Survivor Gabon - 10/02 Show

jackie's tv blog, survivor

Okay, Survivor fans and those in the pool ... the show has started here on the East Coast. I won't be live-blogging it per se, but I will update this on and off with important events and/or some thoughts of mine. As always, everyone is welcome to chat it up in comments!

Wow, that rewards challenge was brutal ... and Fang actually won! They're sending Sugar to Exile Island.

That seems to be the wrong choice ... she's found four clues and has it!

Yikes, Fang won Immunity!

Paloma is out, Sugar didn't use her (and Ace's evidently) idol.

woah, comments just bumped to the next page! we're over 200!

That wide smile as she speaks is making me think of beauty pageants.

Biden sounds hoarse, does he have a cold or just over used his voice?

Anonymous said...

this world is so complicated!

i sometimes wonder what the original signers would think and say if they could be brought back to seer how things went....how would they vote? what would their thoughts be on all the issues we deal with today...

Sydney said...

"Oh man, it's so obvious that I'm a washington outsider, you all do things in such an odd way. First you are for things you vote for, then you say you are against those things... People just want you to talk straight."

boy, good writers!

Sydney said...

SO totally pagent-y Sue. It's a turn off but that's just my own opinion!

Unknown said...

Stop the genocide in Darfur! If you haven't read "Lost Boys of Sudan" or seen the documentary, it's an incredible story.

ever see sarahs "vogue" cover when she first became govenor?

thanks for age clarification!

Sydney said...

Nancy -- after the vote debacle in FL, i thought the same thing about the founding fathers, that they would turn over in their graves to see it all

Anonymous said...

sarahs cover...fan on...hair blowing.....title something like "cold state hot govenor"

i think that was it...

Sydney said...

She does that kind of pagent-y thing or aw shucks I'm such a common person thing with that wry smile flirting with the corners of her mouth and then she stares in the camera and powerfully delivers a straight line about Mc Cain's policy. Even if it's all coached, I wonder if the pundits will be saying she aced it.

Biden is doing a good job in his way. Not saying he's not aceing his part, but he's just not so newsworthy as she is at the moment, since she 1) came from nowhere and 2) is a woman.

Laurie said...

Sydney, I agree. We watch to see the subtle things because the words are really more campaign blah blah blah. But to see how each reacts to what isn't scripted and read some body language is interesting.

My daughter just called from Chicago to tell me she thinks this is like a beauty pageant. I will bring peace to the world .... She also (as a linguistic student) did a spot on imitation of Palin.

i give sarah the win on energy...biden the win on iraq-war knowledge jmho

im a teacher....edu is pathetic today. sad sad sad

Anonymous said...

I was waiting for the Regan quote, "there you go again". Did she just mention Biden's deceased first wife? I must have heard that wrong. Can they both hold it together for another 45 minutes?

Unknown said...

Politically, I am very middle of the road. I've always liked John McCain, and I want to vote for him. But I can't see putting Palin one step away from the Presidency. In this day and age, and with McCain being the oldest potential newly elected president, there's obviously a risk. I think she would be eaten alive by her advisors and dither us all to death with indecision when needed.

While McCain put life back into his campaign when he selected her, how many votes will he lose based on that very reason?

Gayle said...

Sydney, yes she is scoring points, but she is not authentic! Pageantry and staged! Sexism!

Anonymous said...

oh PLEASE keep government OUT of education

Sydney said...

as I am barfing and actually angry as I see her open once again with that Aw Joe there ya go again with blah blah elbowing him in the ribs kind of approach my husband is saying a lot of people relate to her for that.

Then after she drops that she gives a serious answer with none of the little smile, the batting of the eyes, etc, and even though she made my skin just crawl I then am proud of her comportment. As a woman, I just want her to be powerful and straight shooting if she is, but then maybe she would seem intimidating or cold to "the common man"... I don't know. What do you all think?

Sydney said...

wooo biden just said Cheney is one of the most dangerous VPs we've ever had! If he never shows up at his hotel tonight we'll know that's just too true! lol

Unknown said...

Nancy... that vogue cover was a fabrication, joke by some blog

Sue... I think she was referencing his current wife who is a retired teacher, not his deceased first wife. She just said that putting in 30 yrs as a teacher, she has her place promised in heaven.

Anonymous said...

While Biden spoke of what his role as VP would be, the line on CNN went up, both independent and Democrat. When Palin gave her answer the it was a flat line, including the Republican.

my niece teaches 6th grade in East Harlem. Burnt out after 3 years but is still going. She does so much out of her own pocket... buys supplies, does after school programs she created, gives them her CELL phone number to call and ask questions about homework! She's a saint!

