Off Topic: That Was the Week It Was - 9/06/09

Time seems to go by so quickly -- another week gone in a flash. I remember when I was a child, time seemed to almost stand still. Nowadays, I blink my eyes and it's time to pay the rent once again. So, it's Sunday and time for my journey through the past week in words and photographs I've taken. If you're looking for the Big Brother news, use this BB blog link to get there. Otherwise, grab a cup of joe and settle in.

This week's weather here in Plainfield (NJ) was almost picture perfect for the first time since May. We had comfortable daytime highs, cool evenings, and not a one tremendous downpour. It reminded me of the weather in San Diego, but without the early morning fog. Low humidity and clear skies. I love it!

I started taking both of my halfway decent digital cameras with me (I also have a $15 one, but that one doesn't count) as I did my days. My Canon PowerShot A560 is technically a better camera -- 7.1 megapixels, a better zoom and all. But my first digital camera, my Pentax Optio 33L, with its lowly 3.2 megapixels, does much better macro shots and has cool filters the Canon doesn't. It was the Pentax which got me hooked on photography.

On the home front, I don't have much news. I worked, I did my Big Brother blog posts for here and TV Squad, I slept, I ate ... and then I did it all over again. On Tuesday in the early evening, I went to yet another meeting at City Hall regarding my landlord. While my building's elevator is fixed, there are other issues still outstanding. One thing I complained about was the main fire alarm for the building -- many of the sensors have been dismantled and I said it wasn't operating.

Okay, try to make a liar out me, eh? The day after I complained, there I was peacefully watching television when the building fire alarm sounded. And it went on and on. I called the landlord's number, got the answering service. Of course, I had checked for fire first! Finally, after nearly an hour of the loud alarm, I called the non-emergency number for the fire department. No, they didn't have a signal coming from our building. They sent their trucks over and the firemen turned off the alarm. The next night, the alarm sounded again at 12:30 AM. Again, the fire department didn't get the signal.

I stand by my statement that it doesn't work. The way it's supposed to work is an alarm going into the fire department. There are about 40 apartments in the building. If, heaven forbid, there's ever a real fire, we need the fire department response. Just because it makes a lot of noise now here in the building does not mean it's functioning properly. By the way, there was a faulty sensor head or something like that causing the alarm to sound -- no fire.

Enough of that. Onto the week in photos (clicking on an image will open it larger in a new window) --

Sitting in illustrator mode

I took this shot with the illustrator mode of the Pentax. Now, my Canon can't do this kind of shot. It was taken out the train window in Dunellen, NJ.

Uh-oh -- bigger and meaner

The fairly innocent carpenter bees on the flowers were replaced by bigger, nastier, and more evil-looking blacker carpenter bees. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe the initial ones I photographed were bumblebees. They seemed really small, though. These new bees are a good inch long. And, they're not thrilled with the paparazzi.

It's a sweater vest!

The new bees look like they're wearing fuzzy sweater vests with a big black circle on the back.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign

And the sign said everybody welcome, come in, kneel down and pray

But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all,
I didn't have a penny to pay, so I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said thank you Lord for thinking about me, I'm alive and doing fine
-- "Signs" by The Five Man Electrical Band

The Friends Meeting House sign, Plainfield, NJ

Is it John, Paul, Ringo, or George?

All I know is that it's a beatle ... er, beetle. It was teeny and an iridescent blue in the sunlight. I took this shot with the Pentax -- the Canon would have blurred it. The beetle was only about an eighth of an inch long. Bridgewater, NJ.

I see dead people

While school started Wednesday in Plainfield, most of the other schools around the area aren't starting until after Labor Day. This lad slept each morning on the train this week. He wasn't dressed for school, nor did he seem to be going off to work. I don't know where he got on or where he got off. He could be a cipher. NJ Transit, Raritan Valley Line.

That rocks!

Er, those rocks. Just some landscaping rocks. But I like them. Bridgewater, NJ.

Plainfield YMCA in sepia

I took this shot from the Plainfield City Hall steps in the early evening on Tuesday.

More powerful than a speeding locomotive

Okay, it wasn't speeding. This is my train as it pulls into the NJ Transit Plainfield Train Station. I'm faced with too many decisions each trip as we're getting almost all double-deckers these days. On the single level train, I usually grabbed the same seat each trip. Now I have to decide upstairs, downstairs, main level ... ack!

Oh no, you din't!

Yes, Pete. I did. This is my dear train buddy Pete. He hasn't been taking the train lately since they dropped his station to the ... well, wherever dead train stations go. He only lives a few blocks away from me, but I haven't seen him in a while. It was like a reunion as he and I were both stuck at the station with a canceled train on Friday.

