'So You Think You Can Dance' - Blog Discussion Post

Um... no. I don't think I can dance. At least not now. As a child I took tap dancing classes for several years. I could kind of sort of dance back then. These days I'm better off sticking to jazz hands.

But the contestants on FOX television's So You Think You Can Dance range from amazing to "no, you can't." While I'm not a huge fan of Dancing With the Stars, I really enjoy this dancing show. As I write this, it's in the audition stages and it's the poppers and break-dancers I enjoy the most. Now, you don't see that on DWTS!

Right now I'm cheering on the break-dancing Asian guy who was sent home last season due to his lack of a work visa. What's really horrible is that I'm forgetting his name. Oy! But I think he's a dazzling entertainer and I'd love to see him go far in the show.

I see Nigel has promised to be nicer this season. I also see he's chomping at the bit sometimes. Heh. If I were to go on the show, I bet I could make him be cruel!

Although I'm sure to be posting on the show on occasion, I'm opening this post for general show discussion and invite y'all to join in with your comments. The official FOX website for the show is here --> So You Think You Can Dance. Right now, of course, the contestants for this season aren't up... because we don't know who's going to make it through the Las Vegas cuts next week. But you can relive the memories of the past two seasons and return once the competition is in full swing.

Are you watching?

Thanks for the discussion post, Jackie! I'm watching!

How about the guy with scoliosis the other night who was such a great dancer? Hope Shane gets him into that movie, cause he's really entertaining.

And the former football player whose dad wasn't happy when he wanted to be a dancer? That must be hard for both of them. When they were sitting next to each other and the boy was telling the dad how much his support meant, the dad had no expression on his face. I just wanted the dad to reach over and give his son a hug! (What is it with men and football??) Hope this kid makes it through the Vegas rounds; he was pretty good for only dancing 8 months.

Nigel seems to be gritting his teeth in an effort to be nicer. That won't last long! Do the dancers go through pre-auditions with the producers before they get on tv (like on American Idol?) I never liked that process. To set someone up to look like a fool is cruel. Hope it's not the same on this show.

Oh,I think they have tried to be nice(a whole lot nicer than those three on AI)but,it's true that some of these people are so deluded when it comes to their talent. I thought Shane was kind of nasty to the big,African-American girl. I didn't think he had to point out the obvious, but maybe he was ticked she wasted their time. They have all had their moments, but again,it's not been as bad as AI. They even have been more than kind and encouraging to a lot of them they turned down.

Jackie, did you catch Bengy's little sister on the auditions? Bengy was there to partner her and they put her straight through to Vegas, although they did caution her(like Bengy)about the facial expressions. I hope she's as good as Heidi, who I loved last season. The lyrical and modern dancers seem to be their favorites,a good amount of them got straight though.

sorry...brain freeze.....I guess that would be Benjy...with a J,not a g...duh!

Hok is my favorite--that guy is just incredibly talented! He's the one who had visa problems last year. Hope he makes it all the way.

dla said...

Yeah! Thank you, Jackie!!

Stating the obvious, you rock!!!

One of the things I love about this show is that the auditions are actually enjoyable to watch most of the time! They seem to show a larger percentage of good to great dancers, with filler that showcases some of the less than great.

I totally agree that Nigel is really working hard to be nicer this season. Mary just cracks me up most of the time, especially with the scream. ;)

Shane did get a bit tough with the one female "dancer", but, overall, has been so supportive.

Benji's sister was cute!! I love Hok, and it is great to see him back for this season.

It looks like this season could be great!!!

I am not watching at the moment, but I DO remember the talented guy who had to leave last year due to no visa and I was crushed for him, as I think the judges and everyone was. So glad he's back... did he make the cut???

dla said...

Hi Sydney!

Happy Sunday! Yes! He is back, and has all the proper credentials!

His name is Hok (Hawk?), and he made it through to Las Vegas!

Anonymous said...

I'm watching also Jackie. I liked Hok (is that really his name) last year as well as this year. He's fantastic, but I worry that he'll be able to keep up with the partner dancing once they get into that portion.

I agree that Shane was a bit harsh with the overweight girl, but then why would she get up there in the first place. She has to know she can't do some of the types of dancing they have to do.

