'Lost' Season Three Premiere

lostmap
Tonight was the night - the eagerly anticipated season premiere of Lost.

And now, I think I'm more lost than I ever was before. No polar bears, no dark wisps of smoke, and a focus on only those held captive by the Others (Jack, Kate, and Sawyer) with no other folks other than the Others and flashbacks to Jack's father and wife.

The show opened in a very un-Lost-like state. It could have been Nebraska on a lazy Sunday afternoon. But, these weren't your normal Pleasant Valley Sunday friendly neighbors. No, they were the Others! They have normal homes, a normal-looking rural sort of neighborhood. A woman chose to play a CD with Petula Clark's song "Downtown." (What's it all mean?) And, they were holding a fairly normal activity -- a meeting of a book club. The book club leader, addressed as Julie by another, defended the choice saying, "This is my favorite book!" An older man thought the book literary trash. "It's by-the-numbers religious hokum-pokum."

The book in question? Stephen King's Carrie, in hardcover. I had to freeze-frame my tape, see that its title was short and began with a "C," then look for covers online as it doesn't match my own original paperback of the book from 1973. But, that's what it was, for sure... a hardcover edition released in 1974, of Carrie. What's the significance of the book? Well, I don't know. I figure it must have some meaning or they wouldn't have shown a traceable book cover. Of course, Carrie was the outcast girl who wreaked havoc on her high school.
Sawyer
The Others, Henry, in particular, look a lot younger than they did in previous episodes. His hair is a healthy dark brown and there aren't the deep lines in his face. Oh. And, Henry's name is Ben. The woman running the book club made a comment about being foolish enough to "pick a book Ben wouldn't like." So, Henry/Ben has some power. The book club meeting was interrupted by what looked like an earthquake, but was the magnetic forces which caused Oceanic Flight 815 to crash. All of the Others, who seem like normal ol' people, ran out and watched it split into three parts falling over the island.

Ben assigned Ethan (remember him?) to join the survivors (if any) of the fuselage crash site and to be one of them. "You were on the plane," he said. He told him to listen, learn, and not get caught; he wants lists in three days. Others were assigned to find the other two parts of the plane.
Kate
"So, I guess I'm out of the book club."

Then it cuts to "present day" and Jack, Kate, and Sawyer are each held captive in separate areas. Sawyer is in what is later revealed to be a bear cage complete with a tricky way to obtain a fish biscuit and water. An older teenaged boy is in an adjacent cage. The teen warned Sawyer not to play with a button and Sawyer being Sawyer just had to play with it... and got blown across the cage. Later, the boy would help Sawyer escape. Don't get excited, his escape didn't last long. He was tasered and brought back to the bear cage.

Kate's scene begins in a shower room similar to ones in gyms. Hey, wait! The public shower played a part in Carrie! Nope, no dirty pillows. An older man we previously knew as Zeke attended to Kate and gave her a towel, soap, shampoo, and a dress to put on afterwards. She feared he would leer, but he told her that she wasn't his type. Don't ask. I don't know what his type would be. All dressed up and no place to go? Nope, she had a date with Henry. Ben. Whatever. A breakfast by the sea, accompanied with a warning from Ben. "The next couple of weeks are going to be very unpleasant."
Jack
What's up with Jack? Well, he's in what's revealed later to be an undersea, but dry, dolphin pool. Book Club Julie, who introduces herself to Jack as Juliet, is his watchman. He tried to escape, too. Juliet told him that his dehydration will eventually cause hallucinations and we went through a series of flashbacks. Scenes of his wife with another man (no, get your minds out of the gutter) and his father ran on and off through the show. His obsession with finding out his wife's lover even took a turn at accusing his father, cracking up, getting busted, and generally going berserk. Odd.

When he attacked Juliet and tried to escape, Ben/Henry warned him that if he opened a door, they'd all die. He went ahead and opened it. Nope, they didn't die! But water rushed in and that's when he figured they were under the sea. Juliet calmed him with a file which she claimed was "his life." She told him several facts about his background and told him Sarah (his ex-wife) was happy.
Juliet
Meanwhile, after breakfast Kate was put in an adjacent bear cage to Sawyer. He shared a fish biscuit with "Freckles."