Roofus Weather

The weather this week is the kind which brings out a certain roof cat. North Street, Plainfield, NJ.

The Latina Jesus Ladies

I told you about them before. This is the Hispanic contingent of the Jesus Ladies of Downtown Plainfield. Armed with their Watchtowers, they're a bit like a street gang roaming about looking for converts.

Roofus finally faces the camera

I get few front-on shots of Roofus the cat. But, here's one! North Street, Plainfield, NJ

A steeple and an almost full moon

Now, I took this with the Canon. I should have stuck to the Pentax. It was taken early evening from the steps of Plainfield City Hall -- the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church steeple with the moon lighting the way. My goal with the shot is obvious. Alas, it didn't come out as good as I wanted. I blame the Canon.

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Into Dawn Sunday 9/06

The big event of the night was their fashion show -- something BB wanted them to do, but they didn't want to do. But, once they got started, they had fun. For a while alliances, misery, lies, and evil were put aside for a good time.
  • They declared Natalie the winner. I think Michele and Kevin did much better.
  • They had beer and wine.
  • Once again no one questioned why the show is allowing an 18-year-old to drink alcohol.
  • Although I think Kevin has doubts with Natalie, it doesn't appear he will turn on her.
  • It still looks like Jordan, Kevin, and Natalie in the final three.
  • Of those three ... I guess I'd like Kevin for the win.
  • I guess.

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Into Saturday Evening 9/05

Kevin either looks pensive or worried. He shouldn't be worried -- he won the power of veto. Here are the day's happenings from inside that Big Brother House pf Whirling Dervishes:
  • Michele and Jordan both studied dates for the upcoming comp.
  • It did them no good.
  • They've been sporting the new clothes from their luxury comp.
  • Kevin muttered a lot last night and this morning. He listed the times Natalie betrayed him or didn't have his back. Plus, he thinks his man is cuter.
  • Then the feeds went out for the veto, Kevin returning with the win.
  • They think they have five days before the eviction. They are unaware there will be a live eviction Tuesday night.
  • Kevin is starting to act on/voice his doubts about Natalie to Natalie.
  • He asked her to swear on their final two deal. She offered to swear on her engagement. He scoffed and said he didn't know if it really exists.
  • They're planning it to be a Michele eviction with the final three being Natalie, Jordan, and Kevin.
  • Kevin told Natalie he wants to make a fake final two deal with Jordan as a cover.
  • Jordan apparently did so bad in the PoV comp that she asked the diary room not to show the video to the world.
  • Natalie continues to gloat about her victories.
  • Kevin says they have "trust issues."

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Noms and More 9/04

Okay, Natalie's mysterious Pandora's Box has taken away her shot at playing for power of veto. I think that's the only truth being told. The boyfriend story was fabricated with Kevin at her side. Yet Kevin doesn't know the details of Pandora's Box either.
  • Natalie has been saying that she planned to put Michele and Kevin on the block.
  • Will the fact that only Kevin can try to save himself affect her choice? Or will she let her ally sink or swim on his own?
  • There were little people in the period of blocked feeds. Or, perhaps a single little person. Kevin was scared. There was also a cockroach lady. I don't think I want to know.
  • Another truth was that a picture of Natalie's boyfriend was on the box. But the rest seems to all be fabricated.
  • They got ready for their fashion show -- something Kevin said BB wanted them to do.
  • Nominations went down as expected. Natalie nominated Kevin and Michele.
  • Jordan Natalie again confirmed her final two deal with Jordan.
  • Natalie's speech was apparently very hurtful to Michele.
  • Why am I not surprised?
  • Kevin told Jordan and Michele he thinks there was more to Pandora's Box than the engagement. Why would someone hide an engagement and then say it was a prank?
  • Natalie said that she's not a good liar.
  • I say that she lies so much that she believes her own lies to be the truth.
  • Hey ... is that a pathological liar?
  • Kevin is very worried about going home. It's two against one in the PoV.
  • Kevin thinks that Michele is trying to work both Jordan and Natalie.
  • Kevin should worry. Natalie doesn't seem all that concerned that she can't save him.
  • Are you surprised?

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds - Friday Evening 9/04

After a long feeds break, they're back. I'm confused. Natalie got her mystery power. Kevin is telling her that she needs to explain herself because right now no one will want her in the final two with them -- she said something about "reversal." Now she's making up a story about her boyfriend and said she got screwed out of playing for the PoV.