Anxious for them to get into the real competition.

i actually am watching this season, as benji's family lives just down the street and his father was a teacher of my daughters LOL !!

Does anyone know the name of the instrumental song played at the end of the So You Think You Can Dance episode airing June 7th? It was right before they did a recap of the top 20. The same song was played on a couple of different "Friends" episodes, one being the first time Ross and Rachel kissed. If you know the name or artist, I would love to know!

Jackie S. said...

Matt - Instrumental? I'm pulling a total blank on the SYTYCD intance, but wasn't it The Crying Game on Friends? I could be totally off. But if it is The Crying Game, Boy George sang it... I think.

Hi everyone!

Great show tonight! Not a lot of dancing, but quite a bit of emotion!

It looks like the top 20 could be good! I was sorry to see a few of them go, but also thrilled to see many of them stay.

I love to watch their progress as their confidence grows throughout the season, so I guess we begin that process next week!

Hok rocks!!

Hey, what happened to the girl from last year from south carolina who hurt her ankle and couldn't continue. Nigel told her last season to come back and she'd have a place in the Vegas audtions. Anyone know anything about her?

Anonymous said...

Great question about the girl from last year. What happened to her?
This years pre-top 20 went way to quickly. It did not give you any time to get to know them.
Hope everyone gets a chance for a bio. Kind of an unfair advantage to those that have one.
Let me know about that blonde from last year. I missed one of the shows this year - maybe they said something.

Anonymous said...

Thank goodness I found you! I'm going crazy trying to find out title and artist for the song played when Ernie "EJ" Siera (hairdresser - 3rd guy to audition in LA - big guy)danced. Any clue? Anyone?

Anonymous said...

This is the 1st time I watched this show - Did they make a dvd of last year's show? I'd love to get/rent it.

Does anyone know the song that Mia Michaels used for her lyrical
choreography audition on Wednesday June 6 2007 during the last part of Vegas Week? It had cellos in it and it was beautiful - I can't seem to find the name of it anywhere!!

Does anyone have any clue where I could watch the complete show online? I'd really like to know- don't have tv, but love watching this show. Fox' web site blocks people from posting where they have it posted... any input would be good.

Thanks!

What a great show!!! This is a strong top 20, based on the performances tonight!

I am really liking many of them right now, and I found them very entertaining. Special place for Hok, of course! Benji's sister is cute and talented, but I doubt she wins, as it would appear suspect.

I felt a bit sorry for Ricky and his partner (I forget her name!) as they are both truly talented, but so ill matched as partners! It reminded me a bit of Paulina and the short male professional dancer on DWTS... Simply not suited for each other, and no one is at fault!

Who is watching? Who do you like one night into this season??

Jackie S. said...

I'm cheering Hok on, but think that he and one of the others lucked out with the style of dance. The dance about the Triplets from Bellville was the best of the night, I thought. I also thought that some of the girls are quite tall this season while the guys not so much. That does throw off the aesthetics. The host is so much taller than anyone! It's a good thing she's not dancing!

Anonymous said...

I'm watching, dla! I am truly amazed at the talent up there on the stage. They go into rehearsals and look terrible and then, just shine on stage. And I agree,it was painful to watch Ricky and his partner(what was her name??).It looked as if she was leading almost the entire dance. And it's too bad they get put into jeopardy by having a less than perfect partner.Good thing they can redeem themselves in the solo rounds.

Hok was good, but don't think it was my favorite. I loved the watlz, and I liked Lacey's number a lot. But I think what dla said is true, she has strikes against her just because Benji won last time. And I'm sorry, but I just don't get Mia Michaels,I think she's freaky. Some of the contortions she requirs of the dancers are not pleasing to MY eye,at least. But I really, really enjoy this show.

Anonymous said...

I thought HOK and his partner danced beautifully. So did Danny and Anya (the Russian) though her cockiness turned me off a bit, Ricky and Ashlee did seem at a disadvantage with the height thing (they looked awkward). But I have to say, my favorite last night was the Waltz. It's like they floated on air and that was my favorite Norah Jones song, too. This is going to be a great season!

Anonymous said...

