'The Amazing Race 11: All Stars' - Ep. 10 -or- "Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting"

Well, well... I found tonight's Hong Kong leg very entertaining. I'm still not too thrilled with a few of the remaining teams (cough:::Mirna/Charla:::cough:::Eric/Danielle)... but I thought tonight's challenges were a lot of fun and Hong Kong has always fascinated me.

Four teams remain. Who will be eliminated next?

The teams departed from the House on the Hill in Kuala Lumpur in the order they had arrived. There was less than a two-hour gap between first and last place this time. The first team to leave was the Beauty Queens (Dustin and Kandice) at 12:28 AM while the last team was Oswald and Danny at 2:19 AM.

They had to get flights to Hong Kong, then travel 22 miles to a laundry where they were to receive their next clue. The two-hour gap was meaningless as no flights were available until morning anyway. Of course we had to endure airport drama.
Dustin and Kandice
Eric and Danielle tried to stare down Dustin and Kandice as they Yielded them last week. Internet attempts to obtain tickets didn't seem to work this time although I thought it interesting that the Burger King had Internet at the airport. In the end, Oswald and Danny seemed to find the best plan -- going downstairs to await the arrival of the ticket clerk rather than waiting at the closed counter. Alas, they decided they'd work with/help Mirna and Charla.

They said they did it for the karma just as others were saying that karma would get Dustin and Kandice for the Yield. Actually, D/K are right. The Yield is a part of the race. All the teams are supposedly in it to win. But it seems indeed the good karma worked for Danny and Oswald and the bad karma really didn't harm the Beauty Queens.

Danny and Oswald got the first flight out thus sending them directly to first place from last. (Yay!) Most of the airport stuff was the same old sniping between teams. Mirna told the Beauty Queens, "Take your padded bras elsewhere!" And so on... and on. I found it interesting (and not totally safe) that Charla had heelies on in the airport. It did speed them along as Mirna dragged her. Why haven't they used them before? They had to be heelies, right? Eric and Danielle once again ended up on the last flight leaving.

Since the ChaChas, Danny and Oswald, arrived in Hong Kong before any of the other teams, they were the first to find the Fast Forward at the laundry. Well, of course they took it! The clue directed them to the old International Airport where they would take part in a high-speed movie stunt. Now we're talking!
Danny Prepares to Roll Over
These are the kinds of things I like to see on The Amazing Race! They weren't told exactly what they would be going through before experiencing it, but both took it all in stride. They knew from the gear they had to don that it would be something exciting and probably a tad dangerous. And, it was.

Once geared-up and strapped in, a stunt driver took them through a course which not only was high-speed, it was a roll-over! Woohoo! They both seemed to love it and took their clue which would send them directly to the Pit Stop skipping both the Detour and Roadblock the other teams would face. Oh, and they had to take a Travelocity gnome with them.

But the Detour was kind of cool, too. Well, at least the choice all of the teams made. One of the choices sounded a bit boring, but even Charla and Mirna went for the more physical task. Teams could Kung Fu Fight or be Lost in Translation. The latter was the boring task -- they had to study a sign in Chinese characters, then find it. Yawn! But, hey, when everybody's Kung Fu fighting, you know it's as fast as lightning! Oh, go ahead... click on that Kung Fu fighting link. You know you want to do it.
Charla at the Kung Fu Fighter Wall
Dustin and Kandice arrived at the Detour first. Thinking that Charla and Mirna would go for the non-physical task, they went for Kung Fu Fighting. Actually, Charla and Mirna originally went for the Lost in Translation, but changed their minds. Once at the Detour, the teams had to climb up eight flights of scaffolding while being "attacked" by Kung Fu ninja-types.

Dustin and Kandice got through it first, then Charla and Mirna. Danielle and Eric seemed to be lagging way behind due to their later flight, but did the task in great time. I only wish that Danielle wouldn't wear low-cut sports halters in every country. I know some men probably disagree with me on that one. Heck, even the Beauty Queens cover up with t-shirts and such.

From there, teams had to take the Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island to find the next clue at the Old Police Headquarters. While Charla and Mirna took the wrong ferry, they remained ahead of Eric and Danielle.

The clue there was a Roadblock and, while not so exciting, dangerous, or even hard, it was sort of fun. It seems the show capitalized on the film industry in Hong Kong, mainly the adventure/crime/martial arts genres. One member from each team had to go through the old headquarters knocking down doors to find a clue in a room. Charla and Eric (not at the same time obviously) really got a kick out of it. (Heh.)
Sail Away, Gnome, Sail!
From the Roadblock, teams headed to Victoria Park where there were gnomes on junks floating in the lake. They had to gently pull their chosen gnome to shore without drowning the gnome.

No one drowned the gnomes, but Eric and Danielle seemed to be far behind even though editing attempts of the race to the Pit Stop tried to tie them in with Mirna and Charla. I personally don't think it was as close as they tried to make it seem.

