Sneak Peek: Tyler Perry's 'House of Payne' on TBS

I'm sure this show will have an audience, but I'm not quite as sure that the audience will include me.

Tyler Perry is popular these days, yet his work isn't always my cup of tea. When I saw some brief clips of Tyler Perry's House of Payne in a promo package from TBS, I thought I would give the show a try. I might still, but only for new TV fodder that I haven't seen before over the summer months.

I was sent a screener for the first episode, or a reasonable pre-release thereof. While the show has a fine cast, cute kids, a curmudgeon-uncle and a wise and loving aunt... there's one character which sort of turned me off.

Why do movies or TV shows feel they must create odd huge (fat or just plain tall) women characters out of men? I never enjoy that kind of role in a show, but I know that it's often done and done successfully on a commercial level. Aren't there enough huge, weird, intimidating and such women who are actually women? It could be just me, but whenever I see that sort of "man playing big weird woman" role and the humor surrounding it, I feel it's a bit off-putting or sophomoric. Or something.

And, I realize that it's Tyler Perry in the role for this one. But, that's not enough to make me enjoy it. The show has some clever writing and the rest of the cast is enjoyable, but I'm just not seeing this one atop my personal summer favorites list. However, if you enjoy that sort of humor and Tyler Perry, definitely check it out.

The series premiere is Wednesday, June 6 at 9 PM ET/PT. You can look in on the website for all kinds of stuff House of Payne-related.

I love Tyler Perry's work and enjoyed the week long preview of House of Payne last year so I'm really looking forward to it.

LOL...I have no idea who T Perry is. I have seen the ads for the show, but did not hold any interest for me. I am not a stupid comedy fan: Will Farrell-Adam Sandler-????. So I doubt I will watch it. In my book there is comedy and what the ****.

HBO had trailers for many new coming shows and 2nd season of many (Big Love) returning. I know Jackie you do not have HBO, but some look interesting.

Bachelor and DWTS wrap this week...BB hurry and get on TV.

Sorry about multiple comments, just keep finding things.

We all called this one:

The real estate mogul issued a statement Friday saying he has informed the U.S. television network he is "moving on from 'The Apprentice' to a major new TV venture," though he declined to elaborate.

Delee - Tyler Perry's is a very talented, brilliant writer whose work is mostly geared toward the black audience, but anyone could enjoy it. His most well known character is Madea who started off in plays that have now been turned into movies like Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion.

His comedy is not like Will Farrel or Adam Sandler. He's truly in a league of his own. I love his work and am really looking forward to all his future projects.

Thanks Kim, I didn't know who he was either, though I probably would recognise him if I saw him and didn't put the name and the face together.

Speaking of HOB etc, Delee.... Is anyone watching the Tudors on Showtime? I am catching up thru On-Demand.... it's a time period I know little about, and it's interesting to get the history out of it...and look at Jonathan R-Meyers too. I guess I loved Rome so much. Costumes are great as well... and I can't wait for Dexter to come back on!

Sydney, I am a Royal and history lover, but I do not get Showtime. My son is watching it and says it is marvelous. I will buy it when it comes out in the stores. When I heard it was going to be shown I was like DARN. TU Kim about T Perry, now I will have to check that out.

Delee--- It's interesting to see how history was not just about war but about the church and religion. I forget that Henryt he 8th separated and declared the Church of England into being, and this series does have Sir Thomas Moore as a regular... and they are fighting the writings of Luther, etc...

Have you seen Rome then if you like this kind of show. It's available for rent, only 2 seasons though (sob) I think you get HBO but not Showtime based on your previous comment.

Dla has mentioned this elsehwere but I am looking forward to seeing how Lipstick Jungle fills in for my Sex and the City void... Not sure if it's this summer or a fall show. I bet Jackie listed it a few posts back.

Rescue Me starts it's 4th season on FX in early June, and I will watch that.

Totally unrelated...

I'm watching Deadliest Catch for the first time. Why haven't I given this show a chance before? This is really interesting and there's something about hard working blue-collar guys that gets my blood boiling ;) There's some real cuties in this show!!

Orkmommy, there are a lot of D Catch fans here. I see it at least 2 times a week and Discovery is running past seasons in the afternoon at 3p E. Welcome aboard !!!

now I know why we all come to this blog, no one else understands why we watch all these shows!! :) My FH is a huge DOG fan. Tuesday nights, everything is in a rush so he can be in bed by 9 watching... Orkmommy, I know you watch Grey's, I missed the last episode! I can't believe it! it may have been the margaritas that put me to sleep.

Okay you BB fans, did anyone catch on VH1 "Where are they now?" episode? Well it included your favorites Will & Mike Boogie!!! YUCK!! Mike talked about how famous he and Will were, even if they hadn't gone on the show. How everything he touched turn GOLD!! (Whatever) He has openned several new resturants and Will was all to eagered to investt. There are sooooo many people who want to invest in his resturants that he has to turn many away. LA hot spots knows a good thing when they see it!!! (Someone please gag me with a spoon)

Will has started his own line of skin care products. KIRBY Cosmeticeuticals and of course Boogie felt that since Will invested in his projects, it's only fair to reciprocate the favor!!!

It was only about 8 mins., seemed they were on forever!!! Jackie's right about Will doing some segment for E! DR 90210. But he's not sure he could be committed to a project long term, there was only so much of his greatness to go around!!! Again whatever!!

Oh here was to the killer, Will said that he developed the word "Showmance" and he was the only one who could use it. If anyone else tried to use it without his consent/written permission, he would sue!! How in the heck can you patent a word!!!!

Check it out, better yet DON'T!!!

Kim, that's so funny... I hate Boogie so much, that I refused to take my 21 year old, hip step-son to Le Deux when we took him to LA over New Years to see the hot spots.

And Orkmommy -- yep, several of us watch Deadliest Catch, as delee said. So glad you got hooked (hey, I'm only following delee's "welcome aboard" pun). Looking forward to your comments...

It's explained A LOT to me about why guys are the way they are. If you cut your finger off, pull your own tooth out with pilers, fall into icy waters after 24 straight hours doing hard labor, you say it's nothing and keep going.... an unwritten rule of men. No wonder we can't get them to go to the doctor or ask for directions very easily!

You obviously missed the entire point of the Medea character. I loved the test run and will continue to watch as long as it is on the air.

Initially I the show could use some better acting. However, the show has really progressed since then, the characters are well matched and the show is hilarious..Thanks Tyler for sharing the joy!