I thought Lacey's dance was phenomenal! What great choreography that was and what a terrific job Lacey did! I really wasn't sure I would like her in the beginning. A little too cocky and "Benji is my brother" thing. After seeing her in her first competition, she can say and do anything she wants as far as I'm concerned...that girl really has talent!

I also thought Hok did an exceptional couple's dance. I wasn't sure he was up to it...but then obviously what do I know.

Really enjoyed the first episode, they are all very talented kids.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GIRL THAT GOT HURT LAST YEAR???

NIGEL INVITED HER BACK TO VEGAS FOR THIS SEASON. DID ANYBODY SEE OR HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT HER???

dla said...

Anon 11:57am

I just read online that they saved a spot for her, but she couldn't dance this year because she is PREGNANT!! :)

This is just a great season!! These dancers have really brought it in a big way the last two weeks, and it makes for some great viewing!!

Anonymous said...

Boy,it is going to be a tough season this time. There are a lot of really good dancers! You start out and think,,,boy, nobody can be better than that andboom, the next one is better.I guess I am just a sucker for the waltz, because it was my favorite again last night. I also felt really bad for Cedric,Raina really showed her stuff and he was left standing looking like an beginner.I fear he will be dancing for his life again tonight. And is it just me but I don't care for Raina. Somebody mentioned Anya acting "haughty" but I get that vibe from Raina and I didn't much care for her "hip hop" routine last week, but they saved her.She is my least favorite of the girls. The boys...well they are a great group and the BBoys continue to surprise me.

Anonymous said...

WHY do I have such a mental block on this girl's name....Faina! It must be because I don't care for her much that I refuse to remember her name right! Maybe she will leave soon and I won't have to worry....lol.

Anonymous said...

I agree, Sharon, this is going to be a tough season because so many of these dancers are very good. I had mentioned last week that I thought Anya was a bit cocky, but I didn't see that at all this week. I, too, seem to have a soft spot for the waltzes because I thought anya's and Danny's Viennese waltz was absolutely beautiful and SO romantic! As the judge's said, "It was like a dream". I also agree that Cedric may have danced his last dance last night. Despite the judge's opinion of Jaimie and HOK's samba, Iloved that too. It seemed a very well-done modernized version of that dance. I thought they wanted the dancers to go out of the box. Also, my faves from last week, Jessie and Pasha did a great jazz number. Finally, although they were called the sexiest couple and I know a lot of you are rooting for Lacey, I thought he was very sexy, she, maybe not so much. She is a very good dancer, just not sexy in that number. Oh! I also loved Jesus' version of the Paso Doble. Now that was SEXY!

Anonymous said...

Oh,I agree with you,Joy,on almost all of your likes. They give the dancers mixed signals, just like on AI.AND....these are routines by choreographers,so they bear some of the blame for the style and tone of the dance. The steps they spanked them for were put in the routine by the choreo,so what gives?? And they bashed Lacey's partner and I thought he did "sexy" very well indeed. And since I'm not a Mia fan,I just can't stand some of her comments!
But,I just love mary this season, she is a hoot(screaming loudly)!!

Hi everyone!

Happy Wednesday! Another great show tonight!! I am really enjoying this group, and they continue to amaze me. Each week I think that somebody has to drop the ball, but they are workin' it!

I hope the girl who was in the hospital is ok!! (Cannot remember her name) How sad, as I am sure this was probably a lifelong dream.

Anxious to see how America votes!

Anonymous said...

Oh,I agree,Dla...the whole group is just fantastic this time. You see a routine and think, that's the one and then some other couple comes along and is equally as good or better. I really liked Sabra/Dominic and their rumba and thought it was a knockout and then.....Jamie /Hok came along and it was so hot, hot, hot(fanning myself)!!Lacey/Kam were pretty good and I felt so bad for Pasha,I sure hope Jessi is better, but things don't look so good for her now.I kind of hope that Cedric goes home,I'm just not sure he's ready for this, and then Shauna, who is dancing her heart out,can hook up with Pasha. The routine I think I liked the least was the hip hop that Anya/Danny did, though I really like Danny and thought he was stronger than Anya in it.But Hok and Jamie...did I meantion I thought it was HOT!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Sabra/Dominic's rumba was my favorite dance. It came across on all levels - really beautiful.

