'American Idol 6' - The Final Eight Go Latino... Kind Of, Sort Of

Jackie's TV Blog, American Idol
Oh, my gosh. Put a bunch of young non-Latinos singing to a Latin beat and Sanjaya comes up smelling like a rose out of Spanish Harlem?

Yikes.

Coached by Jennifer Lopez, the contestants had the chance to turn the beat around this week. And, for the most part, they reminded me of Billy Crystal doing the "white man's overbite" in When Harry Met Sally.

Melinda Doolittle was first up on the stage. In my opinion, her voice itself is impeccable, even incredible. She sang "Sway" by Pablo Beltran Ruiz. On key, professional, but it just didn't grasp me the way I know she can. The judges seemed to feel the same was as I did to some extent. Technically, it was very well done. Randy said it was a solid performance. Paula called it "smooth, subtle, and sexy." Simon didn't care for it much. He said it was lounge, cabaret, lazy, and wooden.

LaKisha Jones sang Gloria Estefan's "Conga." Again, she did fine. She hit the notes, she even danced to the beat. But, it wasn't a LaKisha bring-down-the-house kind of performance. Randy thought it was hot and she had a good time. Paula thought it was a safe performance. Simon agreed with Paula. I agree with the both of them.

Chris Richardson sang a song I actually own and enjoy -- "Smooth" by Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas. I wasn't impressed at all. I think he was a bit less nasal-sounding this week and it was a good performance for him. But if I heard his version of the song first, I never would have bought it. But the judges disagreed with me. Randy thought he did a good job, very cool. Paula thought it was a hot performance and sexy. Simon preferred it to the first two as it wasn't
"cabaret."
Haley Scarnato
Then it was Haley Scarnato's turn. Yipes. Can her skirt get any shorter? And what's with that little sexy kick she keeps doing? She sang "Turn the Beat Around" by Gloria Estefan. I think she flirted more than sang it, but that may just be me. She's bugging me more each week. If her sex appeal to the guys doesn't rock the vote this week, she's a goner tomorrow night. Randy said the performance was karaoke. Paula said it was a fun song. (Say what?) Simon said her tactic is to wear the least amount of clothes. (Spot on!) Haley gave Simon the evil eye, but I agree with him.

Next up was Phil Stacey, wearing a hat this week. He doesn't creep me out as much when he wears a hat, but I wasn't in love with the performance, either. He sang "Maria, Maria" by Carlos Santana and The Product G&B. I think he, for the most part, sang it okay -- his voice cracked a bit twice. But I also think it's a boring song for a show like this. I personally would rate his performance better than Chris Richardson as he shows he can have a real voice where as Chris seems to be a nasal "package" of a pop singer. Randy said it lacked passion and he didn't quite connect with the song. Paula said it was a good vocal. Simon said it was a good song choice, but lifeless and his voice cracked. I say we'll see Phil in the bottom rankings again this week and he may go home.
Jordin Sparks
Jordin "Can't Go Wrong" Sparks sang Gloria Estefan's "Rhythm is Gonna Get You." Are we sure she's only seventeen? Really? She has such a professional stage presence that belies her years. She also looked very pretty tonight -- I think I prefer the straighter hair look for her. Oh? Did she sing well? Why, yes she did! Although I'd be more likely to actually buy something like a Melinda Doolittle CD of old classics, I'm leaning more towards Jordin winning this each week. Randy said she had the "yo factor." Paula said she was adorable and had a great time. Simon wasn't stunned. He mentioned the lack of progression tonight (and I think he may have meant overall, not just Jordin).
Blake Lewis
Blake Lewis sang "I Need to Know" by Marc Anthony. That's a song I sort of enjoy, but Blake didn't rock my world with it this week. He did okay and I certainly think he's still the best of the remaining guys. If any of the guys make it in the final four, it should be him. But it wasn't my favorite performance of his this week. Randy said it was a good song choice and hot. Paula said it was an excellent choice. Simon called it the best song choice and best performance of the evening. Okay, they liked it more than I did. He's safe, anyway.
Sanjaya Malakar
Then there was Sanjaya Malakar, the kid who couldn't get words in English straight actually sang in Spanish. Now, my Spanish isn't good enough to know if he screwed up lyrics. But if he did, he recovered without skipping a beat. He sang "Besame Mucho" by Consuelo Velazquez. I think it was his personal best so far this season and may have been one of the more believable and better performances of the night. Shoot me now. Randy called him the smartest contestant and said it was really good. Paula said it was nice. Simon said it wasn't horrible.

Tomorrow night's results show has been expanded to an hour. As usual, I'll be posting East Coast Spoilers on this blog as the show airs here in the NYC area.

