She has to be totally humiliated after seeing those television clips last night. As for Janie, she looked like she was having a good ol' time. At least she has nothing to be ashamed of. Thanks Rosie, for an entertaining morning. It was better than some of the BB7 shows!

And finally, I just want to thank Jackie for keeping all of us informed throughout the summer. I give you lots of credit for sticking with it, especially this past week w/Booger & Erika. Your awesome!

Looking forward to your next blog!

jackie,

thank you kindly for all the updates. i "accidentally" found you after missing one week's worth of shows and got hooked on you, more than the show this year, in which i was quite disappointed.

i too AM SO NOT A fan of booger and was disappointed that my choice (janell) did not win the ig prize. i thought it was wrong that the producers played the james bad-mouthing/cursing janell bits as it seemed they were into humiliating the cast members.

in any event, i'll be visiting again, especially the LOST blog, because i am always lost watching LOST, but i L O V E it!

thanks again jackie.

Rosie refused to shake Mike's hand and moved everyone down on the couches so she wouldn't have to sit next to him. She really let him have it! I was so egging her on! Mike just looked sheepish-like he was proud of himself for being such a turd. Erika looked sad and deep into thought. Do read the transcript on www.jokersupdates.com. It was just too good! Jackie you did a fab job! You mentioned that without the Will/Janelle thing and the Will/phone call thing this would have been a much duller season. I've got to add you to that list. Without your timely, funny, patient, and persistent blogging this season would have a whole lot less entertaining. Thank you!

I will say that in general I'm not a huge fan of "reality" TV because I'm not a huge fan of the "humiliation-as-entertainment" thing they do. Both on the talent based shows as well as the strategy based shows meaness and humiliation are standard fare.

But the BB finale showing all of Erica's "I'm in love" clips and then showing her all of Boogie's "Erica is a whore" clips was a new low in reality programming. Julie Chen and her high powered husband should be embarrassed by that Jerry Springer moment.

The reality shows I do watch like Project Runway, Top Chef, and So You Think You Can Dance I watch to see sheer, raw, creative, talent. Unfortunately along with that I have to watch all the fights, the mean spirited confessions, and some really rude comments made by the judges.

Shows like BB and Survivor I watch for the comps, the interesting personalities, and in the case of Survivor; the scenery. The encouraged meanness between contestants and the enforced meanness of some of the comps I could easily do without.

I think this season I will be watching more shows with actors and scripts and fewer shows with real people. Speaking of which I can hardly, barely wait for Lost to start. Frankly Jackie I think you should blog all "my" shows: Lost, Prison Break, Weeds, Battlestar Galactica, and Boston Legal. Thanks!

Thank you Jackie for all your hard work. You make BB even more enjoyable. I agree Dr. Will was and still is the best BB player of all time (even hearing Jase and Nakomis say it on the finale was great). The show wouldn't have been near as enjoyable with him. Thank you again and I'll see you for TAR.

Anonymous said...

Jackie, thanks for all of your long hours and work on this blog.
It is so appreciated.

I agree with your thoughts about this season. I have enjoyed past seasons more because there was much less sensationalism and exploitation and the mean factor was less visible.

I disliked Mike Boogie so much because unlike Will, he was less manipulative and just plain cruel, mean and childish. I was no Erika fan but I would have much preferred that she win than Mike.

It was all in all, quite a disappointing season. I think Season 6 should have evicted Chilltown those first 4 weeks instead of worrying about Nakomis and Diane like they did.

But then if the HG had been smart and got rid of CT immediately, we would have lost out on the only excitement, Will the puppetmaster.

I would have liked to have seen Will and Maggie up against each other. Will is the master of manipulation, Maggie is the mistress of mind control. THAT could have been interesting. A battle royal.

The problem with this season was that everyone else in the house was susceptible to Will's manipulation. Things just ticked along. Stick Maggie in there, and there'd have been explosions.

Misc.:

The humiliation is outrageous.

The flirting was too much for me since they have significant others.

Luxury comps. Don't the prizes won by CT at that one POV comp count? I'm new to BB this season so I don't know the usual breakdown. Either way, I still hear you saying that other seasons gave more.

