'The Amazing Race 11: All Stars' - Ep. 9 -or- "Those dirty, dirty hookers..."

Although some interesting events happened during this leg of the race, I found my attention wandering a bit. Perhaps it's because there were no thrilling challenges. Perhaps it's because I so want Mirna gone.

Oh, yeah, Charla can stay, but Mirna has to go. I'll admit that it looked like Mirna either behaved better or was edited to seem like she wasn't as rude this week.

Five teams remain. Who will be eliminated next?

The teams were still in Krakow, Poland, where we last left them. That's probably a good thing. After all, we don't want them sneaking off to Tahiti when we're not looking, right? Because of the Fast Forward intermingled with the Intersection, Oswald/Danny and Joyce/Uchenna shared the first place early start time of 9:48 PM. The last team, Danielle and Eric, left at 3:22 AM. So we no longer have the sixteen-hour gap between first and last.

The lead time didn't make a huge difference as the teams had to arrange for a flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There were no flights until morning, so the teams tried different approaches to obtaining tickets from online to at the airport. Mirna and Charla hogged the two computers at the hotel thus irking Danielle and Eric. Oh, well.

Uchenna and Joyce took a huge chance on the flight which would arrive the earliest if (and it's a big if) they could make a tight connection in Frankfurt, Germany. Charla and Mirna managed to get tickets on a flight before that one while the other three teams ended up on a flight which stopped in Paris.

Well, Uchenna and Joyce's flight was indeed delayed and they missed their connection in Frankfort. Then we didn't see them again until near the end of the show. So, it became a race of four teams for the most part of the show, two teams I especially don't care much for -- Charla/Mirna and Eric/Danielle. I don't like the former mainly due to Mirna and the fake accents both go into when talking to folks from other countries. As for Eric and Danielle, I think he's a jerk and treats her very poorly. He's a misogynist, too. Blech.

At least I have Oswald and Danny and the Beauty Queens (Dustin and Kandice) whom I'm finding more tolerable this season. Thankfully, they haven't crashed a car and saddled another team with it.
Lord Murugan Statue at the Batu Caves
Once in Malaysia, the teams had to take a combination of buses and trains to get to the Batu Caves. The hitch was that they had to figure the best and quickest combination of the specified transport to get there. Yawn. However, once there, the Batu Caves were really an interesting place. I only wish they had gone up inside of them instead of just up the stairs to one.

The clue at the caves had teams taking a taxi to the Kampung Baru Jamek Mosque where they faced a Detour. They could choose between Artistic Expression or Cookie Confessional. In Artistic Expression, teams would have to use hand-iron sized stamps to stamp designs on a long banner of cloth, then dye it to match specifications. In Cookie Confessional, somewhere within 600 boxes of cookies, there was a cookie with a black licorice filled center. The key was finding it.

The clue for the Detour also contained a Yield, one of two this season. While Charla and Mirna chose not to use it, the second team through -- Dustin and Kandice -- did. They tossed around the idea of Yielding Danny and Oswald, but decided to Yield Eric and Danielle. Uh-oh... how to make friends and influence people, eh?
Mirna and Charla Eat Cookies
Charla and Mirna were leading the race when they decided to do the cookies. Not a good choice, I must say. It cost them time as Dustin and Kandice chose to do the Artistic Expression, not an easy task but those needle-in-a-haystack challenges have sunk many a team during the history of the show. (Who was it with the actual hay in rolls some seasons ago way past dark?)

Oswald and Danny chose to eat the cookies, then chose not to eat the cookies, then ate more cookies, then went off to be Artistic. And they had a spat, too. But their tempers were tame compared to when Eric and Danielle saw they had been Yielded!
Dustin and Kandice Yield Eric and Danielle
"Those dirty, dirty hookers!," said Eric pre-commercial and repeated post-commercial for effect.