Was it just me not moved tonight? Can I get a witness?

I wasn't impressed with any of them, other than Blake and - oh, I hate to admit this... Sanjaya. Of course, I also didn't understand the song (don't speak spanish), but it sounded pretty and lyrical. The teenyboppers are bound to keep him for another round. UGH!! I'm a Lakisha nut and tonight was sort of disapointing. M

Haley has short shorts on not a skirt

To borrow a quote from Simon "I thought tonight's show was ghastly!"
I have been a Melinda Doolittle fan from Day one, but I feel like she is an amazing talent trapped by an old soul.
I think Jordin has the best shot of taking it all.

Give me a J,give me an O R D I N!! I just adore this girl! She is a PERFORMER and has a great voice as well. Was it her best, maybe not,but she looks as if she is having the time of her life every single week.Unlike Jackie,I actually liked BLAKE's song tonight,as well. But then,I usually love those two.

For me,PHIL just did not even come close to the mark for me tonight and didn't like HALEY or CHRIS much either. And I'm sorry,S just still sounds like a little girl singing and those goony faces he makes for all the little girls out there in the cameras,,,,gag me with a spoon. About as sexy as a sweat sock!

Jackie, I am here as your witness! Tonight was less than great all the way around. How disappointing! My thought as the show wrapped was "I should have just read Jackie's review, and not wasted my time." Sad, but true.

I did enjoy Blake, but that was about it. I can't say another word about S, and I am sooo over Hailey's attempt to "bring sexy back" in order to stick around. Didn't hate Phil, Lindy Doo, Jordin, and Kiki, but didn't love any of them, either.

I hope the final four are Lindy Doo, Jordin, Kiki and Blake. And I believe any one of them could take the whole thing if they really step it up. At least we seem to actually have a contest, vs. the two-person showdown that seemed to be our future at the top 10 or 12.

Thanks for the terrific recap, as always!

Jackie, great job tonight, as usual. I have to say that your writing is more entertaining than the shows... I don't watch AI much but tonight I read your full essay on it and it had me laughing and smirking or nodding my head in agreement all the way. It's been said many a time before but what the heck... You Rock.

Your final four would be my final four. Kiki, aka Lakisha is still my favorite but I would not be disappointed with Melinda, Jordan, or Blake, well... maybe Blake. The girls are so much better this year than that. It will be an interesting finish. M

Jackie...I love your recaps! "Can I get a witness?" Now there's a line. I agree with you more than the judges.

Is it just me or are the were the finalists this year a lot weaker than previous years? I agree with Simon...I'm seeing no progression except in wardrobe. Their vocals are pretty much exactly where they started..so the show is a bit boring. I look forward to Melinda and Kiki and Jordan but tonight even they disappointed...just okay but not out of the park. I love Melinda, but she needs some serious wardrobe help that plays to the strengths of her figure and masks it's shortcomings...like the fact tht she is very shortwaisted. Yet they keep putting her in those Empire style outfits that do her no favors. She needs "V" shaped necklines that plunge a bit and a tunic and short skirt or leather pants and a tunic. Visually she needs to elongate the top half of her body.

Melinda has the best voice by far and the least flattering clothes. But her hair is looking good. Thought J Lo gave some good help. There's a girl who knows how to move her bod to a Latin beat.

Latin songs are usually "muy caliente"....Sad to say I think only Jordin, Blake, dare I say it, Sanjaya fit that bill. To a point.

Haley did have shorts on...if you want to call them that (1/8th yard of material)...she must be watching the "Old Navy" commercials. LOL the "short" short one!! Simon was spot on about her attire. Just go do some pornos, Haley, we want to hear you sing not see your body.

I thought after JLo told Phil to think of someone when he sang to give it that certain quality, that he would bring it. Was ok, but with a wife and new baby, there should have been more emotion. Hat made him easier to look at.

Hate to say it but Sanjaya was one of the better ones last night. Anyone notice how his eyes followed the camera as he ended his song. BARF!!! How does a 17 yr old give that look?

Blake was the best of the eve...but all in all, the style of music they did last night should have made us want to get up and move to the music. I did not feel that urge. Think of when G Esteban, Ricky Martin, Santana's "Smooth", and other Latin singers get it going you can not stay still.

I hope as Jordin suggested they do 80's music next week...was that a hint to the viewer?

The family is in town this week, and were glued to AI last night. I think we commented more on the outfits then the singing! Kiki should not wear a dress with a big bow on her behind. I really wanted her and Melinda to just do better. It really could be anyone gone tonite - but am ready for Haley to go. Thanks again Jackie!!

I wasn't moved either. I don't know if I can listen to "smooth" again without Chris richardson whining/nasally sound distracting me. I have to play it today to remember how much I really love that song. He ruined it. I thought Blake was good. Other than that, I thought it was a sleeper last night.

