'American Idol' - Live Results Show - May 16 - Live-Blogged from the East Coast

Jackie's TV Blog, American Idol
The show is starting here on the East Coast. I'll be updating this entry as events air here. Refresh or return to this post to catch the latest as I'll almost constantly be updating.

Elliott Yamin and Maroon 5 are on the show tonight. Homer Simpson opened the show, now they're recapping last night.

Talking the tour now.

Ryan is talking to Jordin about between the shows and her trip home. We're getting more video from her trip home. I expect we'll repeat this with Blake and Melinda.

Ryan is going over the judges' reactions with her now, so I think an announcement is coming.

Nope, it was a ploy. Ryan led her up to the moment, then told her she would find out later in the show... as would we.

Returning from commercial... Ryan is introducing the American Idol Challenge winners this week. Of these three finalists, who was not in the final three... Elliot, Kat or Taylor? Silly question as always. The info is on the website.

Ryan is talking to Blake about his trip home now. They're playing Jimi Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" in the background of the segment. Blake plays to the crowds and camera well. Ryan is going over the judges' reactions with him now, lights dimmed.

Ryan had Blake go sit down and now Elliott Yamin is on stage singing. Wow, what a difference in looks! Randy: Yo, it was hot. Paula: I'm speechless. Simon: It was great. Elliott made a faux-pas and mentioned Porsche. Heh.

Leading into the commercial, Ryan said, "Maroon 5 coming up and Melinda goes home." Don't get in an uproar... I'm sure he means via the video clips like with Blake and Jordin.

No announcement as to who's really going home yet.

The Ford commercial is set to "Everybody Wants You." Why do these always remind me of old Monkees or Beatles bits?

Ryan is talking to Melinda about her trip home now. Simon is bored. Randy has the lights dimmed and is going over the judges' reactions to her songs last night. The results are put off once again as Ryan quick-plugs the new The Band Show and they go to break.

More The Band Show casting info. Maroon 5 is on. I think the song is "Makes Me Wonder." (Correct me if I'm wrong on that title.)

THE RESULTS: Almost 60 million votes. Jordin is safe. It's between Melinda and Blake going home now. Argh. Melinda Doolittle is going home.

The final two are Jordin and Blake. The best singer didn't make it, but will probably have a long and prosperous career.

Will they hurry up already!!!! My son won't let me change the TV so I am dying. Criminal minds is good though.

Unknown said...

So who do you want to lose?

Anonymous said...

I dont want anybody to lose they are all good. I feel bad for Melinda - she is good. But I love Blake.

Anonymous said...

OMG OMG OMG OMG!! I cannot believe she's outta there! I didn't want her in the finale, but I can't believe it happened! Don't worry Jackie, she'll still have an album out for ya. Give her about a year ;)

Anonymous said...

Nooo! Okay, well, I liked all three but I agree with your post from last night-I would definitely buy Melinda's cd right away. And we all know that she will have a cd out.

Anonymous said...

Shocker.....Blake and Jordin.

Unknown said...

WOW!!!!!! Who would have thought!!! But I love Blake so I am very happy to see him at the end, duking it out with Jordin. He's entertaining to watch. And Melinda will have an album to start on sooner than the other two.

I WILL NOT be watching the finale. Bad decision! The best singer got voted out tonight.

I'd vote for Paula before I voted for either Jordan or Blake. BOTH should have been voted off long ago (before Lakeisha.)

And the West Coast thanks you. Have to get on the phone.

Way to go Blake

Jackie S. said...

I'm not worried. I haven't bought any American Idol winner music ever to this point. ;-)

Really shocked to see Melinda go. I honestly thought it would be Blake. I know there are a lot of Blake fans out there and I wish, somehow, like Survivor, it would have been a finale with the three of them. But I still love Jordin's voice the best and hers are the only CD's I would buy (unless Blake makes a cover of that song he sang a couple of weeks ago, can't think of the name of it at the moment). But I honestly probably wouldn't buy any of Melinda's or Lakisha's because I still think they both sounded so much like a lot oof other singers out there. I just didn't hear anything special coming from them. I'm still rooting for Jordin all the way.

