'The Amazing Race 11: All Stars' - Ep. 6 -or- "Home of the Tanzanian Devil"

Tonight's show was a very odd episode. I didn't care too much for the outcome, as you'll see.

But that's not why I found it odd.

For the most part, it really didn't move forward so much. Instead of, like the last episode, having some sort of show-planned back-up tickets for a flight, the flight the teams had to board had some waiting for more than a day, maybe two. While I don't like bunching points, I think that put some teams so far behind the pack leaders that an extended bunching point will be needed to get the teams on a bit more even basis. I found the Detour and Roadblocks rather run of the mill, too.

Seven teams remain. Who will be eliminated next?

Charla and Mirna, the first team to arrive at the last Pit Stop in Maputo, were the first to leave. I actually missed the time gap between them and the last team, Uchenna and Joyce, this week. I believe it could have been more than a few hours.

The teams received $124 for this leg and had to get their drivers to drive them to the airport where they needed a flight to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The mention of Tanzania prompted a reference to the "Tanzanian devil" by Eric. It's no wonder he's a beach bum model, eh? To give Danielle credit (which Eric never seems to do), she knew it was a Tasmanian devil.

Okay, a half-hour into the show, we still had dreaded airport scenes. First, the airport wouldn't sell tickets until morning, so all the teams made it there. But, in no way could it be considered a bunching point. And, what's worse is that we had to endure fake accents from Mirna and Schmirna, nasty glares between Eric and the Guidos, and lots of confusion.
Yes, Danielle Was a Nightmare
And, want to know what's the absolute worst? Mirna and Charla were the only ones on the first flight! Argh. It gave them a huge lead on the other teams. Uchanna/Joyce, the ChaChas, Dustin/Kandice, and Eric/Danielle got on standby for the next flight.

But, after boarding, Eric and Danielle had to leave the plane as they didn't wait for the tickets with the others and were in someone else's seats -- or something to that effect. Danielle was crushed. She said it was a nightmare and she rather looked like a nightmare, too.

That left Eric/Danielle, Terri and Ian, and the Guidos stuck at the airport. Ian had been insistent about waiting on line and ended up missing the boat. Er, the plane. Then, Eric/Danielle boarded a flight and it was just Terri/Ian and Team Guido (Joe and Bill) left behind. By the time they got on a flight, the winning team probably already jumped on the mat at the Pit Stop.

Once in Dar es Salaam, teams had to take a ticket to board a dhow which would sail them to where they'd find the next clue. As the first dhow was canceled due to a storm, Charla and Mirna were left to wait until morning. By then, Oswald and Danny showed. They were so lucky! They got to travel with seasick Charla! Oswald tried to administer a bit of first aid to make her feel better. Mirna said "you always have such great beauty tips." Say what?
Puzzle at the Detour
The next clue led to a Detour, a choice between two tasks that both members of the team must complete. They could Solve It or Schlep It. In Solve It, teams had to complete a rather difficult 62-piece puzzle which consisted of painted wooden fish which each fit in a particular place. In Schlep It, teams had to go to a lumber yard, put two fifty-pound logs in a cart, then wheel it a bit over a mile to deliver it. All of the teams except for Dustin and Kandice chose the puzzle. The wood actually seemed easier. Some of the teams had real problems with the puzzle, others finished it on quick order.
Target at the Roadblock
Next was a Roadblock, similar to ones we've seen in the past. In "Who's on Target?," Maasai warriors were gathered to teach and watch as one member of each team threw a wooden club used in that area at a target. When they hit the target, it broke and revealed the next clue. I remember the Maasai from either this show or Survivor. They're the tribe which drains blood from cows to drink. Not enough to kill the cow; they revere the cows. Who says reality television isn't educational?

The clue they received there directed them to the Pit Stop where the next team may be eliminated. Oswald and Danny were there at the same time as Charla and Mirna, but easily finished first. When Charla and Mirna finished, they put on such a loud and odd celebration that the Maasai actually cringed away from them a bit.
Maasai Warrior Hides From Mirna
I had dreaded flashbacks to the time they went shopping in their season as they stopped to purchase fruit. ChaChas, don't blow it! Sure enough, Mirna and Charla passed them and hit the Pit Stop at the Old Fort in Stonetown first. Other teams were still struggling to make it and we saw day turn to night and to dawn again before the last team checked in.

Here's the order at the Pit Stop:
  1. Charla and Mirna - Each won a catamaran. Neither knew what one is.
  2. Oswald and Danny
  3. Uchenna and Joyce - Since they were marked for elimination in the last leg, they had to wait a half-hour before they could claim the spot. No other teams arrived during the time, so they kept third place.
  4. Dustin and Kandice
  5. Eric and Danielle
  6. Joe and Bill
  7. Terri and Ian - Philiminated
Obviously, I don't care for the winning team. But this entire leg was sort of so-so. With the huge flight snafu it set the whole leg awry. I didn't really enjoy it too much. I believe the footrace bit with Ian/Terri and Team Guido was heavily edited. I think there probably was quite a bit of time between them. I guess we'll see what they say in interviews.

