'The Amazing Race 11: All Stars' - Ep. 5 -or- "We didn't come here to be sissyfoots."

Each week I'm reminded why I like Oswald and Danny so much. Even when they bicker a bit (like they did tonight), they can be a hoot and deliver some of the best lines in the show.

On the other hand, every week I'm reminded more and more why Charla and Mirna irk me so. In my book, Mirna is more irksome than Charla. I honestly think I'd take to Charla much better if she had a different partner.

Seven teams remain. Who will be eliminated next?

The teams started out from their last Pit Stop at the "End of the World." This is the closest we've seen the race actually get to Antartica, which is kind of cool in and of itself. Heck, not cool... outright cold! Teri and Ian were shocked that Romber was eliminated while Mirna seemed to take credit for the elimination. Oswald and Danny, the first team to arrive, left first at 12:02 AM. In last place, Charla and Mirna left at 2:41 AM, almost a three-hour gap betwixt first and last. Will it matter? Of course not. It's the Amazing Race!

While Team Guido (Joe and Bill) promised they were going to show a "kinder and gentler Guido," we see them provoked later on in the leg. The teams had to travel to a glacier where they received one avalanche beacon and were directed to follow the signal to find a buried beacon with their next clue. It all started out with an 8 AM opening, thus a bunching point.

The more I see Eric, the more he irks me, too. Perhaps he should team up with Mirna. He deliberately tried to annoy the Guidos and seems to have some problems with both gay and older folks on the whole. The Guidos walked away refusing to let him instigate problems which may make them look bad.
Oswald and Danny Rule
Once the gates to the glacier were opened, some teams zoomed right through the task. Others had issues. For example, once again Dustin and Kandice blew by a clue. But they caught themselves this time and went back before losing too much time. Charla/Mirna took a long time, but Danny and Oswald took forever. The ChaChas also took turns being cranky about it.

After completing the glacier task, teams had to fly 7,000 miles to the town of Maputo in Mozambique. Any plane tickets have to be purchased through travel agents as the airport can't sell them. The show has back-up tickets which would get them in at 3 PM if teams cannot obtain earlier flights. But all the teams, including the lagging ChaChas, managed to get on the same flight and their arrival time was 9:40 AM.
Amazing Race Roadblock: Trained Rat
Once in Maputo, the teams had to get in marked cars with drivers and head to APOPO Training Field. Again, there was a bunching point and Eric called the Guidos "freaks." It was there that they faced a Roadblock (a task only one member of a team can do) and one of the coolest ones I've ever seen. Rats! Oh, I'm not talking the rats running around KFC/Taco Bell in the Village. I'm talking working rats. These rats have been trained to detect explosive landmines and work with trainers. It's fascinating to read about and gives us a whole new insight of a much-detested animal. Well, I never detested them. I just don't want them in my abode... or where I eat. Pet rats have always been okay with me.

Not only did I think the challenge was fun and really interesting, but Charla's rat was more interested in grooming for the cameras than finding the landmine/clue. The name of the Roadblock was "Who Smells a Rat?" I couldn't help but compare Mirna to them each time they showed her. During the task, one of the ChaChas promised their rat, Nelson, that if he finds the clue, "We'll take you to a nice lab where they'll apply make-up on you." Ian gave his Cagney impersonation, "You dirty rat."
Maputo Confusion
Once the rats did their thing for the teams, they had to travel 50 miles back into Maputo, but it wasn't as easy to get to the location as they thought. The road sign must have loved the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. "Some people go this way, and others go this way." The road sign indicated Maputo was either to the left or straight ahead. The teams going straight ended up lost. Or, was it the teams who went left who got lost? All I can say was one way was better than the other and shifted the dynamics of who was leading the pack.

Once they finally got to the next clue, it was a Detour. Both choices were ways folks make a living in the area. In Pamper It, the teams had to go to a market stall where they had to sell nail-painting to locals. Men in the area both do the painting and have their nails painted. Once they earned a certain amount, they would receive their next clue. In Porter It, teams had to load ten bags with coal, sew them shut, then lug a single bag by foot to a location in town.
Free Nails to a Cute Girl
The Guidos were running in first place at the time and chose Porter. Hey, Eric can say what he may, but there are two male gay teams in the race. Both chose the physical task of Porter It. Alas, they should have chosen Pamper It. Mirna and Charla, way behind the other teams, finished that one in short order. So did the Beauty Queens (Dustin and Kandice), who even took the time to paint a young girl's nails even though she had no money. Geez, Ian and Teri were headed to Porter, but accidentally ended up in Pamper and they nailed the task, too! (Get it? Nailed the nail task. I kill myself sometimes.)