Thanks Jackie, I have enjoyed your blog for BB and will be staying around for all the others too! (Can't wait for LOST to start).
I agree with you about this season and about the show last night, I thought it was very untasteful of what they did to Erika, yes it is a game, but she is a human being. Let her watch the tapes on her own and view it in her own house, not on live tv in front of the world.
I didn't want either of them to win but agree it should have been boogie over erika.
Thanks again, I enjoyed.

Hi Jackie,

Thanks for all your updates. You did a good job. Just one question..."Feh to Mike Boogie" I have seen you use "feh" before. What does it mean?

Anonymous said...

I thought that Boogie (even though I was a Will or Jani fan) deserved to win...and I think he won becasue of his answers to the questions he answered honestly and made no apologies. Erica lied through her teeth and it was apparent to everyone that she was trying to take credit for things to make it appear that she had some kind of game play which she didn't.

I think that Will was making an effort not to show any feelings for Jani and he went so far the other way to the extreme that it made it look as though he were trying too hard and he must have some pretty strong feelings for her if he didn't he would have had been better at covering his feelings because he wouldn't have had any. It shouldn't have been that awkward..just my opinion.

I don't watch the Amazing Race but would if Will or jani were on it. I just want to see more of either of them or both.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jani and will hosting next year or better yet hosting/doing diary room interviews would be great!

Question....Didn't Nakomis come up with the whole "backdoor" policy?

Maybe a season where half are new comers and half are returning members but only one from each season....so no pre made alliances.

Anonymous said...

anon 3:57

"feh" is just a sound. say it outloud. That should help you understand what Jackie means by it.

Anonymous said...

I think you're a little too opinionated Jackie and aren't giving Mike enough credit. Will and Mike were dependent on each other. Mike deserved the win. I don't know why you are such a Mike-basher. He's probably one of the few on the show who will actually do something decent with his money (invest) and not blow it. Give credit where credit is due.

Anonymous said...

I have watched most all seasons...but for the life of me I cannot recall how the term ChillTown came to be? help
Also, did anyone besides me think Boogie really was into Erika early on and then....got mean. I can see flirty trick play.....but heavy heavy making out....and getting your sexual kicks....just out of the range of game play. I missed luxury challenges too....especially the clothing one.

Thanks Jackie, I think we can only agree on Will. It seems that I always Manage to like someone that goes against the grain, or dislike the popular ones. But, I will be back next year. Thank you so much for all the kind words, folks! You're giving me the warm fuzzies. :-)

Let me try to catch up a bit with comments...

Anon @ 11:03 - I believe some others have posted the YouTube video of today's Early Show segment. Overall, I didn't find it anywhere near as interesting as The View today.

Sue - I think you probably do have to lie and deceive to win at the game of Big Brother. But, yes, there's a difference between playing the game that way and doing it maliciously. Hopefully, even though he won, Mike may come to realize that he was very offensive. Will lied, but he did it altogether differently and I don't think the others are angry with him at all.

annie - Although she reamed him, I noticed that she ended up more joking towards the end of the bit. He handled it well for Mike Boogie, I guess. He has to realize that he offended many folks. Not that that will change him or hopefully we'll never know if it does because hopefully he'll never be on our TV sets again!

anon @ 12:42 - We can be LOST togther! One of the reasons I haven't attempted to blog LOST much in the past is because I miss so many clues and little things. However, if we have several eyes and folks chip in with comments, I think it could go very well!

Lilli - I'd love to blog all your shows, but... there isn't enough time! I have to work for a living! But, I'll be doing LOST right here on this blog and hope you'll stick around.

TBD - :-) I have a wee crush on Will myself even though he's SO not my type. Y'know, I bet he could make me feel like I was the prettiest girl in the storage room. Dang, he can be so charming that it should be illegal.

Anon @ 4:32 - I do give credit where credit's due. I give Will credit for Mike even being on the show and, therefore, for Mike's win.

Anon @ 5:11 - Spot on about the reason behind "Chill Town." It was indeed the nickname for their room in Season 2 due to the chilly temperatures!