Thank you Clementine! All I heard was Heaven and it confused me.

Sydney said...

ooh sue, I wish we were watchign CNN to see those lines.

Sexism!, Yes, Gail.

Joe Biden's little attempt at sympathy didn't shake me.

Sydney said...

agree Gayle

Anonymous said...

omg, when she said 'maverick', all three lines (CNN) including the red one, dropped.

Gayle said...

Sydney, she reminds me of that joke - where a cold deadly poisonous snake asked a man to warm him and carry him across to dry land and then bites him to death once he does. Someone sneaky that can't be trusted!

Anonymous said...

Sydney, I am watching CNN on the computer and typing on Jackie's.

Unknown said...

Does anyone know an unbiased website where one could find each candidate's voting record?

Sydney said...

agreed Celmentine!

Anonymous said...

i do think palin has a disadvantage in that if she is powerful and strong they will crucify her as a bad mom, guy-like, etc... if she is too womanish, she won't be taken seriously. ugh! a job i couldn't handle! i'd flip people the finger...then go home and cry LOL

Unknown said...

Gayle, I think you need to temporarily change your blogger name to Anybody But Sarah, LOL!

Up 'thar in Alaska!

Sydney said...

I have been middle of the road and was truly considering both candidates. When she came on I was hopeful that here was a person who has taken a bold stand for what is right, often against her own party to fight corruption. Within about 3 days I was too concerned that she's a heartbeat away and have not been able to get past it the more I've seen of her and the more I've learned about her.

Anonymous said...

sydney...i understand your sisters position.....my husband always says we make more money when i don't work....all my pay and then some goes out to supplies, kids, etc..

Sydney said...

As an aside, I feel like she's a little like Lady Di who got into the royal family unknowing, and their machine took over and she disintegrated. I think Palin is stronger than that, but I know I wouldn't have held up under all this scrutiny.

Sydney said...

Boy , if her answers are memorized, I have to applaud that.

Sydney said...

Oh geeze, I am not liking this speech from Sarah. Let's see how biden does

Sydney said...

interstingly the line for women is going straight up and higher on his than Palin's and men aren't far behind

Gayle said...

Yes Clementine! I just don't like her! I think McCain chose her as his running mate based on sexism! She is to replace Hillary Clinton and capture all of the Democratic voters that voted for Hillary. It's obvious that she knows next to nothing and comes off playing to sexism.

Anonymous said...

ahh!! we made it thru the another debate. if theres another one...i want the immunity idol...

yes, i say i give up on politics...and then i have to listen and hear what is being said so i feel like i can vote with intelligence. (well, you know... )

Unknown said...

I know this is obvious, but Biden's closing speech hit it home. Their ticket's biggest selling point is fundamental change from the trainwreck of the previous administration.

I'm surprised they didn't spend more time on the economy. Not a strength for either.

ok y'all.......its been fun...good nite....

Yikes Gillian lol
**********************
I'm glad Sugar located the idol,
I'm watching debate, I wonder if Joey took his aspirin this afternoon, veins on his temporal areas are popping out.
I love Mrs. Palin black formal suit wear, for myself, dressed in black is considered one of a kind, yet it also stands for elitism style, power, sophistication, formality, elegance.
I participated in a relative studies 2 years ago, did you know sports teams with primarily black uniforms were significantly more likely to receive penalties.

Color psychology is a relatively new area of scientific research, ancient civilizations believed in the influence of color on humans, colors used in the design of environment can have a significant impact on the emotions and performance of people within that environment.

I also took a course on Color and psychology last semester.
I'm not by any means being judgemental, color clothing is a interesting subject, because the assumptions no longer supported what psychologist originated years ago. I tend to wear all black, it's a style option.
I'm over 6ft, last year the media referred me as Jolly Green Giant, I'd worn a green suit.
Today I laugh, I admit it hurt my feelings, people make harsh assumptions in my case.

I didn't plan to watch debate but I wanted to hear a woman spook Joey, I apologize if my comments are inappropriate.

Black's a great color for month of Oct. Goodnight all.

I'm chuckling thinking of any visitors arriving to the blog in the morning and seeing 250+ comments on Survivor, and getting very confused somewhere in the middle!

hahahahaha!

Sydney said...

Ok, now on CNN the comments.... Palin is uneven they say, though conservatives said they feel better and relieved after the nosedive she took that she resurrected herself.

She tired to be folksy like Ross Perot, but does it have the sustainability to bring people over not just not turn people away.