First, I believe that American Idol should be for nonprofessionals however Melinda Doolittle is by far the best singer. "With that said" (don't I sound like Simon), I just go crazy when she does her after affects when she finishes a song. You know, she juts her head out and widens her eyes and does an "aw shucks" kinda thing. She puts on this amazed "who me" look as if she is sooooooo suprised that they like her. She acts too, too humble and it's just too, too fake and getting too, too old.

Jackie,
funny when I heard that it was jennnifer lopez week my first thought was why?. She in no way, is a musical icon as evidence by noone singing any of her music. I like Melinda and thought the dress she wore finally did her justice. Jordin Sparks is what this contest was supposed to be about. I like Blake and Chris too and think they will do well after the show. Well we will see who goes tonight probably Haley. Thanks for the recap

Melinda looked better this week than she has. Shorter hair, deeper necklines - makes her lack of a neck less noticible. I am with the other poster who is tired of seeing LaKisha's boobs. I think overall she looks good - don't mind that she wears tight clothes for such a big girl. But no need to let it all hang out.

I am so tired of hearing them sing old songs, really old songs, latin songs, country songs (you know it's coming) etc. What's next? The best of Barney the Dinosaur?

No wonder they don't sound so good. They're singing songs they have never heard before, and songs none of us care to hear. They should skip all the "genre" crap and let them sing something contemporary. It's not important for them to be able to sing in all those different ways - it's not like AI is going to make the winner record a 50's album, or a country album if they're a contemporary artist.

How can they get better and perfect their skills, when they're constantly having to learn a whole new set?

Dial Idol predicts buck booth hideously fat "Where's my baby's daddy? Oh he's in jail." LaKaisha will go home tonight!!

Gee, I hope so!!!!! She hasn't proved she can pull off other types of music. If she could pull off EVANESCENCE, FIONA APPLE, DIDO, OR AVRIL LAVIGNE, I might give her credit.

but she can't, so she needs to go now.

AND DIALIDOL SAYS SHE STINKS! yes!!!!!!!!

"Simon said her tactic is to wear the least amount of clothes. (Spot on!) Haley gave Simon the evil eye, but I agree with him."

Props to Simon for calling out Haley's tactic, BUT WHY HAS NO ONE CALLED OUT CHRIS R.'S "TIMBERFAKE" TACTIC?

By now, I figured one judge (Simon!) would have called him "Justin Timberfake."

It's pretty sad that Haley gets called for dressing slutty, but Timberfake isn't called out for being, well, Timberfake.

Like I have said before, Melinda & Lakisha have great voices, but they do not perform and capture an audience. When I watch Blake & Chris I am entertained though they may not be the best vocals. Jordin has a nice voice but I find her facial expressions and dance moves to be total cheese and something you might see at Disneyland. Chhheeeeeesssssse! Haley knows she's sticking around cuz of her sex appeal and plays on it as well as Sanjaya knows its about the hair and style he brings each week. Im glad Simon calls them on it. As for Chris, they have made mention of his Timberlake like style, but at least he can back it up with a great performance that keeps me tuned in. By and far though, I think Blake is the most marketable person on the show...

Dialidol also predicted Kiki would be in the bottom 2 last week & she was in the top 3! The only prediction they've even come close to getting right was when Chris Sleigh went home! Dialidol is a joke!

I was disappointed that the judges kept slamming the contestants because they weren't singing "singers" songs. I don't know tons about latin music, but what I've heard doesn't include many "singers" songs! Gloria Estefan? Pu...leaze!!!

I'm not feelin' the love for Melinda so much anymore. Jackie, you pegged it for me when you said you'd buy a CD of her singing oldies. I just don't think she can do contemporary music.

Jordin is my pick for the winner! She just has the complete package that I believe is what the American Idol is!

I, too, think Jordin will end up winning this year. I love her voice and would buy her CD's. She has "the look" and "the style" and doesn't inundate us with riffs every other note. I am totally rooting for her and have been since week two. I'll bet she comes back next week to WOW us again.

It's good to find someone with roughly the same point of view I do. There are some bizarre opinions out there. No I wasn't impressed Latin week at all. Blake was not on his game. Yes, I do realize Jordin is really good, and I'm moved off my set opinion that Melinda 'should' win.

Chris seemed limited in some way at the beginning. They keep applauding him, and I allow myself to go along and count him among the better ones, but is he really? The voice has never impressed.

Sanjaya's surprise was put down elsewhere, but I think he did a creditable job.
Does anyone think the music is just too loud? Brass when off their leash can really blast, and even Jennifer Lopez was overpowered.