Next week's show is two hours. They better make up for my dissatisfaction with this week's episode.

Jackie, you've sort of got your time line wrong. Eric & Danielle had to leave the flight with Uchenna & Joyce, Dustin & Kandice and Danny & Oswald because they had mistakenly been given someone else's tickets - in other words there were really only six standby seats not eight. The next South African Airlines flight had "two" (really four since teams have to bring along their two person camera crew) standby seats. These went to Eric & Danielle. Terri & Ian, together with The Guidos were then force to take an Air Malawi flight.

So there were four flights: 1. SAA with Charla & Mirna; 2. SAA with Uchenna & Joyce, Dustin & Kandice & Danny & Oswald; 3. SAA with Eric & Danielle; 4. Air Malawi with Terri & Ian and Joe & Bill.

Did anyone catch upon leaving the pitstop all were told to "take" the car they arrived in? I laughed at that as the BQ's like to switch cars....wonder what they did to theirs?

We finally get to see the delays involved. I for one liked AR showing us that sometimes it is not as smooth as it may seem with editing. Usually AR goes like clockwork...but any traveler knows that is far from the truth.

Amazing how "likable" C/M were for once...guess if they have the lead the b*t*hing and yelling stop. @@ From preview they look back to form next week!!

Next week must be a continue (per say)....pitstop turns into a keep on going!

Fixed, thanks Brent. It was very confusing (and annoying).

There has got to be at least 12 hours between first and last. I wonder how they are going to even that out? Do you suppose they have a couple senarios set up in advance, with ones that allow more of the bunching up for a case like this? The next legs destinations & challenges depend on how the last leg finished up?

I kept thinking if the last teams to the mat don't arrive for days what would TAR do? Would they keep the departure times so far apart? Or do they have some sort of rule in place for that sort of thing happening... like a max time limit between first and last place? I mean it would suck to be that far behind because all the flights were booked and end up losing on the next leg. Not that I liked either of the lagging teams, I'm just saying...

Anonymous said...

I had no love for the lagging teams either, but come on folks, fair is fair.To not be able to even have the possibility to book a flight becasue the one and only flight each day is already overbooked!! This made for a very boring race,as far as I was concerned. And,personally,I LIKE the bunching points, cause it does kind of set them all on equal footing once again.

And I don't know,Delee,I didn't think that M/C were without any bitchy comments this time. CHARLA in the confessional, why she's just an itty bitty green meanie!!And having to endure their browbeating that ticket agent...yikes! And she made an nasty comment to Terri when she was at her wit's end. I'm sorry, they are just NOT nice people!

I am sooo hoping that DANNY/OSWALD can forego their shopping addiction and pull in front of those two.And is it just me or are the GUIDOS looking older and more tired than in their season? At this point I want almost anybody else to win than C/M. Maybe if they keep winning, the producers will send them to Acapulco, like they did ROMBER!! I still think that was very, very fishy...not unlike the plane caper in their season!!!

I personally just found this episode another one full of controversy for Uchenna/Joyce. How did Eric/Danielle get kicked off the plane in front of Uchenna/Joyce. I know if it was me, I'd be like "um, no, I was at the airport before you, I'm taking the seat, YOU get off the plane". And all the plane delays pretty much guarenteed that Uchenna/Joyce could've crawled through the tasks and still had plenty of time to spare while being "marked for elimination". Is TAR setting us up for another win by Uchenna/Joyce? Weren't they the only winners on All Stars in the first place?

And that fake accent by Charla/Mirna makes me hit the mute button on my TV, I can't stand it!!!

Snooze city. It's better to read the blog than to actually watch the show!! Thanks again Jackie!

It didnt seem like they investigated all their flight options this week. When they didnt make the SAA flight with eric and danielle and asked if anyone else was going to tazania found out about Air Malawi....I had to wonder if they had had a flight the day before when everyone else left....or if going back to where they started and taking the next direct flight would have been quicker....just seemed like they thought SAA was THE only option to get to this destination....

Anonymous said...

mrstito - I assumed Eric & Dani got pulled because they were last on the list. I don't recall what order they arrived to the airport, and that doesn't even matter as they could have signed up for standby in a different order anyway.

Anonymous said...

On CBS morning news and interview with Terry and Ian they said the time was 3-4 minutes behind the Guidos.....

Anonymous said...

Also heard that the time after the pitstop can be 12 to 48 hours and we are led to believe 12 hours or less.....so there is a built in pad. With computers AR knows what flights are empty or near full. They have to know what is what!