There were no major gaffes. The polls will show if this is any kind of game changer.

She was out of her depth in foreign policy and was saying rehearsed scripts. Biden was reserved, when Pailn kept mispronouncing the general's name, he didn't correct her. He lost people when he got into senate speak.

Thanks Jackie, I had no one to watch the debate with and then I checked in here and found lots of friends!

Great debate no matter what side of the aisle you are on. Thanks for making it interesting from a fashion point, lol. I loved reading the comments while listening to the two candidates.

Just to clarify my comment on crying... I was referencing Tom Hank's in A League of Their Own... "There's no crying in baseball."

:)

Sydney said...

My husband things she's totally down home and believable, finds nothing unsavory about her little smirks or facial expressions... nothing disingenuous at all. I am amazed as I am quite bowled over by it, as much as I wish I could admire her, regardless if I disagree for the most part on her politics. I guess that means that there are all kinds of voters across the country that could say the same thing as her.

He says it's refreshing to hear someone who sounds normal, and not polished who is in a position to be in actual power in washington. It does not mean he is going to vote for one or the other, he is just commenting on her style. A totally cringy turn off to me, totally warm and real to him.

Sydney said...

clementine -- that unbiased voting record site... you can look at the US congress site and see their records which shows a summary of the bills I think as far back as you want, and how they voted for it.

Go to yahoo or google and search for senate voting record. If you find anything interesting, let me know

Anonymous said...

Sydney, i think the cringe factor is a man/woman thing. Woman in politics and in business in general have worked hard not to be perceived as anything except serious and professional. It seemed a step back to have the big smile blazing all the time. I don't mean that as nit picking. I think she handled her questions very well and was not the embarassment her party feared she would be. If either of the three male candidates had worn the same expression throughout the entire debate, we would have wondered at their sanity. What is Obama smiling about, we would ask? He is talking about a serious subject why is he taking his position so lightly? It just made her look pretty, men might say. Nothing wrong with that, they might say. Men probably didn't even notice what tie Biden was wearing, but we did. Men..Women..we see things differently. : )

Sorry I am late to the party!! If I had known, I would have "debated" with all of you!

I cannot stand the smirks, down home talk, "gonna", "betcha", yada yada yada.

I am so sorry, but I don't need a soccer Mom in the White House. I want someone strong to take a stand and fix this mess we are in. If I lose my retirement savings that I have worked my life to accumulate, I will lose my mind. I am not a huge fan of Hilary, but I would take her ANY DAY over this schmarmy, home spun act.

"Oh, Joe, say it ain't so"??????

Between that and the wink, I threw up a little bit in my mouth.

PS: Great episode of Survivor tonight!! Loved Sugar finding the II, and loved the slip n slide. Also great editing in making us think that Ace had something to worry about.

But so so sad that Sugar told Ace that she found it. ;(

I guess you get out there, and just need a friend??

RBennie said...

Good morning all! Jackie, we need a new post - this one is monster long! Sorry I couldn't live blog with you guys last night, but I was watching. They had me sweating there for a while Nancy. I thought our boy Ace might be a goner. He's actually starting to grow on me though. Way to go Sugar! I was happy that she found the idol. The pin up model found it and the lawyer didn't - go figure. Can't believe Fang won 2 challenges in a row. I doubt the luck will last long, but good for them. Bye, bye Paloma (sorry Tessa), but she was starting to grate on my nerves.

RBennie said...

Oh Sydney - you said the exact thing I was thinking when I saw Bob sitting at TC. He looked like an extra in Night of the Living Dead! It was bizarre. I didn't even realize it was him at first, I thought it was some kind of statue.

I think the Ace and Sugar friendship is cute. Sorry PDX Granny and Monty, but your boy GC is a bit of a quitter.

PDX Granny said...

Good morning!

Just popping in to say Have a Great Friday!!!

I'll catch up on the comments later. I'm off to work now. :(

Hi Gang, waited till this am to read all the posts...youa re such a great group!
Syd thanx for the comment on my blog, your support means more than I can ever say.
Im so proud of our man DAN Joy N, he had the "want to" didnt he? Bless his heart.
That poor Bob looks like he might waste away!
The Betty Boop Refernce to Sugar was spot on....and Syd...your interest in men intriques me....but do you like Mr Rogers? I wanted to move next door to him myself.
Personally I like Joe Biden and Sarah Palin....If Biden was VP and he died, sicne he is older, does nancy Pelosi get to be VP? Need research on that one.
Back to Survivor....I so enjoy all of your comments and I wish We really were in our "teeny weeny leopardprint bikin's in a pool watching this together....