Ahem.

But all the teams faced with the Porter task found it dirty, time-consuming, and probably the wrong choice. Uchenna and Joyce fell way behind as they got lost while lugging the bag of coal around.

Here's the order at the Pit Stop in Fortaleza, Maputo:
  1. Charla and Mirna - Their first time (and hopefully last time) in first place ever on the show. They won a trip to Aruba.
  2. Dustin and Kandice
  3. Teri and Ian (who were shocked they did so well)
  4. Oswald and Danny - Oswald promptly chased Phil around wanting to hug him with his coal-covered hands. That was a hoot! When Phil commented about them taking the coal task, one of them said, "Hey, we didn't come here to sissyfoot!" (Ah, but I bet they will shop again sometime!)
  5. Joe and Bill - They beat Eric and Danielle in a close footrace which prompted Eric to blame Danielle and later fuss that they were "beat by a bunch of queens." You go, Queens!
  6. Eric and Danielle
  7. Uchenna and Joyce
As it was one of the three planned non-elimination legs, Uchenna and Joyce are still in the race. However, they are marked for elimination. They must come in first place on the next leg or suffer a thirty-minute penalty which theoretically could make them lose the race.

I still hold with wanting Charla and Mirna gone, but Eric is about on par with them. Danielle, I have nothing against. Well, other than the fact that she's running the race with Eric. I'm liking the Guidos and ChaChas more each week and have to say the same for Teri and Ian. Dustin and Kandice are a strong team in many ways, but this is the second time they've gone by a clue. They have to pay more attention. I liked Uchenna and Joyce in their season, but they are dragging a bit this season. I did smile at Joyce's reaction to the rat... "Oh, he's cute!"

Who are you cheering on?

I am rooting for the Cha Chas!! I am loving them more each week, and the whole chasing Phil thing was classic!!

Things that make me go hmmmm...

Why are Charla and Mirna still on the show?

Why, oh why, do Charla and, especially, Mirna talk in that insane and annoying voice / accent all the time?? Yikes.

Why is Eric becoming such a poor sport???

Hoping Uchenna and Joyce are able to stick around, and that Mirna / Charla are gone next week! They just get under my skin.

Talk about smelling a rat...when Romber came it last they were elimiated...when Joyce and Uchenna came in last it was non-elimination. Now isn't that convenient...just like planes that miraculaously return to the gate when they are in line for take off. Hmmmmm.

Anonymous said...

anonymous you say you smell a rat; in my opinion there is no rat with Joyce and Uchenna. Joyce and Uchenna won their season fairly - they have nothing to do with how the airport would accomodate a person which in this case it worked out for them. They still had to run the last leg after they landed along with Rob and Amber. They just beat Rob and Amber and that is all to it.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, the last leg which just happened to be in their hometown! Sheesh!

I could have gagged watching CHARLA/MIRNA in the confessional!!They talked as if they are soooo smart and all this was just business as usual. NOT...they just lucked into this.Like I said...even their RAT didn't work for them!! And for Mirna to take credit for ROMBER's ouster...she's got big ones...I'll say that for her. And the way she browbeat that poor man who was unlucky enough to stop and help them,it was funny, the way he kept trying to get away from her. What a good sport he was!! I also have to say, have to give props to Dustin(?) for giving the manicure to that little one...nice going!

I don't want JOYCE/UCHENNA to win just because they have already won once and I was disappointed they were even included in this race. It's only fair that somebody else win this time....and no more breaks for them!

