'Hell's Kitchen' - Season Premiere

Hell's KitchenHe's back! In all his fury, it's Chef Gordon Ramsay!

Tonight's season premiere seems to indicate it's going to be another hellish season in Hell's Kitchen. The new crop of top chef wannabes seem to be even more inept than last season's contestants. And, I thought their qualities were more lacking than not.

No one shined tonight. Not a one contestant seemed professional, knowledgeable, skilled, and able to work with others.

The Blue Team, the guys, had many weakest links, and no real leaders... at least none who emerged in tonight's show. Aaron, a 48-year-old overweight emotional Asian man prone to wearing cowboy hats, would probably have been cut had the team not won. Oh, mind you... not one patron was really served a whole dinner and even the appetizers didn't make the rounds. The team won more by default as the Red Team was even worse.

The cooking on the Red Team wasn't worse than the Blue (both teams were horrible), but it was the fighting amongst the team which did them in. In my opinion, the instigator of it all was Joanna. But when they lost, the one who had to name names decided that Joanna and Tiffany would be chosen to stand before Ramsay. A girl named Julia (?) was the more obvious choice for going home -- she works in a waffle house, has no real "big time" restaurant experience, and broke down in tears.

Gordon Ramsay made the wrong choice. He sent Tiffany home. Joanna's behavior was obnoxious and will probably only grow worse the longer she stays.

It's going to take me a few weeks to get a handle on the names, but I think the show is off to a good start. Your thoughts?

I agree - Joanna should have been sent home. Tiffany made one of the few signature dishes that Chef actually liked. The women were the epitomy of how not to work as a team.

I totally disagree about Julia. Her signature dish was better than those of some of the more accomplished chefs but was undone by using too much pepper, and she seems to be the only woman capable of frying an egg properly. This is an unbelievable lack of skills. The Red Team's problems were exacerbated by their constant bickering and lack of communication was even worse for Julia because no one at all wanted to have anything to do with her.

Funniest thing of the night wasn't Aaron crying (I sense he's either on the verge of a heart attack or a sever anxiety attack) but the one guy - Vinnie from New Jersey - who claimed that Gordon used a word he didn't understand and so he laughed. The word was "rubbish". I can't wait for Ramsay to call him a "pillock" (it means, roughly, a dickhead).

I agree Jackie...how can they be that bad? Most are line-sous chefs, how do they work in a kitchen with others where they work? Total chaos. I think the blonde girl should have gone home (name?) Aaron made us laugh, do not know if to call him a poor guy or u have to be kidding! I wonder where they get the diners, I bet they offer them a meal at a GREAT real restaurant for coming and sitting there with no food. Will prove interesting to see how this pans out. PS Gordon was in rare form last night, I am amazed he does not have a stroke.

didn't any of these people watch the previous seasons ?? this is how ramsey is, he screams & yells & swears !! i would never go on this show, cause i would either break out in tears & embarras myself, or end up telling him to kiss my a&$ - this season is shaping up to be a real loser in terms of contestants, so it should be fun for us, the audience

Aaron seems like such a lovable guy and yes, very emotional, and I think the stress of this show will probably do him in quickly. I was very surprised to see Tiffany go. I agree, it should have been Joanna. What an unlikable creature she is! She's already said she'll flirt and manipulate to get what she wants and will "F": over anyone to make herself look better. Vinnie is already showing an ego problem. You just can't mess with Chef Ramsay that way. His mouth may get him thrown out. Haven"t made up my mind about the rest of them yet. I do agree that Joanna is going to be a BIG problem. Holding my interest so far. I could never work for Ramsay, either. I'd probably be wearing Depends. LOLOS! (Or Shudders).

We started watching Creature Comforts at 8 but ended up remoting. Too cutsie for prime time! Ugh!

Jackie, Waffle House should be capitalized. This is the name of a string of 24 hour (essentially) diners along the Interstate system. The food is prepared "out front" not in some back room of a kitchen. Limited menu with eggs (any style) and hash browns being the mainstay.

JAckie,
It seems to me they went into the cooking so fast this year without showing alot of the prep time. I haven't seen many likeable chefs but I think the men have a more cohesive team. I like the 5'2' guy who is 28 and I think the young italian. They both had personality's. It should be an interesting season. Glad your blogging it

Susan,I also tried CC,but found it to be kind of pointless. Don't think I will be watching again, but then there was NOTHING on at eight.

I just don't get the point of HK!!Do they try to find the most untalented and odd people they can??? I would think one requirement would be to have a modicum of talent and knowledge of how to work in a pro's kitchen. Is the only requirement to be able to stand there and have Ramsey scream in your face and call you names? I'm sorry, but why would you even attempt to open an upscale place with unknown talent in the kitchen? He doesn't try to teach them anything,so that suggests to me they are expected to know how to do these things and they don't. I'm not sure I'm going to continue watching this(but again....what else is on)because there is no humor to it,just screaming, yelling and fighting among themselves. I agree with Jackie, nobody stood out as having much talent at all,no front runner or even a distant second.BAH!

This show was awesome last night. So much drama. First off, I love Julia. Who cares that she doesn't have professional experience. She knows what she's doing and even when all the girls were excluding her she mostly kept her cool and refrained from yelling and screaming. Although Joanna is definitely trouble in the future I think Tiffany was the right choice to go home. She fought with almost every girl on that team and refused to accept any help when she couldn't fry an egg. By the way, how awesome was Melissa for nominating Joanna and Tiffany. Many props to her for realizing that just because Julia is less experienced doesn't make her less valuable to the team.

I only saw the first few minutes when they were tasting the scallops. FH came in and couldn't take another reality show, so I "let" (allowed) him change it to the history channel. :) I'm sure I'll get caught up next week.

I think this is the most service I have seen Chef Ramsey allow on the first couple of episodes, usually he shuts it down FAST

They've got some real characters this season! I thought Aaron was endearing for the first few minutes or so, but after about the third crying episode, I was through with him. Yes, Joanna has way too much attitude, But I'm sure Ramsey will break her down pdq - she does seem to be able to cook a little at least. I did feel sorry for Julia from the Waffle House - they were all acting like she was worthless, yet she was the only one who could fry an egg, go figure! I think Tiffany should have been sent home - after about the third or fourth attempt, it was way past time to let someone else take over. I don't know why Melissa told her she was safe though, that was pretty low.

Waffle House are grease pits. Greasy eggs/hash browns etc...yuck. Tons down south, in Montgomery AL there are 3 in about a mile and a half.

Green Valley Ranch Casino/Hotel is beautiful, not on the Strip, but near Henderson NV. I heard winner gets $250,000, and the chef job. Let's hope someone ends up worthy of it!

Sharon: Obviously we don't see the scenes of Ramsay (and Scott and Mary Ann) showing the contestants how the dishes should be made. These are not, for the most part, people who haven't had some previous training in the culinary arts either.

I think Melissa told Tiffany she was safe because she expected Ramsay to get rid of Joanna. I can see Joanna turning into the one that they all hate (this year's Sara). Realistically though, the only way she could get rid of Joanna was to nominate Julia, who wouldn't be dropped by Ramsay because she cooked the eggs, and Ramsay would have called her on it. So my guess is that she didn't care if either one of them went - Joanna would have been preferred, and her personal pick if she were in Ramsay's shoes but it really didn't matter to her which of the two went.

I also disagree about Julia, it was only because of her that the appetizers got out eventually. Tiffany couldnt cook an egg for her life. Julia stepped in and did it only after asking to help a million times, tiffany basically ignored her. not teamwork in my opinion. I understand she wanted to try it but at that point she was just awful. I think the right person went home although most of them arent capable either..
