'The Amazing Race 11: All Stars' - Season Finale

Well, the season is over and I have mixed feelings. I've never been too keen on "all star" seasons of reality shows and this season of The Amazing Race did nothing to change my opinion.

When the team announcements were originally released, I was a bit disappointed -- too many teams from the most recent season, one team which wasn't a team at all. After all, Danielle and Eric were originally on competing teams during their season. Oh, I know why they included them -- a TAR love story or whatnot. But there were enough other teams I enjoyed and, as always, I love the concept of the show.

I thought this season was a bit tamed-down in the challenges, too. There didn't seem to be as many risky challenges, although they certainly had more than the Family Edition (Season 8) year. Nonetheless, it was a great glimpse into countries I may never see and into other cultures. I can't call the season time wasted, not at all.

Tonight's finale was only an hour long which always seems too short for a big show event. And, tonight it also seemed they whipped through a couple of challenges, then it was time for the last Pit Stop. I found it to be a bit of a letdown in one of the more lackluster seasons of the show. Mind you, I enjoyed it overall. It's only lackluster when compared to the excitement and thrills of past seasons. Your mileage may vary.

Here's what happened on the finale leg:

The teams left from Guam with the Beauty Queens, Dustin and Kandice, starting at 11:53, Eric and Danielle leaving at 12:55, and Charla and Mirna last to leave at 1:29. It didn't really matter who left when, though, not in the long run.
Kandice and Dustin
They had to take a flight to Honolulu where they'd take a helicopter from Kamaka Air to Lanai to get their next clue. All three teams tried for the same flight, but Charla and Mirna found an earlier connecting flight putting them ahead of the other teams by about forty minutes.

The helicopters each could carry one team, first come first served. They left ten minutes apart. So, once again, lead time was narrowed down so no team was at a huge advantage. Once they received their clues, they drove to a harbor where they got the clue to the Detour.
Charla on the high seas
Teams could go Under or Over. In Under, they would have to dive into an underwater cave fighting the currents to get a clue tied to a rock. In Over, they had to "surf" on a paddleboard out to a buoy to get the next clue. Smartly, Charla and Mirna chose Over. This is the short of challenge where Charla's lower center of gravity is a huge bonus. Oh, not such a great challenge for Mirna, though. Eric/Danielle and Dustin/Kandice chose Under, with the girls having a rough time with it and falling behind.

From there, teams had to hike a mile to Shipwreck Beach to find their next clue. Eric and Danielle arrived there first and Charla and Mirna were last even though they originally were in the lead. Running across rocks, unlike the paddleboarding, isn't easy for Charla. After they made it to the beach, each team had to take an inflatable kayak and row (against currents) out to a shipwreck. Nearby the shipwreck was a buoy which contained their next clue.
Shipwreck
None of the teams are ever going to be Olympic-class rowers. But Eric and Danielle did the best, followed by Dustin and Kandice and then Charla and Mirna. All finally made it through, even though the Beauty Queens had a brief spat, then made up.

And, once again, all teams ended up on the same flight... this one to the final destination, San Francisco, California. Charla used her heelies in the airport once again -- too bad they don't work over rocks and on beaches!
Mirna and Charla
Then it was a slow cab race to the final clue leading them to the Old Mint. Now, I found the challenge faced there interesting and different, even though it wasn't daring and exciting. One member of each team had to answer questions about the previous teams while in a vault. They would enter the answers and ended up with a code. Then the other team member would come in and try to figure the answers their partner gave. When the answers matched, the code given would open a safe which contained the location of the finish line. It seems that Uchenna and Joyce seem to have attracted the most friends. Danielle, after several attempts, lined up the same answers as Eric. But Charla and Kandice (or was it Dustin?) both took the time limit and ended up being given the clue as they couldn't make all the matches.

The finish line was at the Botanical Gardens, with Phil and all of the previous teams, as we have grown to expect. Eric and Danielle made it there first, with the Beauty Queens not all that far behind. Then came Charla and Mirna.
Eric and Danielle - Won it All
Oh, well. I'm ready for a real show next season with all new teams for us to cheer on or boo! What did you think of this season? I don't think anyone I've seen commenting ever named Eric and Danielle as a favored team from the start, but maybe someone out there wanted them to win it all along. I only recently began to admire their determination after the two Yields. Although I don't care for Eric's personality, they seemed to work more like an actual team from that point on once the pressure really hit.

that 10min limit SUCKED....sorry but should have not been timed......meant the team in last had no chance of surpassing even team 2....
at the very least it should have been longer, or a new set of questions after 10mins....something at least

Well,as said before, they were never my choice to win. I also didn't like that it was a team that had never raced as a team before either. BUT after hearing Eric's former partner(how crass and disgusting was his mouth???)I am almost glad he changed partners.

Myself,I thought there were plenty of other teams I would have rather were in the race, thought Drew/??(drawing a blank) was a waste of a spot, they clearly were not fit to race again, and although I really,REALLY like Uchenna/Joyce,I thought it was wrong to have a previous winner when the rest were also-rans.

But,I am like you,Jackie, the main reason to watch is to see all these wonderful places they go and some of the shots and scenery is just out of this world. But I am ready to get back to plain ole people we have never seen before, and pick our new favorites and not so favorties. Thanks TAR for another season and no more "All Stars" for a long, long time.

I'm happy in the outcome, but I was really rooting for Mirna and Charla (as much as they bother me...) when they had that lead.

Good bye All-Stars!

Thanks Jackie for all the posts!

It came down to three teams that I couldnt stand and wouldnt you know it, the team I liked the least won it all! I was rooting for Charla and Mirna and the BQ's for completely different reasons and for either to be the first all woman team to win. It was very disappointing to see a team win that was so annoying and rude in both seasons they have been in... Once again, Im not happy w/ an end to a reality show. :( Oh well, can't wait for the new one to start...Anyone heard when yet????