Earlier she apparently told them she was screwed out of 500 grand but they thought it was the level of the coup d'etat. Now she's telling them her story. If she didn't open the box, she could participate in PoV. Open it and she can't.

Of course, now she's telling stories. I think the only real truth is that she can't play in the veto. I feel she chose some kind of greedy option. She's not making sense. Michele and Jordan are leery of the story.

She's embellishing a bit too much for me. The nominations haven't gone down and I'm just sitting here baffled. We have no clue what happened with the Pandora's Box.

Big brother 11 Live Feeds Friday Daytime 9/04

Natalie's HOH robe, crown, and shades put Dustin's to shame.

Here are the day's events from that Big Brother House of Lazabouts:
  • Both Jordan and Michele think they might be making progress with deals with Kevin and Natalie.
  • I don't think so.
  • Kevin and Natalie have a final two pact that they're just not bringing up for discussion with Michele and Jordan. As a matter of fact, they're denying it. Natalie told them they only had a final four deal.
  • Ants and more ants. I hope they give Natalie bug nightmares.
  • Natalie and Jordan talked about how they don't trust Kevin.
  • Sigh. Jordan thinks Natalie's being truthful.
  • Natalie still plans to nominate Michele and Kevin. Of course, she doesn't want Kevin to leave.
  • During an outdoor lockdown, a smaller table was put in the kitchen.
  • Kevin and Natalie are still plotting to drive Michele bonkers. Apparently the diary room has nixed all of their plans.
  • Good.
  • Michele is probably bonkers enough being in the house with them.
  • The feeds have now been blocked with trivia for a while. I'm assuming it's the nominations ceremony.
  • BB was building something for the POV earlier, but since they haven't had nominations yet ...
  • I'll update when I find out.

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Into Friday 9/04

Oh, no! Don't drink wine, Jordan!

Here's the scoop from inside that Big Brother House of Female Bonding:
  • After the luxury clothing comp (blocked to the feeds), the three gals in the house sat down to pizza and wine.
  • Natalie, reinforcing the idea that she doesn't have blood on her hands, told Michele and Jordan how it was all Kevin and she's not Kevin.
  • She also told them she would be putting Kevin on the block.
  • Mind you, just a few hours earlier she told Kevin she was with him to the final two and she keeps her word.
  • Natalie's HOH room blatantly screamed, "I'm over 21!" It had Mike's Hard Lemonade and a college graduation stuffed bear.
  • I don't expect Jordan to pick up on it, but c'mon Michele!
  • Kevin suggested they do a fashion show with the new clothes. He quickly declared it wasn't his idea and the feeds got blocked. BB must want them to do a fashion show, eh?
  • She got eight pounds of Red Vines ... I wonder if a free coupon for a dentist comes with that.
  • In her letter from her father, he warned her that to win is good, but not to win at any cost.
  • Huh, she is going to nominate Kevin. She and Kevin talked about it.
  • She will nominate Kevin and Michele, get Jordan on their side, then vote out Michele.
  • Now, that will go kerflooey if they don't get Jordan to vote their way or if Michele wins PoV.
  • Michele told Kevin that Natalie doesn't trust her.
  • Kevin told Michele he doesn't want to be in the final two with Jordan (she's popular).
  • Kevin and Michele also believe Natalie is popular with the jury.
  • I'd rather a Kevin/Michele final two than any scenario with Natalie in there.
  • Kevin and Michele decided to get Jordan on their side and target Natalie.
  • But we know Natalie can't be targeted until after someone goes home.
  • And so it goes, like sand through the hourglass, these are the dwindling days from inside the Big Brother 11 house.

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Into Thursday Night 9/03

We kept getting this message ... at 11:45 PM ET. Say what? Now the Jets game delayed the live show here, but ...! (BTW - the Jets won.)

Apparently the super long feeds block that got me thinking Pandora's Box was actually a luxury comp in which they got all kinds of clothing.

It looks like they cleaned up!

Oh, what a shame. All of the clothes Natalie got are too big for her. Maybe she should just keep wearing the same clothes or keep mooching off of others like she has done all season so far.

Here's what happened before the feeds went down:
  • Kevin thought it was great they showed Natalie with the dragonfly.
  • Natalie gloated over her win.
  • Again and again.
  • Natalie told Kevin he's the reason she got this far and she won't betray him.
  • They want to either both sleep or at least Kevin sleep in the room with Jordan and Michele to keep them from talking together.
  • Kevin thinks Pandora's Box will be back.
  • Natalie thinks he's tripping.
  • Still no HOH room as I post this and no nominations talk.
  • But I bet we can all guess the nominations!
Added at 12:45 AM ET -- Natalie just told Michele and Jordan she will be putting Kevin on the block. I'll believe it when I see it.

