LOST - "LaFleur" - A Thirty Second Review

Jackie's TV Blog, Lost

We moved forward a bit as we jumped back and forth between a three-year span. Here's the scoop:
  • Locke's turning the wheel in the Orchid Station did stop the time jumping for the island.
  • That doesn't mean the viewers stopped time jumping.
  • Faraday, Miles, Juliet, Sawyer, and Jin are stranded in 1974 on the island.
  • That's not to be confused with being stuck in 1973 Manhattan.
  • Sawyer (and Juliet) saved a damsel in distress.
  • Said damsel and her (now late) husband are part of the Dharma Initiative.
  • The husband was murdered and she was about to be murdered by "hostiles."
  • Richard Albert is the leader of the hostiles and still looks exactly the same (no matter the year). Surprise, surprise.
  • Sawyer and cohorts were kind of taken in by the Dharma folks.
  • Sawyer is now a flower. Er, he's going by the name Jim LaFleur, which is Jim the Flower in French. (See, all those years of studying the language certainly have made a difference in my life.)
  • In the beginning, Sawyer was told he's not Dharma material. Heh. He definitely isn't!
  • They must have worked their way into the hearts and minds of Dharma as they're there three years later and in with the in crowd of the initiative.
  • Sawyer now is with Juliet and deems Kate a distant memory.
  • They're still waiting for Locke to return.
  • But it's Jack, Kate, and Hurley who turn up.
  • Now we know why Jin was wearing the Dharma uniform.
  • And, Sawyer may just fall for Kate all over again, eh?
They've discontinued the LOST Entangled videos, but here's the video briefing of the episode from the ABC website.

I didn't get a nose bleed but the time travel last night was a bit much for my poor brain.
I am confused by one thing I thought the time travel could not change history but apparently it must.
The reason Juliette came to the island was because of the problems of pregnant women not survivng pregnancy or being able to give birth.
It would seem in 1974 it was not a problem.
Also Charlotte disappeared and became a child but Ben who was also associated with the Dharma group did not. Perhaps he was not on the island in 1974.
A couple of episodes back we were all wondering what happened to Ben when he got beat up before leaving L.A.
I have a theory on that (this is not a spoiler and comes from my head not from something I read) I think Ben attacked and killed Penny Whitmore and was injured by her in the fight.
I think this will give Desmond reason to come back to the island to seek his revenge on Ben.

I am hopeful that after all the time I have "invested" in watching Lost that when the series ends I won't feel disappointed like I did with the series finale of X-Files.

Jackie, I hope you are making it OK with your bad knee. After all you've been through in the past 10 months or so I hope you can make it until it is the right time for you to have the surgery. I'm rooting for you girlfriend.

I wasn't surprised to see Charlotte child there. After all, Faraday told child Charlotte that she had to get off the island and never return as she would die there.

She remembered it because it happened in her childhood. He didn't remember as it hadn't happened yet for him.

I think Ben might is there somewhere on the island. Remember, the music playing on the VW Dharma bus was Shambala by Three Dog Night. That was a 1973 song. I think he hasn't offed the Dharma crew yet.

I did not remember about Faraday telling Charlotte child to leave the island.
We know Ben is among the injured because the hispanic guy took John Locke to see the injured and he saw Ben.
When the hispanic guy asked John if he knew him (Ben), John answered yes he is the man who killed me.
I didn't catch the Three Dog Night song. I am disappointed that I didn't because back in the day I was a Big TDN fan. When they were just a fledging band my college friend and I went to a TDN concert. We sat in the front row and paid $3.00 a piece to get in! I don't think there 500 people at the concert! Those were the days! LOL

Jackie S. said...

They didn't show the Charlotte warning last night, but she mentioned it before she died. It fits. He's the "scary man" who told her she would die there. But he couldn't change the future apparently as she did die there.

As for the TDN song -- it was a season or two back when Hurley discovered the Dharma VW bus. When it got running, the song was playing. Then the flashbacks had Ben killing his father in the van with gas as the song played ... he killed the rest of the Dharma settlement the same way.

There you are jackie... I was getting worried... you know we worry when we don't hear from you.

I thought this was a great episode and lynn1 I don't think we're going to be disappointed when it ends. I'm betting that it all gets answered.

That's some theory about Ben. I hope you're wrong cause I don't want Penny to die...

I'm confused about Ben stopping John from hanging himself, and then he kills him... and hangs him. What's that all about. When John mentioned Hawkins, Ben did an about face. Somebody explain please, if you can???? Thanks.

lynn1 said...

