'Survivor 14: Fiji' - Ep. 3 -or- "The Rich Get Richer..."

I'm not sure how much I'm liking the tribes being so divided by comforts vs. absolutely nothing. As Rocky/James/Boston (whatever) said tonight, "The rich get richer and the poor get poorer." I think it was he who said it. That's spot on.

By being dehydrated and having little food, it's setting a cycle of losing for Ravu. The more they lose, the deeper the hole they dig for themselves. I so want them to win something... anything!

17 are left. Who will be voted out tonight?

The show opened on the Ravu camp on the sixth night. They're in rough shape and know it all too well. They decided that they must pull together as a team, put egos aside, and concentrate on winning. Now, it's easier to vow that than actually win.
Yau-Man Looking Even Skinnier
In the morning shot over at the Moto camp, they have it very rough themselves. Why, they have to paint the wooden floor of their well-built shelter because it may keep the ants out. They eat, they laugh. Boo said the game should be called "thrival, not Survival."

Meanwhile, Earl returned from his trip to Exile Island, evading questions about the hidden Immunity Idol and unable to provide water for his begging tribemates. I wonder if they seriously thought he'd tell them if he found the hidden Idol. Michelle finally got a fire going using eyeglasses because the sun showed up long enough to do it. So, now they can boil water and have something to drink. James/Rocky is as beside himself as his many names might indicate. He thinks they're invincible.

Yeah, right.

This week's Reward and Immunity challenges were split up (as they should be). There was no puzzle in either this week. I might just faint. For Reward, the tribe members were paired with someone from the other tribe. They had to maneuver a slippery wet course which looked like a giant wet tarp, grab a numbered ball, then make a basket at the end of the course. Sounds easy, right?
Boo and Moto Tribe
The winning team had a choice of three different rewards. They could choose the luxury items they brought to the show (we haven't seen those for a few seasons, a duplicate of the fishing gear Moto won last week, or a bowl of fruit. The winner would also select a member of the losing tribe to go to Exile Island. Unlike previous weeks, the exiled isn't immune at Tribal Council and will return before the next challenge.
Gary Goes Down Hard
I don't know which part of the Reward Challenge folks had more problems doing. They were slip-sliding away on the course and the toss into the basket wasn't an easy shot at all. Gary fell down hard, extremely hard, at one point. Ravu started out good, then petered out. Sylvia, who wanted to excel to get in the good graces with her tribe, stumbled on the task. In the end, even though the Smurf (Gary) fell hard, it was yet another Moto win. They chose more fishing gear and sent Sylvia off to Exile Island. While there, Sylvia's next clue indicated the hidden Idol was buried under the threshold of the cave-shelter.

While the Moto tribe was celebrating their victory back in their luxury digs, Gary started having problems breathing. He thought it was due to his fall and said the feeling reminded him of a time when he broke his ribs. The medics were called in and saw nothing life-threatening. They advised rest. His tribemates seemed as worried that he'd hold them back in the Immunity Challenge as they were for his health. Don't get me wrong, they were concerned about his health. The thought that he should quit rather than risk health issues seemed at least partially based on their own will to win.
Icky Food Challenge
The tree mail said the next challenge would be more based on will than brawn. And, so it was time for the icky food competition! Jeff Probst claimed the foods involved were things Fijians actually eat. Each tribe member was matched up with a member of the opposing tribe and had to eat a set amount of each... um... delicacy. Raw giant clams, octopus tentacles, peanut worms, sea cucumbers, fish eyes, and pig snouts (with hair!). Blech. Ravu started well but then were running snout-to-snout with Moto towards the end. Then Anthony totally completely blew it. He was at the pig snouts against wounded Gary. He took one little piece and couldn't swallow it while Gary ate all the snouts on his plate. Moto wins again.

At the Ravu camp, Sylvia was determined to try to find the hidden Idol to save her own butt. Others were speculating on whether she had it or not as that might affect their voting strategy. Half the camp (or more) was mad at Anthony thinking he didn't even try to swallow the "food." I personally can't say much as I know I wouldn't have been able to do it, either.