Tonight's episode is on the ABC website if you missed it. But, now we have a bunch of new mysteries and no answers.
  • Why was Julie/Juliet crying as she listened to "Downtown"?
  • What is the significance of the Carrie novel, if any? How did they get several copies of it?
  • How did they get vehicles? How come their houses are stocked with food and have electricity? Where did this stuff all come from?
  • Those bear cages are pretty big. Could one have been the domicile of a certain gigantic polar bear from the first season?
  • Bear cages and dolphin pools? How do they work in with DHARMA? Or the Hanso Foundation?
  • How long have these people been on the island? Many are childbearing age. We know they've stolen children. Why are there no children?

The only thing I really learned tonight was that Ethan was indeed an Other and assigned to blend in with the survivors. That and the fact that Jack acted like a real jerk about his wife's marital fling. No, I'm not suggesting he just accept it, but he went over the edge.

Oh, heck. I'm Lost.

I'm lost, too. LOL This is my first season watching Lost. Maybe I should forget about what happened last season and start with this new one or I will be lost beyond hope. I actually printed out your first Lost blog so I wouldn't be lost. ;)

In 5 seconds, how many times did I use the word "lost" in my comments?
Guess it's bewitching time and I need to get some sleep.

Thanks for all the recaps, Jackie.

Zoe -- Another Jackie fan turned me on to http://www.filmfodder.com/tv/lost/. This guy (Mac) has been recapping since the first episode. I'm still getting caught up, but he's really easy to follow. Hope it helps!

I've come to the realization that I could go crazy trying to figure everything with Lost out, so I just watch and enjoy. If something doesn't make sense, I just file it away for later.

I do have to say I really missed Sawyer. I think he's totally hot. I guess I'm just a sucker for a bad boy with a southern drawl :)

All I can say is HUH!!! Will not use the L word.!!! Hate it when they say your questions will be answered and all that generates are more questions. Like you will find out who the "others" are, but basically, we find out they live in houses, have plumbing, attend bookclubs, a locker room, bottled water and on and on!!!! Why the zoo? Has anyone wondered why in all that time the Oceanic folks did not explore the whole island! OK, there were some nasties out there, but I am sure most would have explored. Sayid did some, and it seems they did hit parts of it, I know I know part of story! I see this is rambling, but my brain is searching for clues and whatever. Thanks for the recap Jackie!!

Ben...Bear...Big Ben? Is it possible they may be shapeshifters (that's a word I learned from Charmed...it means they can change into something other than human). Nah! probably not...

Well, so far I love it. I just need them to get out of the cages and see some action. Next week!

Anybody else watch Criminal Minds. Gray's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Lost.and Ghoast Whisperer.. great shows, and in that order.

The Nine was pretty good last night too. I think it's a keeper as well.

Later... off to work.

Orkmommy, so you like bad southern boys????? Is Brazil in that range? New member to the show Rodrigo Santore...saw his pic in filmfodder. Can I saw CALIENTE. Wonder how he will fit in and with who?

Now,I am obsessing on one comment made by Julie/Juliette to one of Jack's questions. He asked if they were part of/from the Dharma project and she answered...that was a long time ago! Now does that mean they are the decendants of the original group? Did they go forth and multiply? And why, again,do they steal children or was it just Walt???? Also, how do they have all this info on all the survivors??? They have to be connected to the outside world somehow. The bottled water and books and such suggest a pipeline to the outside world!! You just don't "home grow" those kind of things.
Now,Jack was kind of a "froot loop" when it came to his wife,no?? Doesn't inspire much confidence in your surgeon, does it?Does it have to do with that "God complex" they claim surgeons have or has he just got an addictive personality?Questions, nothing but questions.......YIKES!!! It does kind of answer the reason Jack felt so conflicted and guilty about his Dad,if his over reaction caused him to leap off the wagon and end up in Australia...and dead!

I really liked the NINE. Again,so many unanswered questions and you can bet I will be there to find them all out.The fact that the gunmen didn't die in the shoot out makes it all the more interesting. What a piece of work Egan's wife is...I can see why he wanted to commit suicide......LOL!

Sharon,
No other children were taken like on the first few nights after the crash...I think it was a boy and a girl.

Lyss,
I am with ya there...lots of guesses out there but no answers. Just have to watch.

Jackie...first, I just had to give you a big THANKS for all the information you blogged for Big Brother...I couldn't wait to read your daily blogs...and now I read your blog for Survivor, Amazing Race and now Lost. You have a gift for writing!! I've also glanced through your section with photos in New York...what a treat for someone from South Carolina!

Thanks ever so much!