The Artistic Expression challenge was tricky. Charla couldn't reach high enough to do the stamping. Oswald and Danny didn't get the number of stamped prints right and they had to do it all over again.

Meanwhile, Eric and Danielle waited out their 30-minute Yield time like sand through the hourglass. They fussed, they vowed revenge on the Evil Beauty Queens. Actually, I think that it may have been a wiser choice to Yield Oswald and Danny although I'm glad they went for Eric and Danielle instead.
Eric and Danielle Yielded
Once freed from the hourglass, Eric and Danielle chose the cookie task. Of course, with all the boxes that Charla/Mirna and the ChaChas had gone through, there weren't 600 boxes left. But it was still a formidable task. Danielle actually found the cookie! Now, that was sheer luck and it kept them in the game.

Oh, but it was pretty obvious that all four teams were still in the game because the fifth team had gone missing long ago and would remain missing through the next clue -- the Roadblock.

This Roadblock was as un-thrilling as a Roadblock could ever get. What happened to skydiving? Bungee-jumping? Wrasslin' alligators? One member of each team had to ride a bicycle with an attached platform to collect a stack of newspapers from the nearby neighborhood. The stack had to be eight hands high. (Stifle those yawns.) About the only interesting bits during this challenge were that Mirna actually had to do a challenge and Danielle pointed out that Eric's a woman. She did, too! She said it because she always ends up with the physical tasks.

The arrival order at the Pit Stop was:
  1. Dustin and Kandice - Each won a retro-scooter (moped).
  2. Charla and Mirna
  3. Eric and Danielle, despite the Yield.
  4. Oswald and Danny.
Hey, weren't there five teams at the start of the show? Why, yes, there were five teams. Uchenna and Joyce arrived late into the night. They followed the clue to the Batu Caves. But then, instead of the clue the others followed, their clue directed them right to the Pit Stop. Once there, they got the bad news from Phil.

Their elimination will make a lot of Rob/Amber fans happy. But there are folks like me out here, too. While I didn't care much for Rob or Amber on Survivor, I enjoyed them as a team on The Amazing Race. And, I liked Uchenna and Joyce, as well.

Mirna and Schmirna must go away!

I thiught Eric and Danielle were milder than usual. And Mirna was definitely playing to the cameras tonight. I'm sure they will all be back to their nasty selves next week. I'm also hoping for Oswald/Danny and if not them, then the Beauty Queens. I love this show!

There is a certain irony here...once again Uchenna and Joyce has a gate problem with the plane door closed...but this time the "fates" didn't intervene and they were left behind. Karma I guess. I did like them as a team, but they had already won and I'm for the Beauty Queens who remain positive and upbeat...second for me is the Cha Chas who show a human side in their spats but are never nasty to one another. Onward and upward...MayOswald and Danny and Dustine and Candace rule. Hate even the new improved Mirna and Charla...god deliver me from their fake accents...what are they speaking? Where are they pretending to be from? Do they think all the people in other countries are morons. In Kuala Lampur it seems everyone spoke English. Something Mirna and Charla could learn.

Actually Eric and Danielle did have to search through 600 boxes of cookies. Each team who was trying it had their own table of cookies and each table had 600 cookies.

As for Mirna, maybe she wasn't being shown as being nasty tonight, but she was showing her hypocritical side. She was constantly being shown saying that they didn't pull underhanded tricks even as they were pulling underhanded tricks (like Bogarting the computers at the hotel). As for the Yield, they were so self-righteous about not using it, but the fact is that the Yield is a part of the Race and you're an idiot for not using it, particularly when you don't know where one team is.

Sad to see U/J go. They took a risk to gain what an hour? Bad choice. I would like to see Mirna just once say..." Please or thank you to someone as she shouts her orders ". If I was a cab driver, I would go as slow as the law allows if she treated me with imperative orders!!! Also when M said they did not resort to underhanded things, I almost choked. At airline counters comes to mind (with Ian and Terry), eavedropping while in line and butting in ( can I ask a quick ?). OH please.