Wish they'd make the last show a minimum of 90 minutes if not two hours. After all that traveling and all those competitions, the wrap up is a let down when it's squashed into 60 minutes. The weekly results show on Dancing with the Stars and American Idol are stretched beyond anyone's tolerance but AR compresses too much into the final episode and leaves us feeling dissatisfied. At least I felt it was too rushed for the last leg.

This confused me...the clue said San Fran, but at the airport E said to Oakland...big difference. The bay area has 3 major airports (OAK-SFO-SJC), so why did the clue say San Fran when really was Oakland? I know nit-picky. My team never wins so I go with the flow! IMAO

I too thought 10 minutes was not enough. Why the time limit-period? Like digging for something can take hours and hours, but something simple like this 10 minutes!!!!!!

The final leg used to be really good, more tasks and over 2 days. Now it seems like just get it over with. Remember the Alaska one when they arrived at night in frigid cold and stayed in a cabin? Continued on to the next week and did more in the ending city then hop a cab to the mat!!!

Oops, the 10 minutes at the Mint in SFO too. Was not a lot of running to the mat either? Concession to Charla? But SFO is a charming city and they could have raced more there. Like cable cars---Chinatown- etc etc.

The finale used to be a 2 hour show with the last 4 teams; one team being eliminated in the first hour and then the final 3 teams racing for the finish. (So basically just a combination of the last 2 shows that aired.)

Looked like the producers were trying to keep the racers close in the last few tasks to keep things exciting. But the 10 minute time limit at the Old Mint didn't work well. The teams had little chance of changing their order in that task. Which is why they edited the last few minutes in the taxis to look like the other 2 teams had a chance of passing E/D.

It would be nice if Eric watched the show, recognized his behavior, and made some changes. But I'm not hopeful.

Can't wait to meet the new teams next time! I'll be in Phil-withdrawal until then. Can't he host some other show in the meantime?

From the Early Show:

E/D said they were 5-10 mins ahead of K/D.

They won the last task because Danielle gossiped a lot about the other teams.

Eric said he thinks Danielle appreciated him being "rough" on her. Yeah.

They are not boyfriend/girlfriend anymore! They realized on the race it wasn't going to work. (They started fake bickering about how to split the $)

Kandice and Dustin are still best friends. Their argument on the last leg was not a big deal.

Mirna and Charla were happy to meet their fans along the way. Praised E/D for winning.

Phil said his daughter was rooting for the blonds, but the "bickering couple" won in the end.

Phil is traveling the country this summer looking for everyday heroes (for some TV special). Because Julie Chen was doing the interview, of course, she didn't ask for any relevant details. (Can't wait for Big Brother, Julie!)

Thanks Jackie for the link to explain TTOW. I have only begun watching TAR in the last 2 seasons, so I had no idea!

I don't get the big deal about the 10 minute limit. If the BQ's and C & M had paid more attention to each other, they might have gotten their answers to gibe quicker. They all had the same chance. Obviously Eric listened to all of Danielle's goossip. Give them a break, they won fair and square! Even Mirna said on The Early Show that they worked their butts off to win and they deserved it.

No surprise that Eric and Danielle are no longer together...clearly not a well matched couple despite Eric slobbering all over her at the finale saying what a great woman she was. Great yes, to help him win a million but not so great that he maintained a relationship. She's better off without him. He came across as extremely shallow and I doubt a million dollars will change that. The BQ's emerged as a strong team, good friends, and they really seemed to enjoy every leg. Glad they won some prizes. Too bad AR doesn't give runner up prize money to top three. Despite not liking Myrna and Charla, at the end I couldn't help but be impressed with Charla...

The BQ's, at 25, were the youngest team in the race. I think they did awesome and would have liked to see the first all women's team win...would even have preferred Mirna and Charla...because of Charla. Eric at 28 describes himself as a beach bum..wonder if having a half million will make him a rich beach bum...he still needs to get a life.

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- ABC has set an end date for "Lost."

The Emmy-winning adventure series will run for 48 more episodes over three seasons. Each season will consist of 16 episodes, which will air uninterrupted.

because they were going to SF, but the producers forced the teams to fly into Oakland. They didn't want a team to get a big advantage because there are many Honolulu-SFO flights too.

Basically did you see how everyone had to fly on a red eye to Oakland?
The producers created a bunching point because they didn't want a team to come into SF hours earlier and easily win.

Not fair, especially to Mirna/Charla (the blondes finally respected them for their great skills in getting early flights), but the worst part was the challenge at the Old Mint with the 10 minute limit.

I agree with others. There should have been no time limit, you stay there until you figure it out. BUT it wouldn't have mattered as Danielle figured out Eric's combo and because of that they won.

Anyone notice several times in the finale we got to see Dustin's thong? She is hot and was wearing a nice black thong. :-)

Is anyone surprised that Eric and Danielle aren't together? But wow, Danielle has one awesome rack. I wonder if she is still single...

Hi joy n.:

I was Anon at 8:32am. I hear what you're saying about E/D winning fair and square and I agree with that. I wasn't trying to say that the producers favored them. I just didn't like the way the last task was set up. I think whatever order the teams arrived at the Old Mint was the same order they would leave. My frustration wasn't about E/D being in the lead, just didn't like the task.

Personally, I didn't like Eric's comments through the whole show, so wasn't happy to see him win. But I do think they won fair and square.

Hope that helps explain :)

I'm just glad the blonds didn't win! As long as they lost, I'm happy with whoever won!

I didn't like their game at all!

Did AnybodybutHillary see the Republican debate? What a bunch of losers...and three who don't believe in evolution. They can watch their campaigns evolve into nothing.