Big Brother 11 Live Eviction Show Blog Party - 9/03

Big Brother 11 Blog Logo

The show is delayed by Jets football here in the NYC viewing area. I won't be able to provide the major updates as it airs as is my normal practice. However, if you're viewing the show on time, you're invited to post updates in the comments area -- that would be greatly appreciated! (Yes, I'm talking about you, ChaCha!)

Everyone is welcome, bring your own snacks and beverages! Late tonight or tomorrow morning (depends when I get to really see the show), my show review will be posted on TV Squad.

Ack. Jeff evicted -- Kevin broke the tiebreaker.
Double ack - Natalie won HOH.

WAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Overnight Into Thursday 9/03

Gee, a banner plane was spotted over the house yesterday!

Okay, I lied. The banner plane was created by Zoetawny just for us. Here's the scoop from the Big Brother House of Wishful Thinking:
  • BB gave Jeff his wine -- well, he's the one who was bugging them about it.
  • Kevin, angry that Jeff didn't call him to share it, took a glass and then poured it down the toilet.
  • He said he just didn't want Jeff to have it.
  • Of course, he didn't say that to Jeff.
  • Natalie and Kevin made a calendar out of the modeling clay so they could study event dates in the house.
  • Michele told Jordan if they don't win veto this week, all will be over.
  • Jeff and Jordan were called to the diary room together.
  • Natalie cheated at chess and played by her own rules again with Kevin.
  • The pranks continued in the house. Michele got sprayed by the sink.
  • Michele approached Jeff asking how she can get back at Natalie and Kevin (for the pranking).
  • Natalie, when pranking or cheating at chess, gets over the top obnoxious dancing around with glee and in your face laughing.
  • I'm thankful she hasn't won any comps. I don't advocate violence, but it would be nice to throw her in the pool or something.
  • Jeff put a glass of water atop the green room door.
  • Natalie caught on, but accused Michele of doing it ... saying she saw her.
  • From then on, the night was full of pranks. Saran Wrap across the toilet, etc.
  • Natalie told Michele that she won't be voting for Jeff to stay and all of her deals with Kevin end tomorrow with the final four.
  • She wants Michele to team up with her to get rid of Kevin this week.
  • Yeah, right.
  • She kept pushing Michele to go into a deal with her.
  • Michele nodded and mumbled a lot, but gave her no commitment.
  • Jeff and Jordan cuddled a lot in bed for his (or her) last night.
  • No, the deed did not go down.

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Through Wednesday 9/02

Just a word of warning -- tomorrow night's live eviction show is going to be delayed in several viewing areas on the East Coast. I know in my particular area (WCBS Channel 2 out of Manhattan, NY), the show will air after the Jets game. Supposedly that will be around 10 PM ET. If you know there is a delay in your area, please feel free to post the schedule changes with the area and station information. I'll probably put up a show blog party post at 8 PM ET, but I have no clue who will actually have the show at that time ... including East Coast feeds sites.

In today's house of fools news:
  • Natalie is having cramps. Oh, poor Natalie. She MUST have a heating pad, BB. And I'm talking NOW.
  • Could it be a ploy to cover if it's a physical challenge for HoH?
  • Jeff and Michele worked on Natalie, assuring her that if Jeff is kept, they'll go after Kevin next week.
  • They also told her she could win HOH.
  • What world are they living in?
  • Natalie told Jeff he's safe.
  • I don't believe her.
  • Jeff shouldn't believe her, either.
  • Jeff and Michele would like to be the final two.
  • I'd like a new large flat screen television. My chances are as good as theirs.
  • Michele told Jordan and Jeff that Kevin's plan all along was to get rid of Jeff.
  • Jordan said that if she stays, she'll try her hardest to win and might do better with the distraction of Jeff being around.
  • Hmmm ... I'm not sure that will make her strong.
  • Jordan told Michele that Natalie told her that if Michele won PoV, she'd be coming after her.
  • Kevin got his HoH camera. They're still looking for the perfect shots in new poses each week.
  • Natalie told Kevin she's going to ask Jeff for his Hawaii trip to vote for him to stay, but then she won't vote for him.
  • Jeff and Jordan packed.
  • Natalie wishes the house stocked TV dinners. Kevin told her that was "so ghetto."
  • I say, but even Natalie can cook one!
  • Jeff has been the culinary expert chef of the season.
  • Natalie told Jordan that Jeff and Michele have both been coming to her with all kinds of ideas to keep Jeff in the game.
  • Jordan was surprised that she said "both" of them.
  • Natalie assured Jordan that Jeff won't be staying.
  • So the spool of lies continues.
  • I think Jeff is a goner tomorrow night.