At Tribal Council, Jeff seemed to rub salt in the hungry wounds of the Ravu tribe. "What does it take to turn this tribe around? What's the state of this tribe?" Of course he got answers like tired, hungry, exhausted, sick, sick of losing, and on and on. Mookie voiced his anger at Anthony's performance in the food challenge. Angry words were tossed back and forth for a bit, then it was time to vote. Sylvia didn't have the Idol when Jeff asked prior to reading the vote. The vote was evenly split between her and Anthony (with a single vote for Earl), then the last vote was read.

Sylvia was voted off.

And, that's that. Something has to change. To me, it's not fair to those on the Ravu tribe. It's liked they're doomed to keep doing worse each week as they grow weaker. At this rate, there will be none to last for a merge.

Hi Jackie,

I was really disappointed in tonight's competitions. They were both attainable for Ravu and yet they let them both slide. I can't fault Anthony for not eating pig snout with hair on it. I couldn't do it. But if Moto could do it, so should they have been able to do it.

Hope things get easier for them. The one sided-ness doesn't seem fair.

For me,this is not cutting it. Are we to sit and watch RAVU lose each week and just get picked off until a merge happens? It's not fun to watch them starve,as I have said again and again.Thank goodness they got that fire started!

Too bad for Sylvia, because there were a lot of underperformers on RAVU in those challenges! Yau and Michelle were awful in the slide part,as was Sylvia. She just layed there waiting for the wind to blow her along,I guess. And the IC,what nasty stuff. I agree MEB,I could never do it,but their butts were on the line. Anthony was horrible,at least Sylvia tried

Poor Sylvia, who designed the great shelter and then was sent immediately to Exile. She never got a chance to bond...too many interruptions and she was a bit older. She was a better player than most of Ravu. I feel sorry for them that they are having a hard time while the other team lives in the lap of luxury...certainly not a typical Surivor camp...nevertheless they don't seem to put out much at the competitions. They all needed to try harder with the food comp. Some of them just didn't try at all...at least Sylvia came close. Can't think of the name of the girl who got the fish eyes, but she was just waiting to lose so she could take out the one in her mouth, which she quickly did. There was no way she was going to eat them all even for immunity. Guess she figured she was safe as Sylvia would be the one going home if they lost, not her, so she decided not to put that stuff in her stomach and not to take one for the team. I think Sylvia got a raw deal. I hope next year they don't send someone to Exile immediately without giving them a chance. It's a sure ticket home.

I am hoping next week there is some kind of twist...one team is surviving and the other coping. Not sure I want to watch Ravu slide further. It seemed like Ravu was paid to lose both competitions, ok, I know probably not...BUT... Every week they zip into the lead but lose in the waning minutes!!! Just seems so strange to me.

I hope the producers will do something -- A food competition (with real food, not insects), a merge, something to help the flailing team as they don't want anyone to die, though they probably care most about good TV ratings.

I do recall in Australia people were totally starving on one team through the entire show and then their camp washed away entirely in a storm... not good TV. Then a few seasons ago, when Bobby John and -- brunette woman's oy, what's her name?? -- lost almost every challenge... they were so fierece it was heartening, but still a downer for the audience. I hope the producers make some twist for RAVU this next week. Anwyay, in a few weeks it will get good as it always does and we will have forgotten the struggle of this part!

Was surprised at Rocky's positive energy and trying to pull the sagging moreale of his team up through sheer force of will. Didn't expect that from him, and it was a little light in that dark camp, for me anyway.

Sylvia looked like she took as hard a spill as Smurf Daddy.

Hey Jackie,
I have looked and I don't see where this is mentioned and it is bugging me...Why does Jeff ask for the Immunity Idol before the votes are read? The way it was, a person would see that they had been voted out and then they could save themself with the Idol. Now, it looks to me like, whoever winds up with the Idol will have to use it anytime they feel threatened. (Which would be all the time)
Confused...

You heard the saying, I am so hungry I could eat a horse. If Ravu was as hungry as they said they were, they could have won the food competition. They should have scarf down that food. I guess they were not as hungry as they said they were.

Couldn't agree more arlene! All the bellyaching about starving and they couldn't do this challenge!

I know this is only the 3rd episode, but is anyone else seeing a major snoozefest with this season?

