TV Newsy Bits - Monday, October 16, 2006

It's Monday! That means I watched How I Met Your Mother and Heroes. Yes, I watched The Class, but I'm writing that one off a bit. Well, maybe not. I don't know. The jury is still out on that one for me. (And I also got a summons to do actual jury duty today. Hopefully it's a television show jury! Yeah, right.) I tried once again with Studio 60 and it's just not keeping my interest. I ended up turning to the earlier news and plan to hit the sack a bit early. After all, Letterman is a rerun tonight.

In Blog TV News, don't forget there are show discussion posts for people following AOL GoldRush, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and the odd bedfellows of Nip/Tuck and The Bachelor. If you're following the AOL contest and want to talk clues, or if you're a fan of any of those shows - drop on in! There are some great folks talking about 'em! The links are also located in the right sidebar of my main blog page.

In other TV news, here's the Link o' Interest I've found:
  • Janelle and Will from Big Brother 7: All Stars will be doing a Jokers Update chat next Thursday, Oct. 26.
  • In-depth info on next week's Amazing Race episode. Minor spoilers, beware.
  • What? You haven't had enough of Boston Rob (Survivor, TAR, etc.)? Check out his latest TV adventure.

Jackie -

I got called once for jury duty when I lived in LA ...

We were just told that we'd have to be sequestered for six or more months, that this was a case of two brothers from the valley who allegedly shot and killed their parents etc,... The Nancy Drew in me (or Kinsey Milhone?) wanted to get in there and really see a case from the front lines, but in the end, they said we might be asked to deliver the death pentaly, and that was something I'd have to live with. Considering how the jury often does not get all the facts presented, I knew I couldn't do it, so I turned it down.

That ended up being a very famous trial that wall all over TV -- so, you never know what you may l get!

I've never in my 59 years ever been called for jury duty, and I think I would like to. But not sure I could deal with a capital murder case either. When you read all those accounts about wrongful verdicts,it makes you stop and think.AND there ARE DA's and lawyers that will do almost anything to win a case, and that's just wrong.

Jackie,I tried HEROES,mainly because you seem to really like it,and just can't get into it. Maybe it's because I don't know enough back story. And what's with them running reruns of Gray's already,in fact, alot of the networks are next week! Is it because tof the World Series being on,so they don't want to waste episodes??? Cause I really don't care who is in the series,I won't be watching and that sucks that they are pulling that!!!

Last night I watched WifeSwap, for lack of anything else(yikes,it's still bad)and then went over to Bravo and watched Six Feet Under, even though I had rented it and watched these epis a while ago.I need to get some more of them,as I left off at the third season and my hubby likes the DVD's with all the risque shots they don't show on Bravo....lol.

I was on a jury for a murder trial in Fort Lauderdale, FL. There were two guys on trial. They actually showed a picture of the dead man. The prosecutor's best witness was a coccaine addict who they lost in the morning, when she was supposed to testify. (They had put her up in a hotel somewhere and she just left).

By the time they found her she was totally wasted. And so, because she wasn't a good witness (she could hardly talk, slurring her words), we, the Jury, couldn't really believe her "beyond a reasonable doubt" so within 25 minutes of going to deliberate, we had a verdict.

They had ordered our lunch, so they asked us to eat and then they would resume the trial. LOL

We knew they did it, but had to find them not guilty.

The judge talked with us after, asking us how many of us really thought they were guilty and we all did. He said it was unfortunate, but that we did the right thing, because the prosecution couldn't prove their case.

It was interesting...don't want to do it again.

All trials are not criminal cases. I served on a jury to decide a case of alleged incompetence by an attorney. I was called for jury duty on two other cases but did not get selected for the jury. Jackie, the easiest way to not get picked is to state during voir dire that both pot and prostitution should be legalized (a number of folks will agree with you). Actually expressing any strong opinions during voir dire will usually get you excused from jury duty. Attorneys want malleable minds on the jury.

Interesting stuff. All of your stories of bad witnesses and misinformation is exactly why I felt I could not hand out a death penalty with any certainty, assuming I could somehow ever feel comfrotable taking such responsibility even if I was sure.

When watching things like OJ's case, finding we the public get all this info that will be withheld from thejury due to some loophole, it's really discouraging to think of being a juror. I also serve once and it was very much like meb's -- And it was a drag how many wanted to just vote with majority after an hour just to go home!!!

BUT, I have never tried to get out of jury duty like so many of my friends. because what if it were them, or me up there... it's supposed to be a jury of your peers. I show up because it's still a duty, something small I can do to serve my country, for all it's faults. When I wish our system ran better, I travel around the world and see how much better ours is than in 90% of the world!

I did serve GRAND jury duty for 2 weeks. There everything was working and fair. You review cases and set what charges there will be after hearing details from cops, witnesses, victims.