Ya know... Simon probably has Sony BMG writing up a contract for Melinda as we speak. Heck, he may have had one ready just in case ;)

Anybodybuthillary - Missed your strong opinions! Welcome back!!

I'm sure many people out there will buy Melinda's or Blake's or Jordin's music. To each his or hers own.

Blame our parents for the Dumbing of America. Only in this country are our children allowed to choose a person based on physical appearance and not talent. How are our kids allowed to publicly state that I won,t choose a person because they have no neck instead of talent?.
Shame on you America

Well, damn America. Go Blake!
(Where's that smiley face??)

Since when are Blake and Jordin less talented than Melinda. I think it a matter of personal taste in music rather than looks. I like Blake's music.

Jackie S. said...

I think they're all talented. (Certainly much more than myself!) However, I think on a technical level, Melinda has the best singing voice and rarely makes any errors. Blake is a performance package and Jordin is still growing and learning. All three worked very hard to get to this point and I'm sure they'll all be successful. Heck, even Kelly Pickler is becoming big time these days. The show opens a lot of doors for the contestants.

I don't know if all the blame can be based on if a person has a neck or not. I think one of Melinda's problems was that she reminds ME of a older person. She does not seem as if she's 29. I'm 44 and she reminds me, not to be confused with LOOKS, like she's my age. I listen to her sing and I hear her STYLE, phrasing and such on an Adult Contemporary radio station more than I hear her on a Top 40. Blake or Jordin, on the other hand, fall into the Top 40 genre, and I think THAT'S what the voters are choosing.

Now... all that being said, from a technical standpoint, Melinda was the BEST singer but sometimes the best in a particular field does not equal what the public wants. And after all, it is the PUBLIC that buys the CD's and calls the radio stations for requests and that equals $$$$$.

I agree, Melinda did not seem fresh. Like Jackie said - Blake is the performance package. This is a TV show - hence we watch it not just listen to it. It is about appearance as much as it is about singing. Jordin is young - she will do well regardless. I feel bad for Melinda but I can say she will not be a back up singer. She will be a lead singer with or without AI.

I was pleased with the results tonight. I like both Jordin and Blake, and Melinda is already a star. She'll probably have the longest career; she's fabulous.

Now I can just enjoy the finale, because either Blake or Jordin as the winner would be fine with me.

Not voting for someone because you think she looks too old is ridiculous. If you think she is the best singer it should not matter what she looks like. You can't tell me that Taylor Hicks looked like a kid. Why is it alright for a man and not a woman. They need a new system of voting... more like "Dancing with the Stars"

Anon 10:55; Laughed out loud at your comment. Thanks for the giggle.

I picked this final two from the beginning but didn't really think it would happen. Melinda is a great singer, yes, but I personally became bored with her and Lakisha both quite a while ago. They were predictable. Fantasia was great too and on the same level as Melinda but who cares much about her now? Jordin and Blake are the whole package. I think Jordin will win it, unless Blake can "blow it out of the box" like he did in Bon Jovi week. It could be a close vote. I haven't bought much in the way of idol music. I have Kelly Clarkson's second CD (I didn't even watch her season of idol). I have some of the Now CD's that have songs from Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry that I like. I'd consider buying something from Carrie Underwood, I do like a couple of her songs though I'm not into country as much. I wouldn't buy Reuben or Fantasia or Taylor and knew I wouldn't throughout their seasons. I could imagine buying something Blake or Jordin might end up doing based on what I've seen so far.

jackie - i agreed with you on the ford music videos reminding me of a monkees type tv show !!

i just read on msn's reality tv column that chris daughtry's album is the best selling of any idol "loser", and it's the only one i bought (well, orkmommy bought it, & i downloaded it on my computer & listen to it all the time) :) anyway, i think that melinda will fare just as well - she was by far the best technical singer ever - she put true feeling into every song she sang, unlike blake, who, to me sings without really thinking or feeling the words.

i do like both blake & jordin, & think it's a toss up as to who should win - they are both young & hip, & very refreshing to watch !!

to anybodybutjanelle / anybodybuthillary - i really thought you were going to show up as anybodybutsanjaya for this AI season !! welcome back, we love your special spin on things !!