This is the first Survivor that I do not like. No one stands out. There is not an adventurious player in the whole pack. Why dont they go to the shore and look for protein. Can't they swim in that water? Do they really just sit there and moan and never leave the "set"? I have yet to see anyone with any personality! I used to like the puzzles they had which gave the brawn and brains an equal chance. I still remember the entertaining mazes and the puzzles and Rudy running around say, "I don't know" at the questions at each station. Also, are we stuck here in this part of the world on the same beach or island because of the war? I do not like the idea of Exile Island. Dumb idea and weakens more the tribe who is already weak. Go back and look over some of the first shows and try to recreate it. We loved it. Even Jeff looks bored! Everybody looks and acts the same on this season.

I missed Survivor because of American Idol, but I'm back online and looked to Jackie for a rundown!! HI ALL!!

I think they should have made the good camp part of every reward challenge. Winner gets the good camp and sends a member of the losing team to Exile Island. I think that would make everyone work harder to win!

The members of the luxury camp are boring because they don't do anything but lie around waiting for the next comp. and congratulating themselves that they can beat people who are deprived of all the amenities they have for winning ONE competition. For that they have gotten a permanent resort type residence. They neither toil not spin. It's like watching people lazy people having a beach vacation. This is Survivor? The members of the other camp don't seem to want to work to make a better camp, provide food for themselves. They too just lie around and complain. I agree, no one is standing out. I have been a faithful fan of Survivor from the start, but this year is a dud so far.

If Survivor doesn't make a few changes they may see their ratings slip. Same with Apprentice and the stupid tents and the nepotism of having the Tumpettes on the show. Still say though that the games and comps on Survivor are challenging. But that's the only part of the show that is engaging.

Hey folks, we'll always have The Amazing Race! Go Romber!

sydney - Rocky has been surprising me so far, too. He's still not on my "think he'll win" list, but he's doing better than my initial impression of him.

Debbie - I think they may be doing that way to force the idol into use from fear of the unknown. They've had two seasons before this with the Idol and it wasn't used. I think the show wants it used, so they put two in this season and put it in play before the votes are read.

ORKMommy! Welcome back! Many of us were wondering what happened. I thought it had to be computer woes. I'm glad all is okay and it's great to "see" you again.

Jackie -- Not so much computer woes as "single mom not getting child support" financial woes. Things are back to normal now and mommy has her internet back!

How did Survivor rate against Idol in the same timeslot on Thursday? I don't know where to go for TV ratings. I do know that I watched Idol over Survivor :)

For single mom not getting child support...if you live in NJ contact Child Services and have support paid through the Probation Department. They do send out the sheriff and arrest the payee if the arrearages back up. And your check will come from the state of NJ.

Right now watching Survivor is like watching a football game where the score if 37 zip at the end of the first quarter.

Anon - Thanks for the tip, but I live in WI and the deadbeat is in FL. If he doesn't work, there's no support. I've been through this for a few years, but I appreciate your concern. :)

I say that we give it time... hold on for the 6th and 7th eps when Survivor starts to get good and people do stand out because by less numbers the show is able to focus in on the personalities -- and by those weeks the players start to get the room to come out.

If you exhibit any kind of uniqueness early on in this game, it seems you are a big target to get voted out... perhaps another reason WHY so many may be also not standing out to us. Hello!

Looking back over the blog and comments, every season we have so many complaints that it's boring or a dud early on. Last year that sense for me went well into the middle of the season, but I know it always gets better.

Inevitably all of us start to say how great the eps are and toward the very end, tend to say things like this was maybe the best survivor... Happens every year. Maybe not in the first few seasons when things were all new... maybe different on the All Star Game.... but this seems to have been the pattern. Just encouraging everyone to hang in there.

There may be something interesting that could happen by the one tribe being so "unchallenged" by luxury, with the other having to fight -- yes, they are starving and weakened by defeat, and that's a drag to watch... just like the football comment. But as the alst ep ended they went back and talked in a way I haven't seen much of in all the seasons -- they were really addressing coming together and getting over their internal lack of connection and focus. I'm looking forward to seeing if that gets them somewhere, more like last season's Underdogs.

And in contrast... I wonder what critical dynamics may NOT be forming between the luxury laden tribe due to the aspect of the "Thrival" -- and how that may come out to unexpectedly bite them in the ass -- particularly during the merge.