Well I just gotta say, thank heaven for Survivor, cause this LOST premiere had my head spinning (or was that the vicodin I took for my hip?) anyway.....I totally agree with Orkmommy that I missed Sawyer...I saw him on the cover of TV guide..the lady behind me was buying it, she was trying to justify it to her friend "I need to know...blah blah" and I just lened over and said "face it, its the cover right?" she cracked up and her friend said "oh my so easy on the eyes"....yep thats the reason I watch Lost too!!

I think the book "Carrie" was really more of a shout out to Stephen King. He's a big fan of the show and I think he even wrote about Lost for Entertainment Weekly.
I really liked last night's episode. It of course raises more questions. But, that's why I like this show so much - the mystery of it all! I like how they reveal things bit by bit. Like I'm sure we are going to see in a future episode what happened to Kate between the time she was on the beach with Benry and when she was put in the cage by Sawyer. Something happened - did you see her poor wrists?!? And next week we get to see the rest of the Losties and hopefully find something out about the consequences of not pushing the button.

Look what I found...BOO HISS

This season opener was the first of six new weekly episodes that
will air before ``Lost'' takes a hiatus until February, when it
will continue without a break through May.

Why oh why????

MEB guessed the code to the puzzle, I think.

But first let me ask, Jackie et al.: do you follow in the rest of the Lost-viewing puzzle-solving out there? I don't. If I had time I probably would. I hear it's very very involved and ... obsessed. One reason I ask is because I don't know what kind of guesses are out there as to the mechanics of the island. So if my guess here has been treated before I wouldn't have a clue. Another reason is that I like generally the middle-ground in viewing Lost (not in life). Similar to what ORKMOMMY said, I make a first degree attempt to figure stuff out, and what I can't, I shelve for later.

Personally I would rather watch strict survival stuff, I'm a sucker for anything involving that. I prefer the more reality-weighted stuff if I can't get the pure thing. (I liked the show Firefly a lot.) I'm getting to the Sci-Fi aspect. I enjoy that there is a sci-fi aspect to Lost. This guess of MEB/mine would increase the sci-fi prominence quite a bit. But might it not be destined for that degree of sci-fi anyways? ... to answer the many questions ... to fill the story out.

Ok, so with that disclaimer/preface, check this out. The animals and the Others are linked somehow. What if the Others *are* the animals, or vice versa, whether by shape-shifting or lab-induced evolutionary stuff.

It all can tie together in this guess. The Others were/are animals. One of the Others told one of the Losties that they're always watching them (or something like that). They could watch them by shape-shifting. Think of the black horse, the polar bear. The pirates who stole Walt were probably looking for them in the first place. And the shark had a DHARMA insignia on it.
(I learned this from the DVD. I saw the first two seasons on DVD and am now going to watch S3 in "real"-time.)
So, maybe Benry is Big Ben or a lion, king of the Jungle. This would explain some inherent reverence beyond ostensible power that the Others have among each other.
The black smoke? I don't know. Maybe Benry is the black smoke. I don't like the black smoke because that is the most unrealistic sci-fi part of any explanation, even (to me) more than the happenstance of everyone of the Losties being "Lost" at home in their flashbacks too *and* then all having common personal connections ... which itself actually reflects the symbiosis or one of the main evolutionary thrusts of the puzzle. Hey, the smoke could be that puzzle piece that has to do with the chemistry of the island, the chemistry that ties together the evolution of the Others and the healing of the Losties, ultimately being some esoteric power that will kill too... kill: I don't have it all figured out. Ah-ha, survival of the fittest: This is why some on the Lists were chosen, and maybe especially why kids were taken. Jack's life file: well, of course, along these lines of surmise, (and since the sci-fi can go to whatever degree JJAbrams wants/needs it to go), one of the animals (or the black smoke chemistry) could be a mind-reader. It's all yer non-basic variety evolutionary sci-fi. Pretty cool, ay!?

Contact with the outside world? I don't know, except in S2 we know that someone was trying to find the magneticism of the island. Wait, I do have a guess on that. The dirty guys who captured Walt. They could be like pirates and get stuff from passing ships or what-have-you. There's probably a limit to how far they could go, since the magnetism keeps them close: same magnetism that heals quickly and messes with compasses.

Again, I never thought I'd get into the nitty-gritty of the puzzle but when MEB posted that something clicked in me wee-little heead.