GO CHA CHA's!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Cha Cha's for me....would be a hoot Guidos and Cha Cha's last 2 teams!!!! C/M can not leave fast enough for me. Rest I can take em or leave em. I think the "next" AR, a new rule needs to be made...no help from locals or cab to lead them to the next task. For me it takes away from the teams navigating to far-off places. Make em earn getting to the locations.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Delee. They shouldn't be allowed to elicit help from locals or cab drivers other than directions. It seems very unfair when some teams luck out with people willing to go with them directly to their destination, and others (more deserving, I think) have to find it on their own. It's more exciting and definitly more fair putting them all on the same playing field when they're all trying to get there on their own merits and wits.

Anonymous said...

I agree about the local help...I know it is "fair game" at this point, but someone like the beauty queens have a definite advantage over someone like the Guidos or the Cha Chas. It's more fun to watch people trying to navigate on their own...rather than being "led" to the spot. I'm for the Cha Cha's all the way and would love a Guido Cha Cha finish. Now that Myrna and Charla have won a prize maybe they can go home. Frankly, I hope Joyce and Uchenna don't come in first next week...they won already...give someone else a chance. The producers must really like them...no one gets an airline to recall a plane to the gate once it's in line for take off...that it was done so really gave them the race because Rob and Amber would have arrived at the end before Joyce and Uchenna even landed in their "home" town.

Anonymous said...

According to Mirna, it must have been a "Yield" on last week's show, because she took credit for ousting Rob & Amber. When in truth, Rob & Amber just made some bad mistakes and it cost them the race. I love how they try to come off great in their confessionals... Like last week when they claimed they never beleived Amber when she said "I got it", in truth, Amber(in a interview) said they(Charla & MIrna) spent 20 minutes down that wrong trail searching for that clue... Hmmmm...
Sounds like Mirna has a problem with accepting things for what they are... PLEASE let them go home next week!!!!

As for smelling a rat: I do find it odd how things happened with Rob & Amber... Maybe the show saw the way they dominated the show and offered them a lucrative way to bow out to give the show a good shake up. IF SO, little does the show know how much most people tuned in to mainly see them... Bad call....

I still like Joyce and Uchenna but since they have already won, I am going for the Cha Chas. I loved watching Phil getting chased around by Oswald!

I hope that Charla amd Mirna are eliminated next week. And I agree with the first comment-talking with the accents are annoying.

Hopefully if Charla and Mirna aren't eliminated, Eric and Danielle will be-what an ass.

I don't know if this is happening everywhere or just here but last week when Romber was reading their letter-the sound went really low here and you couldn't hear it and last night when Eric was confronting the Guidos the same thing happened. It is so damn annoying!

Anonymous said...

Wow, do I miss Rob and Amber! It just seemed like they couldn't do one thing right that day. If they were supposed to turn left, they turned right. They picked the much harder task and only had to correct their spelling on one word to advance. I was screaming at my TV, but alas to no avail. With Romber gone I'm now routing for Oswald/Danny and Uchenna/Joyce. U/J is going to have to step it up big town to stay in it next week.

RBennie.

P.S. - I need a Big Brother Fix!

Anonymous said...

RBennie...I'm with you...they showed that Big Brother blurb during TAR and all could think was ....bring it AWNNNNNN!!

Anonymous said...

Why does it matter if Uchenna and Joyce win again. Didn't Rob and Amber win a reality game show once already also.

Anonymous said...

Yes, and nobody brought a jet back from tarmac to help them do it!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Holy cow Jackie...I just did a Google search for "amazing race plane controversy" (so I could remember the plane thing) and your blog entry from 2/26 was the first hit! You're so popular :)

To all the Uchenna/Joyce haters. On their season, Rob & Amber almost missed a plane in Argentina. There was no jetway involved (they had to walk on the tarmac to get to the plane) but the gate door was closed and they opened it to let Rob & Amber on. The situation was no different from what happened to Joyce & Uchenna, except there was a jetway involved. The only reason people were so upset (and still are apparently) is because they wanted Rob & Amber win.

I say get over it and commence with the Mirna/Shmirna bashing!!

p.s. I'm totally rooting for the ChaCha's and Team Guido!!

Anonymous said...