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Overnight Into Wednesday 9/02

Jordan doesn't seem to care for Jeff bouncing the badminton racquet off the top of her head.

Once again, there's not too much to report here. Here goes nothing (and I mean NOTHING!):
  • BB refused to give them alcohol even though they know they can't have any Wednesday night, the night before the live show.
  • That didn't stop our "minor" Natalie from imbibing.
  • She drank four bottles of Kevin's Mike's Hard Lemonade.
  • While Jeff made a remark about her age, no one pressed the issue.
  • Seriously, hamsters ... if she's only 18, the production staff could not let her drink. Think about it and stop believing her lie!
  • They played cards.
  • Sigh. I hate watching them play cards.
  • I prefer the show buying them dollar store arts and crafts.
  • Jeff told Jordan that if she wants to win, she should stick with Michele over Natalie.
  • Michele and Kevin had a long talk over jury votes. She's still trying to get him to turn on Natalie.
  • I think if Kevin's a smart player, he'll try to get someone else to do the dirty work to get Natalie out next week.
  • No one could beat her with the jury. Yet if he is responsible for the boot, she could turn the jury against him.
  • Natalie told Jordan that she will be voting for her to stay and, if there is a tie, Kevin will keep her.
  • Natalie was obnoxious to Kevin in her drunken overacting. I hope he picks up on this.
  • They all went to bed early.
  • They probably put each other to sleep by being so boring! Nah ... they seemed to have fun a lot of the night, but I prefer action.
  • I leave you with a drunken Natalie. I know. I have a mean streak in me.

Big Brother 11 Through the Day Tuesday 9/01

Earlier today Jordan and Michele spent time race-walking laps around the yard.

While Natalie slept.

But as the evening came on, the houseguests split into pairs and Michele is once again the lone wolf.

Here are the happenings from inside that Big Brother House of Schemin' Demons:
  • I'm sure you noticed that I'm only doing a dawn and night report today, not three reports.
  • That's because this bunch isn't doing ANYTHING!
  • I'm tempted to just post screen caps of them laying about.
  • Well, Natalie could be lying about.
  • ;-)
  • Jordan didn't feel too well this morning. I'm thinking it could be a mix of stress and the wine BB is feeding them at night.
  • Kevin wants to tell Michele that Natalie's acting strange and see if she falls for the bait.
  • Kevin and Natalie talked more about hiding things to make the others think BB was messing with them.
  • They fixed the kitchen sink so it would squirt.
  • It got Jeff. He said they should learn to do the dishes instead of playing pranks.
  • Kevin and Natalie are experimenting cooking on the grill.
  • They can smell the wild fires in the distance and apparently the sky is affected, too. The moon is red. But the main thing I'm picking up on the feeds are a lot more sirens.
  • Natalie plans to drink all of Kevin's Mike's Hard Lemonade tonight.
  • BB should play along with her plan and penalize her for underage drinking.
  • The one season they actually had a 19-year-old on the show, she wasn't allowed to drink at all.
  • That's all I have for you. Someone go poke these folks with a cattle prod, please.

Big Brother 11 Tuesday Show Blog Party Post 9/01

Big Brother 11 Blog Logo

The show has started here on the East Coast. This post will be updated with the major events as it airs, but the real fun is in the comments section. Everyone is welcome, bring your own snacks and beverages! Later tonight my show review will be posted on TV Squad.

Kevin got the Pandora's Box Mystery Door clue. He chose to stick his hand in the box to release $10,000, screamed, then commercial. As the others collected money, Kevin was ignored with his hand stuck in the box. Jeff finally released him with the key he found. They each collected cash from the yard

Michele wins POV. She saved herself and Kevin put Jordan in her place.

Big Brother 11 Live Feeds Into Tuesday Dawn 9/01

Natalie plays solitaire as the rest of the house sleeps. I know I've been anti-Natalie throughout the season, but I can't help it. I realize a lot of it is because I don't like how she's been playing the game -- glomming off power players. But there's something else:
  • She's mean. Yep, you heard me.
  • Her latest scheme is to rattle Michele so that she won't do well in the HOH comp -- sabotage her emotionally.
  • She laughs when Michele cries and knows that Michele has been struggling with her emotions.
  • Natalie is a bully.
  • She also wants Kevin to be mean.
  • She wants him to lead Jeff on during Thursday night, then evict him.