The Pit Stop was at the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Danny and Oswald arrived there well before the other other teams due to the Fast Forward. Here's the order of arrival:

1. Oswald and Danny - They also won the most expensive trip of the race, a trip back to Hong Kong for the Chinese New Year. Wow, I'd love that!
2. Dustin and Kandice (don't see that bad karma doing much there)
3. Charla and Mirna
4. Eric and Danielle, saved by a non-elimination leg. They will be marked for elimination next week and must come in first place or suffer a 30-minute penalty.
Mirna, Charla, and a Gnome
Okay, what's with the gnomes? They usually have a gnome-challenge each year, but the gnomes are marked to win prizes. Phil didn't ask to see the gnomes although all the teams brought them as directed. Did I miss something? It seemed the ChaCha's trip was a regular non-gnome related first place winning one.

Will Eric realize that he should sometimes listen to Danielle? Is Mirna being suspiciously edited as being nicer to Charla?

So many questions... I guess I'll just have to wait until next week!

Jackie,

Maybe this year they will have to drag the gnome with them during the next leg, since pulling the gnome across the pond was near the end of the episode?

Enough already with the "my friend" from Myrna and Shmirna...it's so annoying and seems to annoy everyone they use it on. The taxi driver probably took them to the wrong ferry just because they were so patronizing and annoying.

That was just a fun show!! You- know-who was as annoying as ever, but I sure love the Cha Cha's. They really play with dignity and class.

Is everyone else as OVER the airport bickering scenes as I am???

A trip back to China for Chinese New Year would be absolutely wild! I am thrilled Danny and Oswald won that trip, as I think they will have the most fun!

I sure wish these episodes were available online to watch again.

Since the show was taped several months ago I would assume that Oswald and Danny have already gone on their "trip back," as the Chinese New Year was in Feb. How exciting. I bet they had a great time. I really REALLY hope they win.

I've said it before and I'll say it again ... although I am not a fan of Eric and Danielle, I am less a fan of the "my friend" two. So, I hope the next show they are eliminated. I've had enough of them. The sound of Mirna's voice IS like fingernails on a blackboard.

Thanks Jackie for all you do. I love coming here to get your take on things after the show. You're the best!!

Strictly speaking what happened to Charla & Mirna and the Star Ferry was that they told the cab driver that they wanted to go to the Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island. The cabby drove them to the Star Ferry terminal on Hong King Island. The the two self righteous twits boarded the ferry which took them back to Kowloon. If they had just asked to be taken to the Star Ferry Terminal they'd have been in the right place. If on the other hand they had realised where they were when they reached the terminal in Hong Kong (by cab) they'd have had a penalty added to their time.

Hong Kong has been very good to Danny & Oswald, but they went down a little in my estimation when they gave the Malaysian Airlines booking code to Charla & Mirna because Dustin & Kandice had used the Yield.

I would bet there was a prize(period) for the 1st gnome to cross the finish line. If no one had gone for the fast forward then the gnomes would have been used. Also an extra Travelocity plug! We have seen people who have used the FF come in other than 1st also.

Was amazed at Charla and the bamboo wall. She probably used the shoes b4 but that is the 1st we were to see them. Brent is correct M/C caught the ferry on Hong Kong Island and they went to Kowloon. Just what theu told the driver, "Hong Kong Island-Star Ferry"!!!! Not Star Ferry to HKI.

Jackie, I know you said you are high above ground, but hope you are not water-logged just from rain rain rain. We have not gotten one flake of snow and on Weds - a foot was mentioned? Stay safe all!!!!!

Good episode!! The only thing that would have made it better would have been M/C being Philiminated! Oh well,I thought Charla was a real trooper on the climbing wall. And,once again,M got to do the "hard" task of pulling the gnome while C got to kick the door in!!What a twit M is!!!AND,I,too, hate the "my friend" thing too, cringe each time I hear her use it.

Love it,love it that our CHACHA's came in first! I am so hoping they win the whole enchilada! M/C worked them on giving up their seat code by appealing to their fair nature over the yeild thing, when it should have been E/D that they gave the edge to. Oh well,we can keep hoping that M/C bite the dust soon, but I see E/D going home next week unless something drastic happens.

GO CHA CHAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delee- I'm fine, but it doesn't look like I'm going to work. My own street is closed a few blocks to either side of me. But, what's worse is that to get to work I have to go through a town that's being evacuated - Bound Brook has been flooded by the Raritan River which is supposed to crest 10 feet over flood stage later today. If I could get into work, I may not make it home. So, I won't go! :-)

How come the Cha-Cha's got to use the fast forward twice? I thought the rules said each team could only use it once. When they joined Uchena and Joyce as a tag-team, they used a fast forward then too.

Anonymous said...