Janie - I only caught that show a few times. Unfortunately, when I do the BB live feeds stuff... between work and the feeds/blog bit, I don't have the time to cover any other shows. Now that the feeds are done with, I can blog about other shows and more than one again.

Anon @ 5:18 - Yes, I'll be covering Survivor right here... no need to change any saved links. I'm eagerly anticipating tomorrow night's season premiere.

Hi Jackie,Didn't think I'd be back here tilll next year, but was watching "The View".& Low & Behold, who was on but MIke,Erika & Jani. They showed another clip from the Dr of Mike bashing Erika."Embarassing.He called her a HO agin & more or less said he used her.
Rosie was embarrassed for her.She asked Mike about it,He blamed it on Will being evicted.
Rosie more or less blasted Mike & said he embarrased hi Mother,& told EWrika the same thing.
Jani was just there I think to make it interesting.(who wnt's to watch 2 losers). They mentioned how Jani was America's choice & she was very pleased about it.They asked her if she had any future plans. She said not right now, she's going on vacation with her family.
Rosie told her she thought she & Will were sooo cute together.
Just wanted everyone to know about their appearance. As i said earlier,I don't think M & E could draw an audience Hence,Jani.

Thanks again jackie

I HAD TO STOP WATCHING THE VIEW. CANNOT BRING MYSELF TO LISTEN TO ROSIE. I stopped the week before she arrived, to be sure not to see or hear her.
She changes her whole being at the drop of a hat, just to be on any given show. As she did her own talk show.

I watched Housecalls with Marcelles today and for those who had hopes of a real life Janelle/Will connection, he dashed those hopes. He said if you had been there for the "round table" discussion when the jury asked the final two questions, Will really threw Janelle under the bus for a second time. He said Janelle was trying to be flirty with Will and he was doing everything he could to get as far away from her as he could. Sorry to those who were holding out hope for them (I was one of you), but it looks like Will was just an amazing actor and fooled us all.

GO CHILLTOWN!

Anonymous said...

Altho I am a big JANELLE FAN. love her on TV, and I think she is the all time Best Big Brother Player ever; even got the popular Puppetmaster out. "And, Wins it All with the Majority of the Fans, and more...
I could not believe she was so mad and blaming Erika for her own demise.
Janelle has to take responsibility for her not Winning. That Blame goes to her alone.

As for the Jury, they were played ALL THE WAY TO PAY DAY.

In the Jury, they are still part of the game. talking and figuring things out.
6 of these players had the Biggest Opportunity, to show ChillTown that they did not play as well as they thought: Because you guys Did Not get the half million.

But, No, these 6 could not get out of being played, lol They gave the sleeze the Big Win... lol that is so funny to me..
I was hoping they would thumb their nose at those 2 and show them they didn't play quite as well as they thought.
But no the 6 stayed as played players till the exact end.

Why should they dislike Erika so much, she did what they all did... played the game each day according to what was thrown at her.

now about body language .. Wills body language showed Janelle: "I am not with you, I am with Erin".. he kept his arms together, and leaned away from her all thruout sequester once Janelle arrived....Janelle wake up!

and the look on Wills face When Erika said "her big thing was talking Janelle to PUT Will OUT." That look was Priceless. Will wanted so bad to go down in BB History as the only player to Win the Big One twice.

he wasn't for Boogie Winning, not until he had No Chance Himself.

I wonder how Danelles family feels about her drinking so much. So much that she broke down cryimg a couple of times.

She really did go off the deep end at one point.

Here is my take on Will and Janelle. I think that Will has never met another woman like Janelle. He even said that while in the house. All season, he seemed bemused when speaking of her. He said something like she is this hard-ass competitor and also a soft girl who gets her feelings hurt. Although, in typical Will fashion he said it much better than I just did.

I think Will's body language (which he states he is expert at reading btw) showed a little more than we hear reported. After all, he didn't move, did he. What? you think BB told him where to sit and he was afraid to move? This is the Will who broke every rule they threw at him all summer. I'm sure BB assigned him a seat, but he kept it. He put his arm along the back of the sofa. His body language to me was shouting No No Yes.
He could have pulled a Rosie and rearranged seating. I read it as, ' I want to be near the most vibrant woman I have ever known and not jeopardize my relationship with my girlfriend to do it'.