Freckles isn't Zeke's "type", because Zeke is an animal, literally.
Have a quandry about the show? Put it in my handy-dandy solution-scheme of genetics and sci-fi evolution and you'll have yourself a great little answer! And if my scheme isn't *the* scheme then, well, maybe it should be, cuz it's a good one... espousing toward JJ caliber.

Anonymous said...

Wow...more food for digesting! Quistan. My thought on the black smoke after seeing the village (?), zoo, etc...would be some type of power plant turned on to generate power and energy would be stored somewhere to use later, that would cause smoke of some sort. Far out isn't? I guess all we can do is guess.

Now's as good a time as any to put in a side comment about E/evolution. I'm a Christian. That probably strikes up immediate ideas for you but let me esplain... it is too much, let me sum-up (Inigo Metoya, The Princess Bride). Evolution (upper-case "E") is false... or "just a theory". Evolution (lower-case "e") is conceptually supported by evidence. The crux is that evolution only brings out variety: real evolution might be similar to Darwin's "variety". E.g. wolves and dogs probably branched-off from each other. It was compacted in the genes. But you never see (evidence of especially) a frog turning into an elephant. That would be false Darwin stuff. Well, I'm already explaining more than summing-up. I could expalin the whole thing pretty much. But suffice to say that Evolution is also called macro-evolution and is false, whereas evolution is also called micro-evolution and occurs. God created animals within their "kinds". "Kinds" is more general than "speicies" or "genus" and might allign more to the "family" category. And therefore *true* (micro-)evolution remains within the Biblical model.

So, I like some Sci-Fi, but I just want to make clear that it's to me just Sci-Fi. Evolution (the commonly understood *theory*) is Science-Fiction. Thanks for your support.

Anonymous said...

The healing linkage might go like this: the magnetism is a factor to the smoke and the evolutionary acceleration, and the smoke (or some other medium) is a factor to the accelerated healing.

Anonymous said...

Furthermore, this same medium (plausibly the smoke) could be the factor to other stuff, like the halucinations and the "halucinations", even to the essence/source of all coincidences.

Ok, I'm going to stop now, I think. I like my proposed scheme/model. Instead of surmising upon every detail which could be fun, could happen ad noseum. I'll just mostly let the rest of the season(s) "bear" it out.
:)

Anonymous said...

I can't stop. I have the fever for the flavor.

Julie said "that was long time ago... *we are what we are*". This animal thing is *so* right.
Ethan and the other guy ran into the forest. They are on the complete opposite side of the front-planers, of a big island. They're going to run a marathon and get there right away?? No, they're animals. Ethan and the other guy, particularly probably a black horse and another horse (or what-have-you).

Anonymous said...

I can't remember if Ethan was killed or got away. Either way, he could have been a horse and there could be more than one horse, of course of course.

Anonymous said...

Previously on Lost, the cop (forgot her name) says "...and they're animals". The whole thing *is* chalk full of intricacies and enigma.
Julie said "...that free will still exists"... it's all so very very interesting. I can't believe it, I'm totally hooked into full Lost geekdom.

Anonymous said...

quistian, at first I thought you were crazy, the "animals" theory, but the more I think about it, it seems kind of possible. Dharma had a zoological study going on, and maybe they did find a way to transform themselves. Everything means something on this show, and your point about Ana Lucia (the cop) saying they were animals is what made me think twice.
Interesting, very interesting...

Anonymous said...

again, to quistian: Ethan was killed. And "the dirty guys who captured Walt" were the Others. Zeke was one of them.

this is driving me crazy.............didn't we see Juliet at the end of last season?

Anonymous said...

I have more to say. I'm going to watch it again before I do. I did know the dirty guys were the Others. I did forget Zeke was one of them, but that was irrelevant to my point of the dirty guys going after the island-escapers.
Hey, I just thought of something on-top of something I was going to say. I was going to say that the only thing that gives me pause in my theory is that Zeke told Sawyer "It only took the bears two hours." Holding tightly to my theory, Zeke was not a bear. It might give me more pause except that since Zeke was out on a boat and there was also a shark, who in my theory would potentially be an Other, I'm sure the dynamics are a mixture. Like some can shape-shift and some not. The one group probably dominates the other. The one group tries to incorporate the other... or others that it captures like kids etc. ... giving them injections or what-have-you {think her baby in the womb; I forget names easily}.