Caroline said...

Good episode last night. I definitely prefer Kota and I think they made the right decision last night. No matter the personal conflicts in your tribe, the first time you go to TC it is always the best move to vote off the weakest person. Had Kota voted Gillian off first, they may have won the 2nd immunity last week.

I can't stand GC he is such a whiner and quitter. What good does it do to eat 3 meals a day if you'll run out of food 5 days from now? And that's now the 2nd challenge he completely quit during and left his teammates to do all the work. Can't respect a person like that.

On the other hand, I loved Sugar last night. Way to go persevering through the jungle to find the II. And she totally had the best comment of the night when she got sent to Exile. Loved it.

I'm still liking my girl Corinne and the onion alliance. She's a little forceful, but super smart and it looks like a lock for her making it to the merge at least.

I want one of those slip n slides for my backyard :-P

Caroline said...

Terry...I know if both Obama & Biden were to die than Pelosi would be President...so I think she'd be VP if just Biden died.

Pelosi having any more power than she already does is fairly terrifying to me.

lynn1 said...

I may be very wrong but I believe if for death, illness, or what ever reason Joe Biden could not continue to be VP that Obama would be able to select anyone he wants to serve as his VP.
I don't believe the the VP position would go automatically or by law to Nancy Pelosi.
I am not basing this on any research I have done but on the fact that when Spiro Agnew was VP and had to leave office, Pres. Richard Nixon was able to choose who he wanted, Gerald Ford.
The speaker of the house at that time was a democrat, I think it was Tip O'Neill but I could be wrong there too.
On one more political note, someone had mentioned they wished they had a place to check out the candidates on voting records and issues. I would like to suggest a nonparitsan site.

I am officially "DUNN" talking politics (for today anyway! LOL)

Good morning all. I didn't have a chance to watch the show last night so before bed I thought I'd pop in here and see what happened.

The first thing I see is 264 comments....I think; wow something good must have happened!!

I didn't know you all were commenting on the double episodes....
Survivor: Gabon
Survivor: The VP debate

I had a good laugh at that!

Still haven't watched the debate but seem to know pretty much the direction it went....thanks Sydney, clementine, sue, nancy, gayle and monty.

Sydney--sounds like your house is divided like mine. I'm very leery of Palin and my hubby says "she'll be fine"....hmmmm.

As for Survivor: Gabon---I was glad to see Fang win because my girl Susie probably would have been gone! She is weak but I think GC is weaker because he quits. Has he never seen the show....compete till you die and don't eat all your food the first week! Sorry PDX just not lovin' your guy.

Bob looks awful. If he is there too much longer they are going to have to give him IV fluids! Being a physics prof. losing last night must have killed him...his comment after Fang won was "It's simple math!!"

The reward comp. was brutal. I'll bet there were lots of bruises the next day.

Does anyone know how long the person has to stay on Exile Island? I noticed different clothes on Sugar and was wondering if they were in her bag and she's there a few days.

lynn1 said...

OK, I lied. I was interested in what the law is on replacing a VP so I googled it.
Here is what I found out. See number 2 for the specifics.

http://www.usconstitution.net/xconst_Am25.html

U.S. Constitution - Amendment 25
Amendment 25 - Presidential Disability and Succession

1. In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

3. Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

Notes for this amendment:
Proposed 7/6/1965
Ratified 2/10/1967

Who knew I would get a Civics lesson in addition to all the fun chat about my favorite shows, right here on Jackie's Blog.

Caroline said...

I could be wrong about this, but I think it's only like 24-30 hrs they spend on Exile. They leave after the Reward challenge, spend the night and then appear to be back at camp sometimes late the next afternoon.

It's only 3 days between TCs and since the exiled person plays both reward & immunity, it doesn't seem like they could be gone much longer than that.

But even 1 overnight by myself might be too much to handle in some of these climates & countries.

lynn1, before we quit the political talk, I want to add that I think you are right. I had forgotten Agnew, but am basing my thought on West Wing. : ) Isn't it sad that TV shows teach me more than the the history I actually lived through? DUN with it now. Hi all,

I never would have guessed we'd be talking politics on the survivor page.

I thought the moderator was biased, no offence to her. She wrote a book on Obama and she let Biden speak last after almost every question (I didn't count; if someone knew the exact ratio for last remarks for each question, that would be cool). Biden might have been better at jumping in with rebuttals, I dunno. I just think each question should trade off for who gets the last rebuttal before swtiching the question. (Or each candidate should have the same num. of turns per question; It seemed to me like Biden kept taking an extra turn.)