There a was table of cookies for each team. Loved when the ChaCha's argued about a whole box would be licorice or just one cookie. Again it comes down to reading the clue correctly! A cookie is not a whole box of licorice cookies.

Didn't the clue at the Detour say that the teams were to walk to the challenges? Why weren't C/M penalized for taking a taxi, when all the other teams walked? I thought for sure that Phil was going to say something to them about not following the clue. Thought that would help put an end to them! Oh, well! Gen

So this time the plane Gods didn't look so kindly on U/J and they are out. I always admired U/J for the kind of race they run,but I still didn't want to see them win again,BUT if it was down to them and C/M then I would have been rooting them on for dear life. I am a charter member of the "ANYBODY BUT Charla/Mirna" club.I cannot believe the fantasy that comes out of her mouth. She must have selective memory! And I agree with whoever said that Charla uses her size to her advantage,AND that she knew the challenges when she signed up and shouldn't complain. I actually think there are no real exciting and difficult challenges this time because of their concern for her,and this is ALL-STARS,in my opinion,it should be harder and more challenging than a normal AR.

Does Eric realize when he shoots his mouth off, that millions of people are hearing what he says and I can't believe the producers made a point of airing his nasty names and words over and over again. And is it just me,but couldn't Danielle dress a little more appropriately. Her boobs are hanging out of almost everything she wears. The others can cover up,why not her. Just another example of the "ugly" of some Americans abroad, and the program should foster the idea of being ambassadors, not flaunt their boobs all over the place....JMO!

Saw U/J on The Early Show and they were asked their opinion of C/M...and they didn't pull any punches!!They sadi they were devious and that Mirna was like "fingernails on a blackboard".
They were very gracious and said they were just happy to get another trip around the world and the money was second to them. Nice people!

I dislike Mirna, but you do have to give that team credit. Twice now, they've found earlier flights than other teams. Those flights gave them big leads and kept them in the race.

I'm cheering for Oswald and Danny or Dustin and Kandice.

Maybe it was the editing, but Uchenna always seemed to have something positive to say about the places they visited on TAR. He truly appreciated the culture of the various countries. Other contestants have made comments about "can't wait to get out of this country" on more than one occasion. U/J ran a good race and seem like nice people. Hope things go well for them.

We all seem pretty much in agreement here that Uchenna and Joyce were a good team and nice people. But cutting a connection so close through a major European airport hub like Frankfurt is way too risky just to save an hour. Maybe they expected "help" again if they were running late. If so, they didn't get it this time and it cost them the race. Mirna and Shmirna seems to be on everyone's "anyone but" list including mine. Actually, they are so awful it's sometimes fun to sit in amazement at their actions, smug self satisfaction and self righteousness, and the words that come out of their mouths... Hogging the computers not so nice, but they did get a jump on everyone else by doing their own research instead of relying on phone or office staff. I personally agree about Danielle with her huge boobs flopping around and "in your face." This is so disrespectful in a country like Malaysia...it just makes Americans seem insensitive to local culture. And we have an internaitonal P.R. problem now so it would be a good time to show some respect. The producers should direct her to reign those pupppies in.

DID ANYONE NOTICED THAT OSWALD/DANNY CHEATED ON THE ROADBLOCK???

You were supposed to buy USED paper from people, not NEW paper from a store.

Oswald and Danny cheated.

When they got to the pit stop, we didn't see any penalty (it didn't matter because Uchenna/Joyce were a day behind), but I still wanted to see them penalized for not following clue instructions.

As much as you hate Mirna/Charla, you need to give them credit: ONCE AGAIN THEY FOUND THE BEST FLIGHT THAT NOBODY ELSE COULD.

Anonymous said...

OMG, you must be very desparate fans of Smirna. If that had been cheating, they would have been penalized for it. THAT'S WHY nobody else noticed, it didn't happen!!!! Apparently, once they bpught them, they were used.