The actual dynamics of who co-relates to an animal is probably mixed, as the rest of the story is so mixed with causes and motifs. On this point, it is presently fun to imagine the possiblities of how some group went from "long ago" to "we are what we are". Cloning is topically controversial for a TV audience. The genetic/evolutionary thing could consist of cloning. What ever it is my guess is that it is somehow dual, or at least two-pronged... and probably dually two-pronged knowing how intricate this show can get. Let me see if I can think of a plausible example. I'll get back to you after I see the show again.

I admit my scheme theory is not full by any means, but it has some main linkages and some main structures... developing. Basically, I might say, to the Lost puzzle, I have three corner pieces placed and up to three edges placed. The last corner and edge is the link to the outside world.
I bet this season is about animals. Not that that is a super-smart guess or anything. I bet they hold of on the link to the outside world *at least* until next season, *at least*. I admit my theory isn't so special since I didn't create the spark, MEB did. Yet it's quite fantastic to me. What would be super fantastic would be for someone to fit the outside-world-link corner piece before it comes out in the show (since animals were eluded to in the first episode this season).

I thought Julliet looked fimaliar too. Can't remember anything though.

Anonymous said...

animals were alluded to {more strongly}, {more centrally}

Anonymous said...

Thanks Jackie - for all you do....by the way "The Stand" is my all time favorite book in the world. I just reread it again this summer.

Anonymous said...

Dually two-prongged.
Something like the experiment found out how to transform animals and wanted to extend it into cloning or something else; and more people are needed to either cure or progress. Since they're always trying to gather information it seems like whatever the situation they are stuck on the island and want to progress in something... genetic or simply getting off the island.
But this is so speculative, it's beyond theory.

Anonymous said...

What does SK stand for? ...Oh, Stephen King, must be.

The man contesting Julliet (neither Julia nor Julie) is Adam, not Alan. Maybe I'm getting better at names.:)
If genetics are involved maybe the host of the book club is the "host" of the genetic issue, and therefore 2nd in command of the Others, to Ben. And an Adam would come in handy, since Adam was the first one created. We know there is something to be known about injections.

I'm sure there will be more hints at the links to the outside world this season. Like Jackie questioned, Julliet must have ties to the outside world, "downtown".

Ben sent Goodwin and Ethan to the back and front parts of the plane, respectively. Didn't Goodwin arrive sooner to the back section than Ethan arrived to the front. Goodwin showed up during or at the end of the beach trauma. Ethan wasn't recognized until when? The next day?? Maybe they could've run as humans. Ben said it would take Goodwin an hour to run to the (back section) site. It's TV so it's hard to judge how accurate TV will be to reality, but that sure seems like a stretch to me. A man on a road can run 5 miles in an hour. There was some beach and it's hard to judge how far away it was. It is dubiously five miles. Maybe.
If they remained humans as they ran their respective distances, it stretches the bounds of ability... the way I see it.

Jackie says the plane split into three parts. Does that middle part really look like much? To me it looked mostly just like an extra piece. The front section was pretty long. I think it would be a stretch to expect a third group of Losties. Of course, anything could happen.

Refining/correcting myself, Julliet said, "...it only matters who we are". They're not the same whoever/whatever they are.

Anonymous said...

"This is *our* island."
The Others don't want, as a goal per se in their community, to get off the island, especialy considering hints from the other seasons. But they want information. Julliet might want off. Julliet might have sympathy and join/help the Losties. Hence, Ben's concern. Ben's concern goes beyond the immediate rift between them.

If they do want to, they can't, ... so we'll see Michael again. I don't like Michael, nor the actor playing him. He's so chaotic, I want to slap him.
(Just TV-land talk. I'm a man so I'd proably deck him, but decking him would make him stupidly spiteful again. A good slap would humiliate him; he needs to be more humble.)
I do need a 12-step program.

animals animals animals

i think it's important to mention jack found he's ex's number on his dad's cellphone. jack was following his father who he thought his father was having an afair with his wife. his father actually was going to some kind of support group. the facilator had told jack his dad had been sober for 50 days that nite. jack started getting cocky back.

with kate at the beach henry said something about wanting her to see the water to find comfort in knowing her friends saw the same ocean, the dress so she looks like a lady. i forget the third think, but he also said he wanted her to have pleasant meomories as the next two weeks would be very difficult.

I think that when they captured Jack,Kate, and Sawyer that they used their primary weakness against them. Jack weakness being women, taking away Kate's toughness and independence, and Sawyer's lifestyle of not being controlled or held down.