Jackie,
Thanks for the memory jolt. I do remember the music from Hurley and the VW.

MEB, I think Ben killed John because he had all the info he needed to get everybody to go back to the island. Ben did not know that they had to go through Eloise Hawkins to get everyone back but that tidbit of info clinched it for him.
He does not want John to return to the island alive or be the leader, he wants to be in control. Plus he is pure evil. I think that is what the war will be about good and evil.
It is amazing to me how many people Ben has killed with no apparent consequences. My husband keeps reminding that this is just a TV show not real life! LOL

meb said...

Wow Lynn1... you have such great thought processes to come up with this stuff. I hadn't figured that out and doubt I would have. So bottom line is that Ben has all the info he needs to get the others to go back to the island, including the ring to convince Sun...something he didn't know either until John told him. Of course, Ben must not realize that John will come back alive, and still possibly become the leader of the island group...that is if they all ever get back to the current year. Thanks.

lynn1 said...

MEB,
I don't know how good my thought process is when it comes to LOST. There are more wrinkles in this plot line than on my face!

Anonymous said...

Lynn1, I am impressed. I love this show, but like I tell you every week, I am completely Lost on trying to figure it all out.

Who is the man in the glasses supposed to be?

And Ben is very, very evil. I think Charles Whitmore was on the money about him.

And doesn't the new baby have to be Hurley? Or is Hurley old enough for that birth year?

Anonymous said...

I know we are over to Suvivor post now, but Zoetawny I had to mention your great graphic. It fits!

lynn1 said...

Sizzie,
It had not occurred to me that the new baby could be Hurley.

I am interested on what gave you the hint or clue that it might be Hurley.
There are so many hidden references and obscure meanings in this show. It boggles my mind but I love it!
I agree this graphic rocks Zoetwany.

****

I think it is the parents' hair. And while both their hair styles fit with the 1970s, I don't think they would have given Horace long curly hair without a reason. But, other things don't fit for Hurley. I am interested to see if the same person at different ages can be on the island at the same time....like Ben, for one.

I know when Hurley (way back) found the VW van, he talked of his father, but I have forgotten his story.

Every one who was there as a child has been called back to the island, so everyone who is called back had to have been there as a child? (sounds like one of those written logic questions on a test, doesn't it?) lol

I just looked around at some of the Lost message boards (something I stopped doing after the first season because the show is so complicated it made my head spin). The boards all seem sure the baby is someone we will know but no one I read thought Hurley. So, I don't know where my thought came in. lol

I flat out loved this epidsode!

For starters, I've been rooting for Juliet & Saywer since they were both left on the island at the end of last season. I really hope Kate doesn't screw everything up. Let her & Jack be all depressed together and let Juliet & Sawyer stay happy together.

As for the baby, I had not considered Hurley as a possibility. I had considered Ethan from back in the early days. He was always involved with everything that went on. I'm suspicious that Amy had an affair with one of the "hostiles" and that's the father of the baby (Ethan), not that Horace guy.

Other baby theories include Jack. It's entirely possible at some point (alive) Christian Shepherd was on the island and he could be the father of Amy's baby. We already know he got around.

Caroline said...

Now the other big thing that intrigued me was the brief glimpse of the 4 toed statue by Juliet, Saywer, Miles & Daniel. I wish we knew what time period that was that the statue was still standing. It was holding in each hand a giant ankh (the same symbol as Paul's pendant). Apparently this is an Egyptian symbol of fertility.

I'm inclined to believe that either the necklace or the statue may tie into the birthing issues that occur on the island. I'll assume in 1974 the statue has already been destroyed. And had Saywer & Juliet not intervened, the pendant Paul was wearing may not still be around. Maybe having the pendant in her drawer saved Amy's life...kinda like a glorified good luck charm.

And then just to make everyone's heads swim some more...I read this next part on another Lost sight. Someone claimed that there is an Egyptian sun God named RA and that maybe that's who Richard Alpert is. But I'm not really sure how that would fit in if all of a sudden The Others were ancient Gods or something, but it was an interesting enough idea that I thought I'd share it here.

meb said...

Man...I thought I was lost before, but now, fuggetaboudit! I'm just not able to get my mind to work fast enough to figure out any of this. You guys can just keep writing and help me stay current, or I'll really be lost.

lynn1 said...

Wow I really love hearing everyones theories and ideas about what is going on.

Sizzie, I just can't get my mind to the point where I can see Hurley is the new baby. You may be right though.