I say his body language last night (coupled with an eye contact or two) says, I love my girlfriend and my life is smooth sailing, and I don't want to make any waves....but, just let me near Janelle for a while. I'll do all I can to appear like she is just someone from the show, but let me sit next to her.

Will and Janelle would never make a sucessful couple, but it sure is fun to see them together. A Romance Novel with the buxom blonde and the dashing dark haired doctor. Will Janelle? or won't she? that sort of formula writing.

Also, on to something different. Boogie said today (was it with Rosie?) that it is against the rules to share the money.

bb7dish has cute pictures of Will and Janelle at the wrap party last night. They are sitting together in the lounge chair and he is whispering to her again! The next shot, his arm is around her and they are staring in each other eyes. Realplayer blog has an interview with Janelle, where she is asked if she would give Will a second chance. Will, up hearing this comes up and put her arm around her to hear the answer. She says she would. Just as I started to believe they were just friends and it was just a flirtmance, now I don't know. I have some hope again!
Will said he will be Dr. 90210 in november and december(not really sure what that is), he will be on the Young and the restless on October 23rd, and he will be on the Tyra Banks show. He also said he is in talks with CBS to do the amazing race next summer with Boogie.
I think we should all write in to CBS and tell them, no Boogie, we want Will and Janelle to do the amazing race. That would be so much fun to watch.
Thanks for a great season Jackie!

YOU made this season more so than Will.

Thanks for keeping us informed!

Here is a suggestion for future BB's. Instead of coming up with "twists" that never materialize such as the dual HOH twist or the Coup D' Tat twist why not up the ante of the POV so that the POV holder also chooses the replacement nominee. To me it's a win win for the show and the players because it makes it more difficult to manipulate a back door plan and creates more intrigue in the nominations. Spread the word and let us reap what we sow before we have another spool of lies. Here's hoping BB8 is better than All Stars.

The great thing is your blog reached that 1/2 mil mark...awesome!!! Thanks for persevering through all of it for us.

On a personal note, a little irony, this year I am out of work (since 09/08) with a torn cartilage in my right knee (surgery...maybe). SOOO guess who will be hanging around a little bit more to help with the LOST clues, and TAR and Survivor shows/blogs.

From Ready

Thank you Jackie, especially for your comments directed to the producers about the "mean spirited" tone of the editing in the finale. I followed the season but found the finale disgusting. There was absolutely no need for the targeted attack on Erika. I have written to several of the shows commercial sponsors. I hope CBS rethinks what it thinks is "entertainment". Personal attacks and humiliation are NOT entertaining.

P>S> I bet the producers read your blog - If not, they sure should.

Anonymous said...

Okay Jackie - My last comment - I was just reading through some other comments and have some really good ideas for the BB execs..
1. Ditch Julie Chen. She still needs cue cards for god's sake and she blew that last comp by not giving directions appropriately.
2. Replace Julie with Will and/or Janelle.
3. For next season, instead of the HOH picking the replacement nominee, have the POV winner pick the replacement.
4. Do NOT humiliate people on live television!!! That was just so wrong!!
Thanks so much!
Cyndi

Thanks Jackie for everything you've done this season. The show would have been flat and tough to follow had it not been for you.

I hope you will consider blogging one more show that was previewed on AOL television yesterday: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Terrific! One I know I will watch.

Regarding All Stars. I think CBS held all stars partly because of the popularity of Janelle-Kaysar-Howie-James last year. They were a shoe-in for an All-Stars game since they were so fresh in viewers minds. My favorite has always been Janelle because she is so competent at competitions and because of her vulnerability. She is a person I would like in real life. Kaysar too, but he is too honest in a game that promotes dishonesty to get very far.

Unlike you, I dispised Will in his season. That was early in the game's history and I felt that lieing was not a good strategy. I voted for him to be in all-stars, however, because he was entertaining then and I figured he would put some spice in the show. I thought they would evict him early on. Mike to me has always been forgettable. Erika too. They make a good pair.