Orkmommy, respectfully, I beg to differ. There's a huge difference between opening a gate at the end of a long hallway just after all the passengers have filed in and the jet is waiting for the okay to line the jet up on whichever runway they're told to go to and a jet that's already moved away from "the loading dock" and is on the jetway waiting its turn to take off. Do you think for one moment that if you or I (everyday people) begged or cried or anything else, would get any airline to do that for us? It's not that we're sore because Rob and Amber lost, it's that they were on that jet waiting to leave with a big lead and that plane was brought back for two people arriving late at the airport to take them to their hometown where they would have an obvious advantage. Whether you like Rob and Amber or not and whether you love Uchenna and Joyce or not, it was a very unfair advantage and a suspicious ending, seemingly obvious to make a more "exciting" end to the finale.

Anonymous said...

Sorry Jackie, but I love a good debate...

Anon 9:57 - Where did you see/read that the plane was in line to take off and they pulled it back? Everything I read said that they had only pulled the jetway back, but the plane was still at the terminal. Once the door is closed, the door is closed...it doesn't matter if the plane has a jetway or you walk across the tarmac to get to it.

I couldn't really care less to be honest. I just want Mirna/Shmirna to be gone!!

In 1983, I was flying with a friend from Albuquerque to Riverside, CA, to attend the US Festival, and we had a layover in Phoenix. Unaware that we needed to change terminals, we spent our layover drinking Bloody Marys in the bar, and were quite late for our flight. We were told to RUN (literally, RUN LIKE THE WIND!!) to our gate. The plane had already closed the door, but it was a small commuter, and they re-opened the plane, and lowered the stairs on the tarmac for us to board. It was completely embarrassing, and we were "shushed" by the flight attendants, with quite a few cat calls from other passengers, but we had tickets to a 3 DAY MUSIC FESTIVAL, and we were not going to be late! The other passengers were all asking who we were, as it appeared we were "important" for the airline to take those measures. Ha!! Just a couple of twenty-something girls on a lark!

Granted, this was way pre-9/11, and I doubt you could make this happen today on a commercial flight, but it really does depend on the mood of the airline reps you are working with. Sometimes they want to help, most times it is just easier for them to say "sorry"!

Orkmommy, I am totally with you! Let's get on with the bashing!!

There is a big difference between a small domestic hop from New Mexico to California and an international flight. I was a courier with a large number of crates containing paintings for an exhibition in the belly of a plane on a flight from JFK to Amsterdam. Also onboard was a courier from the Metropolitan Museum in NYC with her large shipment of paintings for a European exhibition. All the cargo was removed and the hold was searched because of a bomb scare and then reloaded. The Met courier had returned to the lounge and hadn't yet shown up when we were ready to depart. I tried, the freight forwarder from my museum and the freight forwarder from the Met tried to get the airline to hold the plane for her. No dice. The Met and my museum do a LOT of business with this carrier involving a lot of money. When I arrived in Amsterdam in the morning the freight forwarder/trucks awaiting the Met courier were disappointed to find that NO...airlines don't hold up take off on international flights and arrive later than necessary to "help out" tardy passengers. I have flown all over the world for 20 years and have never seen an international flight return to a gate. You can't get me to believe the network brass didn't intervene to recall the plane in order to have a photo finish rather than Rob and Amber flying off alone, with a the certainty of winning as they ambled to the finish line all by themselves.

Anonymous said...

I agree, how about the pilot who had two parents and a screaming child put off a domenstic flight recently because he said the delay caused by the child not allowing herself to be buckled in was causing a delay in take off which was inconveniencing all the other passengers who had paid for a timely flight. How many international carriers would delay 300 to 300 people to accommodate two late arrivals at a gate? Let's get real.

Honestly, who cares??

That season is long over. It is done. There have been no incidents with aircraft this season. Rob and Amber are gone. Joyce and Uchenna will probably be gone next week.

Let's all have some fun with what is happening in the here and now, and with the teams still involved in the race. Keep it light, keep it fun. This is a reality show on TV, after all!

Go, Cha Chas! Go home, Mirna!