Please try not to post spoilers in the comments -- a lot of the readers don't want to know! Thank you.

As for the "cheating" - Yes, he bought papers (they were the used ones from inside of cabinets going back for credit from what I could see). They weren't supposed to "buy" any newspapers -- it was being given away for recycling. Both Mirna/Charla and Danny/Oswald broke the "walk" to the clue from the Detour, too. Both teams took taxis. So....?

Teams often suffer penalties we don't see unless it affects the arrival order at the Pit Stop.

Nothing to get yourself all worked up about, Anonymous. Why don't you research and find out what may happen that we don't see? It's very likely that both Mirna/Charla and Oswald/Danny received some sort of time penalty in this leg.

Next time, try leaving a name to your rant, thank you. You can like Mirna and Charla if you want... but get a grip. It's a television show. And, mind you, I never said I hated them. I don't like watching them, Mirna in particular, on the show. There is a huge difference.

I think Mirna is cute...so that is the only girl team I would root for.

I also think Daniels zip up top looked nice.

Miko

I also think we might be told at start of next leg that

Anonymous said...

sorry

get told at start of next leg that teams arrived at 4pm but were accessed a 30 min time penalty..so can't leave till 430am. Hasn't that happend before?

Anonymous said...

Sorry about the spoiler. Assumed too much. Won't do it again. I enjoy your blog immensely!

"nd, mind you, I never said I hated them. I don't like watching them, Mirna in particular, on the show. There is a huge difference."

You imply that you hate them, since you never give them credit for anything, like this being the second time they found a MUCH better flight than any other team.

You only post the bad stuff about mirna/charla, nothing good.

Jackie S. said...

Anon @ 3:57: And you think that implies I "hate" them? Why would I "hate" someone I don't even know? Hey, I'm allowed to have personal preferences when it comes to teams on the show, just as you and anyone else. If it bothers you that much that I'd like to see that team off the show, perhaps it would be better for you to read elsewhere or start your own personal blog shrine to them.

However, since I don't think I even hate anyone I know, you're reading a bit too much into things and overreacting. If Hitler was alive, I'd probably hate him.

Jackie S. said...

Anon @ 10 AM - Not a problem. I've read the same spoilers. ;-)

Jackie -- I just love how people think your blog is some kind of public service that you provide. This blog is YOURS for you to post whatever you'd like. Your opinions, your thoughts, your favorite TV show recaps...whatever YOU want.

I agree that if anyone dislikes what you write on YOUR blog, they can go elsewhere or start their own. I'm sure I speak for all of your loyal fans when I say that I appreciate what you do and the fact that you're giving us this forum to talk about our guilty pleasures!

Oh yea...while I completely dislike Mirna, I can't say that I 'hate' her either. I've never been able to understand people who 'hate' someone they've never met. I do appreciate that you find her annoying and want her gone as much as I do ;)

I wish Mirna had a twin.

Jackie:

My point is, you STILL refuse to give Mirna/Charla credit

After all, as I said,

"you never give them credit for anything, like this being the second time they found a MUCH better flight than any other team."

Why not give them their due props? Two times during this race we've seen find a much better flight that really the other teams had NO excuse not finding (especially Oswald/Danny and Uchenna/Joyce, who both went to back to the hotel to get plane tickets, but none of them tried doing their own internet research, which would have obviously been better than the concierge).

Just give Mirna/Charla their due credit for twice now finding ridiculous better flights than everyone else, that's all I ask.

Jackie S. said...

Anon @ 2:55 - I mentioned in both articles both times they got the earlier flights. I'm not going to jump up and down with joy about it. They're my least favorite team and it ain't gonna happen. And, it's not you who decides what I must do. ;-)

the way Mirna "speaks" to people in other countries with that weird accent of hers is despicable...she spoils the show for me!