Sydney......tried Studio 60 for 2 weeks and could not get into it and have let it go. For some reason,I just don't care for Matthew Perry(he was my least favorite "Friend")and don't like him in this. And is it just me,or has he aged considerably since Friends? I do like the Amanda Peet character, but how unrealistic is that picture????

The other show that I hope bombs is that 30 Rock. Have not watched it and never would because that big piece of poop,Baldwin is on there and I hate him with a passion. He is a lousy actor and not much of a human being and I thought he was leaving the country if Bush won,so why is he still here. Hope it goes down in flames...sorry,just venting my opinion!!!

Sydney..Yes, I'm watching Studio 60 and I really like it. I thought last week's production # was well directed and hilarious. And I like the show itself because it's so quick. You have to be alert, or you're missing something important. There are a lot of characters you have to learn, so you really have to stick with it. I plan to.

Sharon..."big piece of poop,Baldwin" LOVE IT!!! I can't stand him either... and your commentary re why is he still in the country ... LMAO!!! Your opinion is my opinion exactly...

Anyone... re Bachelor... did you see the previews where the "witch" Erica is coming back next week????? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I thought we were rid of her.

Just typed the word verification and had to come back up here and ask: The word happened to be "Twtzs" .. Oh no..Jackie...are you trying to tell me something? LOL

what about Six Degrees or Ugly Better?

I like Heroes, especially Hiro, but it's moving a little slowly for my taste. Hiro gets to Vegas, uses powers to make money, and apparently transports from the future to the now. That's it? Suresh warns one brother and meets the other. That's it? Alter ego woman beats up another goon and adds to her behavior whoring. That's it? You get the idea.

I'd have been at the nuclear explosion by now.

It's just a "Petit Juror" summons. I've been called for jury duty twice before - once in CT, once in NJ. Neither time was I chosen to actually be on a jury. If I get chosen, it would most likely be a rather short trial and could be either civil or criminal. I don't mind going. The last time I went, I wrote about it even though I never made the jury. It isn't until December, so we'll see. If nothing else, I'll bring along a good book like I did the last time.

Do you think EVERYBODY MUST DIE by Lawrence Block would be appropriate?

;-)

And, MEB... TWTZS? Heehee! And, no... it certainly is NOT fitting!

Justene - I think I'd like a series just about Hiro traveling around exploring places with his powers.

Lyss... You should check out the Unit and Criminal Minds on Tuesday nights. Both are good shows. Also, House is still a good bet, although they're doing reruns. And of course, Dancing With the Stars...yess... I watch DWTS! I admit it. You haven't lived until you've seen Jerry Springer pretend to dance. His fan base is keeping him there, but it's not fair to the other dancers who are actually pretty good.

OK.. so much for my Tuesday night at the TV.

Lyss...I know what you mean about House (hot)??? Can't see it. Some of these guys who don't shave often can really look sexy...House isn't one of them.

I watch all the letter shows too. I like drama and reserve Funniest Home Videos for my comedy fix.

Lost and Jericho! YEAH!!! You and I must watch all the same shows. I used to watch 2 and 1/2 men, but after reading about Charlie Sheen and his porn addiction, I don't think it's as funny as it used to be. Now no letters and phone calls please.. to each his own, but Charlie... maintain some control...sheesh! HA.

MEB & LYSS.........I love DWTS and I am so upset that Springer is STILL on the show. What he did this week was so far from dancing that it's criminal...LOL! I only say that becuase like one of you said,it's not fair to the others, and especially ones that were better than him and still got kicked off.I really, really liked WILLA,even though I have no clue who she is or had ever heard of her before the show. I thought she had the potential to be like Stacy from last season. I wasn't sorry to see Vivica go,thought she was way too cocky and pretty stiff legged at times. I just want "Dimples" to win,he amazes me with his style and that boy knows how to shake his groove thang!!

Thought LOST was pretty tame tonight. Fianlly, the polar bears are back. No wonder they are on the loose, their cages are in use...LOL. Now how did LOCKE end up in the wheelchair? Does it have something to do with this set up or am I completely "lost" in thinking something happened to him after his "daddy" took his kidney??Help me,Mr. Wizard!!!

Any Project Runway fanatics??? So Jeffrey won tonight, and although I didn't like his personality(I softened that stance after seeing him with his son)I admire how he's pulled his life together and apparently,he has the touch in the fashion world, which is not my taste. I personally thought LAURA's clothes were beautiful. Seems the freakier you are or out there personally,it helps in this game. Just look at JAY and SANTINO,but can't explain CHLOE from last season,I really liked her.

Jericho still scares the bejeebers out of me, especially with all the nuclear testing stuff going on in North Korea.
I can't decide if the main african american character is a good guy or a bad guy.
overall I like the show but can't see how it could run longer than one season. but then, lost has made it all this time lol.