I like Danny & Oswald, but my absolute favourite team is Teri & Ian. In fact Ian seems to have mellowed considerably since last we saw him in TAR3. Ian is about as competitive as Rob is but Teri is nowhere near as compliant as Amber is. I can't stand Mirna - she seems to have some sort of martyr complex where everyone is out to get her in particular. I also can't stand Eric, who is about as rude and crude as you can get. Danielle's introductory comments about him - that he's a gentleman(?!) - make me doubt her taste or sanity or both.

oh, oh, looks like another airplane controversy for next week - did anyone see the previews ? looks like erik & danielle get thrown off their plane, & danielle has a melt down !! I wonder what that's all about

mirna/chirna, it's time for them to go home, they are absolutely the most annoying people ever - i give them a 10 on the annoyance scale

I see a lot of comments about the smelling of a rat because Rob and Amber got eliminated what's up with that. If it had been any other team eliminated last week there would not have been a rat but because some people like Rob and Amber they feel everybody is against Rob and Amber. There is no rat. Every season they have non elimination rounds and it just happen to be this week. Where is the problem. As far as Joyce and Uchenna I do not see all these favors that are being commented on. They usually come in toward the back of the line. If they were getting all those favors I would think they would come in farther up the line. Joyce and Uchenna lives in Houston I never seen them come through Houston. As far as them winning before; so have Rob and Amber not on Amazing Race but on Survivor and they have a reality show so what is the difference they still have won a reality show. As far as I am concern they do not show Joyce and Uchenna that much to get all the negative comment they are getting. I smell a rat on this.
Rob and Amber is gone get over it. Rob was to cocky for me. Glad they gone

I'm one of the people who enjoyed Romber and enjoyed their escapades tobether...they were a good team...but I agree, they are gone and it's time to move on to the Cha Chas and the Guidos. Myrna and Charla..hope they leave next week...ditto Joyce and Uchenna...and Eric and Danielle. Loved seeing the Cha Chas chase Phil around even before they had checked in. I love their attitude and hope they go far this season. They too are fun to watch and let's face it...that's the purpose of the show...to entertain us. Whoever wins...I love the Amazing Race and hope it still has a few more years to go. Started Dancing with the Stars and the playeres this year don't seem as good as last out of the box...but time will tell.

Orkmommy and Dia: why don't you two get over the fact that you simply like U & J and will defend them blindly. Thank you Anon 3:23 for explaining how real-life airports do business. I love TAR but they love ratings and Rob and Amber flying alone to a sure win would have disappointed some fans (obviously) so they did what they had to do to give the show a more exciting ending. In real life Rob and Amber would have and should have won.

Anon 4:07 -- I don't like Uchenna/Joyce, I just like to debate. The truth is that none of us were there, we don't know what really happened, and it's in the past.

I think I'll start focusing my efforts on rooting for the ChaCha's and Team Guido, and bashing Mirna/Shmirna.

Anon 4:07:

If you would take the time to read what we are writing, you would see that none of us are even defending U & J, and the majority are rooting for the Cha Chas and against Mirna / Shmirna! Period.

I fly domestically and internationally, and log approximately 200K miles annually. I have seen INSANE things happen in airports, and with airline personnel. I have seen both domestic and international flights delayed and cancelled, and for many reasons that don't always make sense to the other passengers.

I only provided the anecdote from the Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix to get you to lighten up a bit! Editing can play a big part in the way events can appear on shows like TAR, Survivor, and BB.

(And the last I heard, Sky Harbor is a "real" international airport.)

Please remember, you are talking about ANCIENT history! This is not personal - This is a place for fans to meet up and discuss their favorite TV shows, favorite teams and players, and events. We won't always agree, and we can agree to disagree, but let's be respectful, and keep it FUN!!

Sweet dreams!! Tomorrow should be a better day for you! ;)

We are reading what you write. That's the problem. I give up. And if my tomorrow is as great as the day I had today, it will be a wonderful day too, thank you! I'm rooting for the Cha-chas and agree that Charla/Mirna Smirna need to go home. By the by, did anyone hear Jordin on American Idol sing "I WHO HAVE NOTHING"? Beautiful! Her version was better than Tom Jones's and Whitney Houstons. I.m rooting for this very talented 17-year-old.

I'm I the only one who like Mirna and Charla?
Do any of you remember Phil crying the last time they lost? ( maybe he knew something we didn't).
I love the guts it took for them to ask Amber why she lied.
I liked Rob and Amber too.. but laughing about decieving someone, and getting others to laugh at them was not cool.
If I ever need a lawyer I would want Mirna fighting for me. She sticks up for herself.
