TV Newsy Bits and Other Stuff - Oct. 10, 2006

Well, well, well. What's been happening with the boob tube and me last night and today?

Last night, I once again watched Heroes. I'm not sure where the story is going, but I'm sticking with this one. I've been a comic book fan for eons, although I've fallen away some over the years. I love the character of Hiro more each time I see him. I'm not sure how the show can work longterm as there's supposedly some sort of nuclear disaster appearing within weeks, but I'll go for the ride with them. And... if I were to have some sort of superpower of my choice, I'd choose flight. After all, I could skip all the New Jersey traffic congestion.

I also caught JP, recently cast out on Survivor, on Late Night with David Letterman. He seemed very different than he did on the island. He definitely wants a job and sure sounds like he wants show biz.

Tonight, it was the Law and Order block for me. The second one (SVU) had Jerry Lewis appearing as Munch's uncle. He's suffering from a depression-related disease which at times mimics Alzheimer's. I think he did very well in the role, but in the end, the episode was more tragic than most. But, sometimes it's good to think.

What did you watch?

In TV Newsy Bits, here's some of the scoop I found out there:

Hey Jackie-

It's such a rush to be the first commenter... never could pull that off this summer. My fingers could not type fast enough. OK, maybe what thrills me calls for examination... lol. Onward.

We watched Heroes on Tivo, and I said when it was over, now how are they going to make all these divergent story lines come together to save the earth... or make a new one, since perhaps they will survive like cockroaches... Moreover, how could the various powers we've been shown that each different person has all be needed -- I understand if you can time travel or tunr time back, also if you can not be destroyed or can fly. But how would the girl with the alterpersonality in the mirror come in handy when there's a mushroom cloud? Any thoughts on this?

Watched the second episode of Friday Night Lights just because I have recently moved to Houston for a 2 year period... and my finacee grew up on the whole Texas football thing, and has told me so much about it. I do like the guy who plays the coach and his wife enough to deal with the more Dawson Creek parts of the show. The pressure the team feels is mirrored by the pressure the coach is getting from every parent, politician and postman in town, and they are successful at making that palpable. There is also a pretty high production qulaity to how they film and edit the football scenes and practices, so that's the good stuff I can say about it. I know people have been not giving it good reviews on the blog. But I would probably not be watching it if I didn't have the personal reasons.

Fall is offering a slew of good movies it seems. This doesn't happen often but it just may make for a more exciting award show season.

I hope you are enjoying the fall weather back home Jackie. I bought pumpkins out here in 90 degree heat!

Hi Jackie!

Well, as far as TV for the last few days. . .

My Sunday line up is TAR, Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters. And I still say "dump him, Sarah!"! I am not sure exactly how I feel about her, as I am so busy being annoyed by him! There are some extremely likable teams this season, and it is such a pleasure to be past the family edition!

Monday was all about Deal or No Deal (as my Prison Break has a few weeks off!) followed by Bachelor: Rome. I know they rarely find true love, and it would really be corny if it did happen, but it is such a train wreck that I can't stop watching. I came to dislike Erica, the socialite, even more in the second episode! What a brat! At least they played down Ms. Desiree, "ooh, baby", a bit more this week, which was a good thing! He seems down to earth and pretty humble for a prince, so I think I like him and would love to see him at least find someone nice to date.

For those Deal or No Deal fans, here is a link to an online version that can be slightly addictive! Don't say you weren't warned!! :)

Finally, tonight was Dancing with the Stars, which I am enjoying once again this season, followed by Law and Order: SVU. I completely agree. The ending was a jolt, and extremely thought provoking.

You keep writing, and I will keep reading! I miss those @@ eyerolls, though! Let's all find something to roll our eyes about!

Have a great week!

Dear dla..........I have an eye roll for you....why did those judges on DWTS rave about Jerry Springer when he looked like a buffoon and really didn't even dance much during their spot. He just pranced around like a dope, like he was on "I Love Lucy"...@@!!!!! Now Mario has always been my favorite but I thought WILLA was great last night and EMMITT was right up there too! I think that Cheryl is a big part of his success, she is a great partner, I hope either Springer or SARA goes tonight.....IMO they are the weakest.

I watched BOSTON LEGAL at 10 last night. What a hoot!! Now this is how the legal profession SHOULD be portrayed.......LOL. I just love James SPADER and William SHATNER(who I never really cared for)and then,Candy BERGEN as the voice of sanity in the nuthouse!!

I'm excited about that new game show on NBC on Friday at 8(?). It's called "1 vs 100" and it's not just about what case you open or how lucky you are(that got old for me REAL fast) but how much useless junk you know.

My wife and I watch That 70's Show and sometimes she watches Dave with me. I don't support the culture of That 70's Show at all. Being removed from it in many ways, we can enjoy it as simply mostly-appreciated humor...for adults.
I have to put in my disclaimers, for the sake of my own integrity etc.
Anyways, I have been looking forward to tonight's Lost episode like I've not waited for anything in decades... I feel like a little school boy. I saw the first two seasons on DVD, after the fact.
I'm trying to cut back on TV, as we will watch maybe one show beyond news once we have kids, but Lost is ubiquitous in my head.
My sister-in-law is hooked on Lost, too.
I'm totally cookoo for cocoa puffs.

J.P. looked nicer than on the show but also less clueless, and also quite desparate for a job as you mentioned. Poor Dave has to do the Surivor thing. Of course I love it when he does, being a fan of both shows. I think Dave has finally accepted it.

boogie boogie boogie
I'm glad for the sake of Will (concerning Boogie's win). I wish Boogie would just go away. I'm a big believer in capitalism so his success is all good. The issue would be his persona vis-a-vis the other poorer players.

Hey dla - I watch the Bachelor religiously... and wonder what you thought about who he picked in the end... It seemed so improbably that he kept the spolied princess and the Yeah Baby girl -- though I do understand his judgement might have gotten clouded by all her bootyshaking in his face... (a few @@'s here, as well as a ;-D)

Do you think he kept them for real or he had to bend to the producers?

Both girls are the most colorful and it'd probably help producers to keep em in for the next few weeks. What do you think?

Also, he's technically a prince... but contrary to the intro, I keep reading his only business is a pet grooming one? And why is he not in a fabulous loft in New York... unlike Andrew Firestone, who was obviously heir to and active in a multifaceted empire, I don't get the impression our Prince is very princely. He flies but does he OWN the plane?

Jackie -- Bachelor is kinda trashy/dishy like BB was -- any chance you can open a chat for this one like you did DHousewives?

sydney - I have no idea how all of the powers on Heroes are going to play out, but I'll keep watching! As for Friday Night Lights, I'm just so not into football that I can't get any interest in watching it. I know. It's un-American of me... or something.

dla - I'm glad you watch TAR! Alas, I don't watch Deal or The Bachelor. Eep!

sharon - That 1 Against 100 thing looks pretty interesting. I may have to tune in.

quistian - I'm going to have to watch Lost with your theories in mind.

And, sydney... I'll get up a The Bachelor discussion post for you tomorrow!

Sydney...........do you know,is this "prince" on the show one of the family that hawks the bath abd body products on HSN?? Because that's their name too...Bourgese(sp). They both are called "royalty" on the info spots and his name is Skip and he sells the stuff with his "mom" named Amanda. They sell Elaria and Perlier products and they are on all the time. I think Skip even mentioned the "Bachelor" by name on the show the other day.