C/M left the pitstop at 9:07pm. U/J left at 10:36pm, a difference of 1hour and 29 minutes. I, too, am beginning to wonder if it's starting to look like a set-uo for U/J to win again. Also, why were they allowed to keep their money and personal belongings when every other show, the non-eliminated had to give them up? I hope that's a rule change that will apply to others, too. And Danielle was the one who asked if they could be put on standby on the flight to Jo'burg, so why were they given tickets last? Being last on the list meant they were the ones that had to be taken off the overbooked flight. Something fishy here.

Sharon..I did not say I liked them...far from it.... no major fav with me. Guidos do look old and tired.

Good grief, people. There's no U/J conspiracy. Last year, when David & Mary were marked for elimination they didn't give up their money. So it's not just a change to favor U/J. Get over it already.

Anonymous said...

Yes, David and Mary did give up their money last year. Remember some of the other teams left some foe them and the ones that didn;t were chastised for it.

Producers instituted this change (finish first or incur a 30 minute penalty) after deciding that the image of Americans begging for money in foreign countries just didn't add to our image.

Jackie, I love all your blogs. I sometimes like your blog than the actual episode that week. I know you dont watch DWTS, but just a thought could you perhaps watch the last few minutes just to see who gets eliminated. I am on the west coast and love to know ahead of time who got the boot. I know you are a very busy person so it is just a thought. The elimination show is on tomorrow nite. Thank you for the great job you do.

I don't know about anyone else, but the first comment is hard to read because is "behind" the last line of the title for the episode and "show original post." Maybe just my computer but maybe not. Love your interpretations and find I always agree with you. It does seem there is a slight bias toward J and U. And is it just me or is Joyce looking really buxom this season...hmmmm, maybe augmentation with their winnings? Have to say I enjoyed Uchenna jumping with the Massai...and I love that the beauty queens are always so upbeat and rarely complain. They really seem to be enjoying themselves...even when things go wrong like dumping over the logs..they just figure out another way to do the challenge and don't bitch and moan. I hope they can move up in the pack. Hate Mirna and Shmirna.

Jackie has set up a site for DWTS on the right hand side....look for info there

This is only my second season watching TAR, and I sit here reading the U/J comments through the last few eps... I come from no previous knowledge other than that they are the only All Stars that won.

There have seemed to be a few things that don't make sense in general on this show not just about U/J, BUT I ask myself, what reason could the producers of this show possibly have to favor this couple? I can't come up with a thing...

They are not adding any major drama to the show or keeping it afloat. I'm pretty sure there is no conspiracy, but there are some strong comments out there to the contrary. I'd be really interested in hearing any of those folks' answers on this question.

Thanks.

And to whomever asked: YES for the past few weeks I have been having the first line of the first commenter come up typed under the heading "xx comments - Show original post".

The word verification has also been funky for about 6 weeks... almost always comes up blank the first time and then I have to do it twice more, even though my word is spelled correctly. Not sure Jackie can alter any of this though. Assume this happens to others as well.

Same here Sydney....type the WV once and poof nada do again and then have 2 comments.... I like J/U...have no ill will towards them.

Folks - I'm not sure what's going on with the CAPTCHA (word verification). I know I've had to delete some spam as it's only working sometimes. It's beyond my control.

As for Uchenna and Joyce, folks tend to color their thoughts with personal opinions. Often those who felt Rob and Amber should have won their season, will see something awry with anything positive that may happen to U/J.

I try not to get involved in the controversy, but I will say this:

Season 7 is long over.
I know from knowing a production staffer that they set up the non-elimination legs while planning the route on the whole -- long before the teams race it. The challenges, Yields, non-elim legs... are all planned before the race is run. The shows aren't "rigged." They have too many controls, laws, and more they must adhere to.
The past two seasons have had the 30-minute penalty for the non-elim "losing team." If memory serves, David and Mary lost their bags -- that's why people were giving them money last season.
Eric and Danielle were kicked off the plane because they ran ahead of the others and didn't check their actual tickets or boarding passes -- they had someone else's tickets, not ones in their names.

Jackie, your memory wasn't so great on the events of last night's show. There's at least 3 corrections listed above. Wonder if this will get on your blog or if it will stay there very long if it does get on.

Hi Jackie,
Love your posts for Amazing and can't wait till you start with Big Brother. As everyone says...you can miss the show and still enjoy your recaps. It's a lifesaver even in the days of TIVO. And it's fun to read the comments/discussions, etc. Fie and eye roll @@ to anonymous who chided you for your memory...I think most of your readers think your notetaking and recall is truly awesome. I'm loving this season as always even though I wanted Romber to stay in the race. C'est la vie.
