TV Newsy Bits - Monday, December 3, 2007

Yes, that's snow. Well, icy snow. Yesterday we had our first snow adding up to more than a dusting -- about two inches here. But then it turned to ice coming down, then rain in the overnight hours. So, most of it is gone as I type this. What was left probably blew away with the wind gusts of up to 50 MPH here throughout the day.

Despite the snow, then ice, then rain ... I saw Roofus the cat this morning. He was jumping onto the roof of the abandoned building, his probable access to the roofs. Although the building certainly isn't safe for a human's weight on the upper floors (the entire back top story has crumbled), I'm sure there are plenty of hidey-holes for a small cat to get out of the weather.

On the home front, my remaining cat is still looking for Teaser -- crying if she's in a room alone, jumping at any noise and heading out towards it apparently thinking she's going to greet him. She's also grown very clinging even though she'll never like laps or being carried. It hasn't been easy.

In today's TV Newsy Bits:
  • Tonight is the season finale of Heroes. I'll be watching it and writing it up, but don't expect to get it online until 11:30 PM ET or so.
  • Tonight is also the big holiday-themed season finale of The Closer. It's a two-hour special event starting at 8 PM ET/PT on TNT. I have watched the screener of the episode and highly recommend it if you're a fan of the show ... even if you're not.
  • Also, after The Closer, there's a new episode of Saving Grace, kicking up the start of four new weekly episodes of this show. I have them on screeners, but have only watched the one which is airing tonight so far. So, that would start at 10 PM ET/PT in most areas.
  • The WGA turned down the most recent offer to settle the writers strike ... so it goes on. Leno (NBC) has terminated or is terminating employees after he promised them they'd be okay through the holidays. Letterman, in a different situation as his production company owns the show (Worldwide Pants), is paying the staff of both his show and The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson through the holidays at least. I always knew David Letterman had to be a good guy.
  • A few folks have mentioned the upcoming Big Brother. As it's in open casting now, it's highly unlikely it will be a celebrity version. From what I've previously reported, we shouldn't expect it before March or so.
Today's musical non-sequitur:
Look around, the leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground.
-- "Hazy Shade of Winter" by Simon and Garfunkel

Hi Jackie... I know that both you and your other cat are missing Teaser. I'm so sorry you have to go thru this.

Wanted to thank you for reminding us of The Closer and Saving Grace tonight. Also thought I'd mention there is a new Life on tonight as well and it will also be on this week at it's regular time for those who don't want to miss any of it.

CBS to unveil revamped schedule
Network plans ninth edition of 'Big Brother'
By JOSEF ADALIAN

With hopes for a quick settlement of the WGA strike dimming, CBS is getting ready to unveil a revamped winter sked -- and that includes moving forward with plans for an in-season edition of reality hit "Big Brother."
Ninth installment of the summer staple will make its bow Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 9 p.m., Eye insiders confirmed Monday. Julie Chen-hosted reality skein will also air Wednesday and Sunday nights at 8 p.m.

On Tuesday nights, “Brother” will act as a lead-in for “Jericho,” which will return for its second season Feb. 12 at 10 p.m. CBS revealed that news to fans of the show Monday afternoon via its website.

Jackie,
Does a winter version of Big Brother preclude our usual summer installment of the show?

I'm sure it's been very difficult for both you and Scherzo. It kind of makes you wish you could communicate to her the news of Teaser's passing, just so she'd understand. That's a long time the three of you spent together as a family. I feel so sad for you, still.

On the other hand, it's good news to hear that our Roofus is safe and surviving the northeastern weather.

Sounds like you've had the same weather pattern we're experiencing upstate. I stocked up on my hot chocolate supplies on my last shopping trip (I'm not a coffee or tea person) and I'm quite content staying inside. We live close to Lake Ontario so we've got a few inches on the ground and the plows are out and about.

Last night and tonight we have watched the 2 part modern remake of the Wizard of OZ called TIN MAN on Sci Fi Channel.

I'm sure they will repeat it this month. It's very interesting to see all the different takes on the old story we know so well, and it's done in a way that I never imagined. I'm not a big one on remakes... love the originals for most things, but I am writing in to recommend you watch it if indeed it repeats... and let us all know what you think. I'm giving it a thumbs up for originality and decent acting.

Sorry all - Tin Man is more than 2 parts.

Jackie -- About a year ago, my friend lost her beloved Gingy, with whom she had an amazing relationship like you described for many years.

She too had a second cat who definitely was not a lap cat, hid from people when they came over, and generally was very different. Once Gingy was gone, the other cat took a little time being lost, but then underwent a big personality change. Now she's always out on the couch or rocking chair, has become VERY talkative, patrols the kitchen to do her job if there are any mice in the wintertime, comes to greet guests, and has taken purring to the big leagues. And this is a 16 year old cat. Wonder if Scherzo will through anything like this after awhile.

Good to see your picture of snow!