Hi everyone!

I am ok with the results...

Melinda will do just fine, and I also believe Blake and Jordin will both be successful no matter the end result, so everyone wins! I just think that it is terrific that they are all so entertaining!

I believe Blake is most improved, as I never would have predicted a boy making it to the finals with the way the season began.

Anon 11:33pm

I was never a huge Fantasia fan, and I didn't watch AI until the season that Carrie won, but I believe Fantasia is doing just fine!

"On April 10, 2007, Fantasia began starring as Celie in the Broadway musical, The Color Purple."

Should be a great finals!

In the beginning I was Wowed by Melinda and Lakisha, and Jordin and Blake barely registered on the scale. As time went on though, Lakisha and Melinda sang well, but were stuck in an age gap that kept them singing in another generation. Jordin isn't my fav, but she emerged as a truly talented young singer and I do think she deserves to be in the final. Blake, blew in from nowhere and proved he wasn't just a beat-boxer, but an entertainer. The final two are the two that need to be there and hopefully it will be Blake that takes the "cake". Blake will go down as my favorite Idol to date, with Taylor,Chris and Constantine following behind...

GO BLAKE!!!!!!!!!!

I was sad to see Melinder go, but I think she will fare better without the AI contract. Simon will sign her, no problem there. I fell asleep before they announced. Not sure why they have to be an hour long! Elliott - OMG! I loved him on his season, and look at him now. New hair, new teeth, new confidence... HOT. :) Thanks Jackie!!

Very sad to see Melinder go but I will also buy her CD. I think Simon is usually dead on with his comments but disagree when he says that Idol is a "singing competition" It is a performance competition and technically flawless singing isn't enough. I like both Blake and Jordan also so I would have been sad no matter who went last night.

Since the rules changed in year 2, what does it really matter who wins?

I know Fantasia's doing fine. She probably could have got on Broadway on her own, without being an "American Idol". My point was she and Reuban were great singers but don't really encompass what being the american idol is supposed to be IMO. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood turned out to be what I believe and idol is supposed to be, they are having huge mainstream success.

I was not a happy camper last night when Melinda didn't make the finals. She was by far the best singer in the competition - technically and otherwise. I thought her performances were always dead on and appropriate to whatever genre she was singing. After thinking about it a bit though, I'm glad she didn't win. She can now put out an album on her own terms without any of the restrictions put on the winner. I think Jordin will win by a landslide, because pretty much all Melinda's votes will go to her. I know mine will.

Sorry for posting so late, was under the weather last night! What a shock! I was flipping back and forth from Criminal Minds(really good last night)and just caught it when Ryan said the part about"now a break and then Melinda goes home"and I froze, cause it was way tooo early to announce that! And I thought, hmmmm,is he trying to tell us something? But I hadn't heard him and what he'd said about the other two,so I just dismissed it.

Sorry to see Melinda go,but she was never my favorite, for all the reasons I have said. Now I hope my girl,Jordin, can bring it on home. I just hope they aren't picking her songs next week(yikes!).

GO JORDIN!!!

Melinds was my favorite, but I knew from the beginning that she wouldn't make it to the finale. That's ok with me because she'll do better on her own.

I wonder how far she would've made it on America's Got Talent or some other show like that.

Anonymous said...

Sorry to see the best singer leave, but Milinda just didn't have the "look" people vote for. We are a shallow nation. Whoever picked Melinda's clothes every week didn't do her any favors...I would have put a vee cut top on here every week and not those heavy necklaces. She needed to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative visually and that she didn't do. Despite her wonderful vocals she lost out to people who were more attractive though less talented. Sad.