I would love to see CBS do something different with BB next year. Something like banning lieing. Better yet, for every lie someone tells, $1000 is deducted from the 1/2 million they would win, and all of the houseguests get to see how many lies are accumulating for the other players.

One other thing I missed this year were pets. I loved the season of pugs.

Anyway, thanks again Jackie to you and all the commenters. It has been fun. -- ABIGAL

Anyway, have a good break off of BB7 Jackie, you're an awesome person!

Anonymous said...

I just had to stop by today, didn't I?! I mean it is Thursday...live show day. It is another true sign that the seasons are changing. Cooler temps, leaves change, school starts and BB isover. So I read the comments just for nostalgia.

True Rosie was hard on Mike and gave Erica a pass...but what if Mike goes on The Man Show? The focus would change...hope he doesn't. I'm thinking Boogie hasn't watched much of Rosie or the View or thought it being women they would fawn on him. His ego will rebound. I wonder if they fixed his ear before he flew to NYC?

I like the ideas for changes. The Veto as it is, has become way too predictible. I think they need a special one (especially with the owner of it deciding who goes) but some wheel of chance to spin to decide which style veto is used at each ceremony. That would keep everyone from planning ahead what to do.

I don't think they can ban lies, but what a good idea for a competition. About half way into the season, when everyone has already made multiple alliances, bring in a line of lie detectors..hook up the hgs..and ask simple questions. This year it could have been who won the $5000 that Woogie said Marci won when really they did.

Okay that is it for me. I just had to have a reason to type 'Woogie' one more time.

Thanks Jackie, Mary

Good morning! Since BB7 is finally over and Survivor doesn't start until tonight I would like to comment on DWTS. I know you don't blog Dancing With the Stars, but did anyone out there watch it last night? Come on America....Jerry Springer in the TOP 4!?!?! Even he was embarassed by the vote. I think his words were "This is stupid". He needs to stick with hosting a talk show(if that's what you can call it). Mario Lopez was hot, hot, hot and was voted in the middle of the group.Maybe next week more people will vote and get it right. Big Brother is a game of skill and luck. It becomes most entertaining as better players try to anticipate and minimize the effect of luck, and position themselves to control events when occasional surprises occur.

Since no one can control too many surprises, the more luck you inject into the game now, the more you'd bring down its flagging entertainment potential.

If there are changes in the rules, they should cause HGs to play the game, and not try to float through it. The POV rule change proposed earlier would simply allow some lucky floater to nominate a genuine player. By empowering floaters, I think that change would dilute the value of real strategy, and thus further weaken the show as entertainment.

A rule change I might (just might) think about would be a "Big Brother Eviction", where the producers occasionally simply take the deadwood out of the house. If they had done that earlier on with, say, George, Erika, and Marcellas, other players like Danielle and Diane, fearing a similar demise, might have stepped up their game.

To me, it's very interesting to watch crafty players like Will and Danielle survive by working to control the game. It's frustrating (and just barely acceptable) to see someone like Janelle survive by knowing the most trivia about slop.

As a viewer, you expect genuinely good (i.e. entertaining) TV. The producers should understand that it's silly for us to waste time watching players that have too little incentive (or ability) to really play.

Just watched the Rosie interview from yesterday, and it was SO great! Actually, I was wishing she had been harder on him, because she seemed somewhat tongue-in-cheek to me.

Isn't it Will and Janelle's choice to do The Amazing Race together? Big Brother 7 is over, this isn't a America's Choice thing... 4. Do NOT humiliate people on live television!!!
Good idea.

Julie seemed in over her head this year. Maybe she was ill-prepared, and maybe the whole ship wasn't as tightly run as before (all those defective game props would indicate that). But she really stooped to some new lows.

Outside of competitions, Janelle in many ways comes off as an air-head. She doesn't seem adroit enough to handle interviews, nor firm enough to handle difficult houseguests. They could probably find some appropriate regular role for her, though.

Will would be a hoot as host, especially in going over evictees' strategies that worked and didn't work. He could also appear as an analyst. Maybe he and Mike could do a weekly phone call skit about the smart and dumb plays the houseguests make.