I think the idea of RA, the statue, the Ankh necklace and Richard Alpert is interesting and could all tie in to explain some things.
It especially is interesting in regard to Richard. He never ages and has an exotic look about him that could be Eyptian.
I have notice and so have many others that at times he seems to have on eyeliner which was a big deal to the ancient Eyptains.

There is without a doubt a religous theme that has been brought up through the entire series.
There have been many bibical references that I am aware of and probably there have been references to other religions and philosophies that I haven't caught.
Doesn't the word Dharma have some association with one of the eastern philosphies or religons?

Beside being entertaining this show has really made me think.

I am now thinking I better get back to real life and get off my duff! LOL

I agree lynn1, and explore the old philosphers and the Bible and a variety of belief systems.

I based my Hurley the baby strictly on the Horace and wife's (omg I've already forgotten her name!) hair being curly. Silly of me. I do think Hurley's connection to the island will be an interesting story when they get to it.

This week they talked repeatedly of the sub leaving...that has to be significant, either in who it takes or who it brings back...or if it can't leave.

When Lost replays the next week, there are subtitles. It it sometimes helpful to see them.

Thanks for the quick rundown of this ep of Lost. It's kind of becoming burdensome to watch the ridiculous amount of TV I record on TIVO especially with a replay of Mad Men season 2 ep 1 last night. If I turn to it I can't turn away.

i've sort of lost my appetite for Lost--and admittedly I was never a huge fan, just a casual watcher, so trying to watch an episode now is an exercise in futility that I do not want to undertake. But for all you Losties out there--enjoy it for me!

This week's show (3/11) is a repeat.

I think Ben is a bad guy too. Which means that this show's producers will have a twist and make him the good guy in the end.

Anybody else watching tonight and on line?

The theories that I have read that were posted last week are excellent. You guys are s-h-a-r-p! You have caught a lot of things that I missed.

meb, I am just as lost as you are! I feel like I need a flashlight every week. I have no idea why I love this show so much.

I think the baby is Sawyer. He is sent back to the US when Amy dies and Horace becomes an alcoholic. Adopted by the people he knows as his parents (in Jasper, Alabama, haha). Then Locke's daddy romances and swindles his mom, possibly thinking Sawyer is his son.
I don't really believe this but I was trying to tie everyone together somehow.

Donna in Alabama said...

The baby is Ethan!! Yikees!

Anonymous said...

Hey, I'm here. Okay, remind the old lady, who was Ethan?

Donna in Alabama said...

he was the dark haired guy with a flat nose. he tried to kill charlie and claire in the jungle.

Poor Sawyer doesn't know whether to poop or go blind!

I don't want Kate to mess up Juliet and Sawyer. They seem so happy together.

Sun just made me LOL

Anonymous said...

I had to LOL at Sun. "I lied." I thought Ben was in the hospital or morgue.

Donna in Alabama said...

Oh no, Ben wasn't going to miss that plane taking off.

Seeing Sun do that, she may have been the one to beat the shit out of him.

I like Juliet and Sawyer as a couple too.

Who is the little twerp? He sure lets a little power go to his head.

Jack is just never satisfied.

Ohhhh, Sawyer is lording it over Jack. He is the big man in charge now.

Wonder how Sun will get to where they are since it looks like they are ahead of the others in time.

Yikes! When I saw the kid I knew who it was.

I am still lost! LOL Catch up with you tomorrow. Night.

Donna in Alabama said...

Hope you sleep well, Becky! Until tomorrow!

meb said...

Well... I can't blog and watch at the same time because my computer is in a different room... but I wanted to come and comment.

I loved Sun knocking Ben out... she just may have been the one who beat him up... love the idea.

I like Jack, so I'm not too thrilled with Sawyer acting the way he is.

Looks like next week Juliette tells Kate to stay away from Sawyer. Girl fight coming up???

Ben is there as a young boy, so you know that Sun needs to go back in time to find Jin.

Jack looked like he thought it was just fine for Sawyer to be the big guy in charge. Jack had enough of that before.

This was good. And you guys are right, it was over before it even got started. This show is so good time just flies by,

It is the last season, and I hate it, cause I love this show.

Tomorrow, after work guys.

Can someone refresh my memory about the skeleton Hurley found in the van a few seasons back? All I remember is that it was wearing the workman jumpsuit that Jack was given last night. Does anyone remember how he had been killed? All I can remember is that they found the skeleton with beer and someone thought his name was Workman.

Lucy2 - "Roger" Work Man was Ben's father -- Ben gassed him and the entire Dharma camp.

I have a new post up on last night's episode -- sorry it's a bit late!