Maybe because the first time it was used with Uchenna and Joyce during the intersection? I also was a little disappointed that O/D helped Charla and Mirna, the nicest helping the worst, so to speak. But I was so happy to see Oswald and Danny win the trip to Hong Kong too. If they don.t win this, I'm hoping for the Beauty Queens. They're the only two teams that don't irritate me to no end. I can't stand C/M's phoniness much longer. I am soooooo hoping they'll be gone soon. When Mirna mentioned Karma, I thought, hoppefully, it will come back to bite her butt. What a totally dislikable person she is!

Good episode last night! Cha-cha's were so excited with their trip! They deserved it. I would like to hear from Mirna's family to see if she irritates them as much as she does the rest of us. The scene with Charla on the heelies was great. I am interested to know what the time difference was for the last two teams. I didn't understand why E/D didn't go full speed in case someone messed up. Thanks again Jackie! KC in DC

Maybe the cabbie took them to the wrong place because he didn't understand what they were saying due to the fake spanish accent. Do they speak spanish in Hong Kong? ;)

Maybe "my friend" with a fake spanish accent is "you jerk" in Japanese...

From the promo for next week's show it looks like the rest of the teams join forces to stop the Beauty Queens and all decide to use the yield on them. I hope our girls manage to come in first anyhow. Go Beauty Queens...they have played the best game, don't fight, and are nice to everyone they meet during their comps. They definitely have demonstrated that being beautiful and blond doesn't mean you aren't strong and smart. Glad to hear you will be able to stay home today Jackie...no day to be out and about in NJ. The Raritan River is a problem whenever there is a storm.

Im glad the Cha-Cha's gave Charla and Mirna their code for the tickets, Dustin & Kandace deserve a taste of their own medicine. It kills me that they trash talk M/C about how they have never seen such conniving people when at the other airline that they first went to they were trying to convince the ticket agents to bump everyone and put them first on the stand by list. They are always trying to use the good looks and fake smiles to connive their way into something. I think it's just so hard for them when the shoe is on the other foot.

That being said, I can't stand M/C either and am completely rooting for the Cha-Cha's to win it all. They are the only team left with a bit of class.

1.) I am surprised you didn't mention that FINALLY the prize for a leg of the Amazing Race was a trip back to the place of the pit stop! (Hong Kong!)

This has been LONG overdue and the lack of this has been quite insulting and pathetic...yes you win the leg ending in gorgeous Mauritius only to win...a trip to Hawaii! Come on now. Kudos to TAZ for finally doing the right thing.

2.) Anyone notice that in the Malaysian airport they seemed to dub over some voices of the people at the airport. You could totally tell because you heard a voice, saw subtitles, but several times the camera quickly moved away so you wouldn't see their lips moving (because they recorded voice overs).

Probably was too hard for viewers to understand them, which is okay.

This is a really good point that once again Jackie failed to mention. Must be because of her bias towards the annoying duo of Oswald and Danny.

Anon @ 5:49 - How about signing a name to your nasty comments? Or, better yet, since you can't read what I write without insisting I write from your point of view... go elsewhere. I have no problem with folks with different points of view, but there's no reason to take it to a personal level. I'm allowed to have a favorite team in the race just as you are. While I've perhaps not been too kind to your favorite Mirna and Charla team, I haven't cast any aspersions about those who do like them.

Danny and Oswald could use the FF because the first one was used with another team in the Intersection.

Shoo, now... go play with your games. You keep posting nasty anonymous comments here about me and they will be removed.

Hiss Anon 5:49...Jackie is our girl. We all have different points of view but no reason to trash the person who has created this forum for us and who gives us such comprehensive updates. Jackie puts in a lot of time and effort and we can all just sit back and enjoy...so be appreciative or go elsewhere.

Deanna, how about when C/M went not to the counter to secure tickets but to the basement and insisted they couldn't go upstairs to wait in line and then lied about shutting the door (saying they were cold) even after the agent told them to leave it open when all they were doing was being their usual sneaky selves. I think, too, that Dustin and Kandice's smiles are very genuine, so is their politeness in all the foreign countries they have been in. That is quite the contrast to Mirna's VERY phony smiles to get whatever she needs at that moment, along with the phony accent, the phony emergencies. How many times has she asked airline agents not to help whoever is behind them or told citizens of some foreign countries not to give directions to whoever is behind them once they've gotten theirs. I know it's all part of the game, but please don't make them sound like saints compared to D/K. Mirna takes the cake for conniving and rudeness while D/K have shown they possess Class. . AND Orkmommy, loved your comments at 10:17. Very, very funny!!!!

I like Charla. I can't help it. Mirna, well, she grates on my nerves too, but she comes with the team. I would love to see the Cha Cha's win. Eric and Danielle don't appeal to me - one reason is that they were never a team, just a part of two teams. Not really an "all-star" for me. JMHO. Danielle DOES need to wear something less revealing. Beauty Queens are better in this season, but still a little too stuck up for my taste. It's been a good season.