But having said that, my vote went to Pasha because I think I am in L*O*V*E with him! I've transferred my Apolo crush to the super-hot Russian! HOT, HOT, HOT (insert Mary scream here)

BTW, if anyone is a fan of ballroom from way back, the woman who stepped in to dance with Pasha is none other than Melanie LaPatin, Tony Meredith's competitive partner and wife (ex-wife?) I think they were trying not to distract from Pasha, and so just introduced her as Tony's "assistant" but she was a world champion and now owns a dance studio with Tony. Check out this video of them back in the day...WOW!

I remember Melanie and I also remember her being on either "How Do I Look" or "What Not to Wear" some time back! She was something back in her championship days.

Anonymous said...

Sabra and Dominic's Rumba was beautiful last night and even though it didn't count, I also loved Jessi and Pasha's Latin dance (didn't catch the name of it) tonight. Guess i'm as much a sucker fot the Latin dances as I am for the waltzes. The waltzes are beautiful and romantic and the Latin dances are hot, sexy and full of life. Ole! 2 weeks, huh?

THANK YOU for the YouTube link!! Tony and Meredith were HOT in 1994!

Not that they are not still hot, but just a different kind of hot!

That was amazing! And I laughed out loud when I read your comment about transferring your Apolo crush. That was priceless!!

And Sharon, am I sensing your crush has been transferred to Hok?? Just a wild guess... :)

Joy N, I am with you! Two weeks is an eternity with the current TV offerings!

Have a great weekend!

Wowwy, wowwy, wow! I believe I mentioned (several weeks ago, has it been that long?) that I L*O*V*E my Russian heart-throb Pasha! Well, Holy Guacomole!! (insert Mary scream here) I want a ticket on *his* hot tamale train! That performance just blew me away...and Sara was amazing...can't believe it was their first week together...Benji's choreography was excellent...and did I mention? Pascha is HOT!!! (insert second Mary scream here)

(I'm going to breathe now before I pass out)

can anyone tell me the music danny had for his solo?

Anonymous said...

Did anyone else notice that the opening number had only "6" girls dancing? Who was missing and why??

Fill me in please.

Anonymous said...

Anya was missing but not sure why.

She should have been the one to go.

Two very bad solo's in a row.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunate, but true.

Anonymous said...

Well, I may change my mind about Anya again. She and Danny danced beautifully last night. They definitely should NOT be bottom three tonight!

Anonymous said...

I definitely agree, joy! But I'm worried that Anya and Danny just don't have the fanbase to stay out of the bottom 3. And if she needs to "dance for her life" again, I think she might get sent home. This would be the 3rd time, and her solos are really lacking. I have my fingers crossed for her, though!

Sabra is my favorite girl. There's just something about how she moves her tiny body into those perfect positions.

My choice to go home would be Lauren. I feel like she got a free ride from the judges a few times and she just seems very full of herself. The routine last night was my favorite from her so far, only because she was wearing goggles and couldn't mug for the camera the whole time, LOL!

Can't wait for next week when they switch up partners! I love this show! :)

Anonymous said...

Just loved Sara and Neil's disco dance last night. They should definitely be in the top three tonight.

Anonymous said...

I agree, joy n. The Neil and Sara disco was tons of fun. And that backflip split by Neil was incredible.

Based on the performances, I think Dominec and Jaimie should go, but you never know who'll get the most individual votes. It will be interesting to see if Danny is still at the bottom, now that Anya is gone. Not sure if people disliked him, or both of them as a couple.

Still rooting for my boy, Pasha!!

Anonymous said...

I have new favorites, Sabra and Neil! Thought their Jazz dance was fantastic - such COOL moves, absolutely loved it. And their Paso Doble was totally passionate. I wanted to be 20 again and doing what they did on that stage. I also thought Lauren and Danny's Contemporary Dance was beautiful. Couldn't take my eyes off them. I thought, too, that Pasha was great. I, however, am totally over Lacey. Her solo was same old, same old, thought her mannequin was a total flop. She mugs every moment for the cameras. Her smile is so off and on - like it's on auto or something. And I can't stand her thunder-thighs. Sorry, JMHO.

Congratulations, SABRA!!!!!!!!!!