With regard to Will and Janelle/Boogie on TAR.....good luck to them. Erika is part of the casting team for that show and she has said there is no way they will ever be on it!! It will be interesting to see what happens especially since TAR has already had someone from BB on the show. I love TAR because the contestants control their own fate(nobody gets to evict them) and yet it is still a reality show. BB7 was a big dissappointment and CBS should fire whoever thought the public humilation of Erika was "good TV". Erika did enough of this herself but to throw it in her face....shame on you CBS.

I agree that this season was about Will and Janelle.

Although Will was kicked out, he won this game. I loved that he told it to Erika as he put in his key "you can call me puppetmaster, one last time". She THOUGHT she was, but she isn't even in the same country as the puppetmaster

Although I don't wish Erika's humiliation on anyone, I do think she isn't as innocent as everyone wants her to be. Woman can't be exploited unless they allow themselves to be. Erika is not innocent in the Boogie seduction of her. For those who feel sorry for her being duped on national TV, keep in mind she knew the risks. She was the one who got naked with him knowing the internet would see it, etc. There has been enough reality TV humiliations out there to know the risks. I would never go on a reality show because I know my persona will be out of my control. I don't pity her as she is an adult who signed the contract knowing that editing could make her look great or evil

Btw, I watched the Rosie show. Rosie was more playfully mean, than outright mean!. She was smirking and stuff. I don't think she likes him, but it seems more playful. She even admitted that she might like him under other circumstances. This might an example where you needed to watch it and not just read about it to understand

7:18,

I disagree. I think Will's intention was always to help Boogie. ALthough I am sure he would not have turned down another 500,000, he was GEUNINUELY happy for Boogie. You could see that in his expressions. I do think Will still feels he won since CT won. In his own way, he did get another victory

12:45,

Will IS going to be on Dr 90210, he already filmed it prior to going into the house. He talked about it on the feeds. He has a segment where he does a laser tatoo removal (I think)

Hey Will how are you doing.

Hello again. I had earlier proposed a change to the POV whereby the POV winner should be the one who chooses the replacement nominee. It seems that some people here agree with my thinking while there was some argument against my idea because:

If there are changes in the rules, they should cause HGs to play the game, and not try to float through it. The POV rule change proposed earlier would simply allow some lucky floater to nominate a genuine player. By empowering floaters, I think that change would dilute the value of real strategy, and thus further weaken the show as entertainment.
***********************************
Now my point exactly. What qualifies somebody as a floater? To me it means by definition they are not involved in the gameplay of the house. If they win the POV they obviously are NOT a floater. Floaters do NOT win competitions. There is a difference between being a floater and being dead wood.

There are many ways to skin a cat. It's not luck if you win a competition. What my proposal allows is not so much increasing the randomness of luck but increases the value of the competitions therefore ensuring more active participation and less floatage.

Discuss the Platinum POV.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well, deadwood becomes driftwood--a pretty good floater.

In BB, a "floater" is one who keeps his or her options open on alliances, hoping to advance quietly under the radar. If done skillfully, that can be entertaining, but those players are usually deadwood.

A POV winner who could nominate someone else would have greater power than the HOH.

To make the game interesting, you'd want the POV winner to be able to undermine, but not necessarily dominate, the HOH's control. After all, the core game should and does revolve around HOH strategy--winning it, or strategically throwing it and manipulating the person who wins.

This is overcomplicating, but might be interesting: Allow the POV winner to veto both nominations, and nominate one person. If they used the veto, however, the POV winner would then take the other seat on the block.

My suggestion was to INCREASE the likelihood that vetos would be used and therefore make the competitions more competitive because no one could be entirely sure that they would remain safe. Your suggestion would effectively ensure that the veto would NOT be used.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the POV increasing in strength at the expense of the HOH. The HOH still would be safe and would also have the HOH bedroom. Having the POV holder make the replacement nomination would simply alter the strategies that have been used in the game up to this point. I think that is what BB7 was attempting to do with the dual HOH and the Coup D'Tat power both of which fizzled because there wasn't an advantage to use the powers.

A twist is just a straight line if it remains unused. The whole point of changing things would be to increase the entertainment factor. Who gives a hooie who wins the game as long as they keep us entertained while doing so.
