TV Newsy Bits - Tuesday, October 2, 2007

Jackie's TV Newsy BitsWell, this is interesting as I'm both a Law and Order: SVU watcher as well as a Lost fan ...

I just finished watching tonight's new SVU and the guest star creepy dude was played by actor Keven Tighe. Now, Kevin Tighe also played John Locke's father in Lost. Guess what? Both characters on both shows used the name Cooper and it wasn't the real name of the character in both instances. Weird, I say!

I think I might watch too much television. I thought of Amber from Big Brother 8 yesterday. Scary. Here's what happened ... I got off my train and took the elevator up to the ground level from the tunnel. I shared the elevator with both a black man and a Latino man. When we got up to the ground level, there was a group of Orthodox Jewish men with flowers and candles. They let the black and Latino men pass by, then stopped me.

"Are you Jewish?" they asked.

Huh? I immediately thought of Amber -- my nose! My name! I wondered why they didn't stop the black man to ask him! Although I wondered if I would get a free candle or flower if I said I was, I told them no. Then I saw the Sukkah-Mobile in the parking lot. It had the canvas walls, but the times they are a'changing. It was kind of cool, though. I've seen sukkot on streets, but never one built on the back of a pick-up truck. Happy Sukkot!

In television viewing, I watched Cavemen tonight. Never again. I actually enjoyed the show following it -- Carpooling. But I don't think it's worth sitting through Cavemen to get there. I'll stick with Bones, thank you.

An article I wrote yesterday for TV Squad was published today. It's about bizarre reality television shows including Celebrity Shark Bait out of the UK.

Jackie,

You have great stories! And I had not thought of Wamber once since the season ended!

I watched NCIS, DWTS, and Cane tonight. All in all, not a bad night of mindless TV viewing! :)

What kind of minds think up these ideas? Reality shows are getting out of hand, but the best ones are still going strong. I just read yesterday that the producer of Survivor (I forget his name at the moment) says next season will probably be the last for Survivor. He said it was time to move on. Hope that's not true.

I tried to watch Caveman, "just because". The first 5 minutes were enough for me. Carpoolers was a little better, but I doubt I'd tune that in again either.

I'm still enjoying CANE and not only because Jimmy Smits is in it. I really like it.

HOW DID I MISS THE CAVEMAN SHOW?????!!!???!!?

That was one I totally wanted to watch, ok, at least once. I looked through the cable menu while watching Biggest Loser alternatinvg with DWTS, and made sure to catch Cane finally because a friend of mine plays his little brother. I a mso happy to see him in the role and he looks SO cute. I think once the world catches on to him, his life is going to change from being on this show. But I digress.

HOW DID I MISS THE CAVEMEN???? Sorry, those commercials just cracked me up and I personally could not wait to see what they could do with the show. I know it's a long shot that it could be good, and it seems from your report and Joy's that it was not. :-(

Why would Mark Burnett move on from the one idea that's consistantly stayed strong?

Holy Short Term Memory Lost, Batman! For a minute there, when reading, I was thinking...Amber? BB8, which one was she? Then the whole summer hit me in the head and there she was again in all her Amber voice saying her Amber words that carried their own private Amber meanings. Loved your describing your morning commute. I would read that. I DVRd the Cavemen, but haven't watched it yet, and probably it will go straight to erase. Thanks for the comment on it. I liked the Kelly Grammar/Patricia Heaton series premire episode, but didn't make it all the way through the second week. Not sure if it was my mood that night or the show. I love House and will go watch it now. Thanks Jackie, Sue

My hubby was so excited about Caveman and was going on and on about how he was going to love it no matter how bad the "critics" said it was. It was turned off by 8:09.

Sydney said...

Well, Mrstito, if there ever were a convincing statement that I didn't miss much, that was it! ;-)

Thanks...

Talking of Lost references. . .Does anyone watch Chuck? I would almost swear that one of the "secrets" he revealed was the real reason the Oceanic flight went down. I think he said the flight was shot down with missles. Maybe I misheard. Oceanic is a fake airline, right? Okay, now I am beginning to second guess everything. Can anyone clear my confusion?

I watched Cane too. After last week I was thinking..."It's OK probably not going to keep watching." About that time my hubby says"that was good we'll have to watch it every week!" So it's been added to "tape for future viewing" list, although we ended up watching it and I was pleasantly happy. They are starting to develop some good plots and the characters are showing their personalities.

I just caught the last half of Chuck(only OK and will probably not keep watching) but I do believe there is an airline called Oceanic.

Caveman had me for about 10 min. then I switched to The Singing Bee--enjoyed it alot more and could have won $50,000...if only I was a contestant!!

Sydney--you must know the young man who owns the nightclub on Cane? He is soooo cute. I loved his character on GH but they never gave him a good storyline. He is definitely headed for big things!! I would like to see Kelly Monaco(Sam on GH) come on Cane as his love interest.

I have heard that Jeff Probst was not going to renew a contract with Survivor beyond this year. Maybe that is part of way Burnett is not doing Survivor after next season?

Kid Nation tonight, Criminal Minds with Mandy Pinktan's final show, and Pushing Daisies!?! Looks like the VCR will be working tonight.

joy n said...

Sydney, I agree, CANE was even better in the 2nd episode. I'd say that even if Jimmy Smits weren't in it. Speaking of which, your friend actually breathes the same air as Jimmy! (swoon) (LOL)

Is it the brother who runs the club?

It was one of those entertainment news progams where I heard about the Survivor comment. Can't remember which one. It was a few days ago. (Thank you for reminding me of Mark Burnett's name, too.) Maybe it does have something to do with what NaNa NW said. I just hope it's not true.

joy n said...

Nana NW: I'm glad to hear that you and Sydney are also CANE fans. I'm really getting into the plots and characters too.

Sydney said...

Interesting Nana -- Well, without Jeff it would just not be Survivor... I can't think of another host who seems so integral to the game they moderate.

I bet Jeff would have to quit if he were to finally be able to marry the woman he met on Survivor and fell so hard for. It's been a few years and I bet he's almost never home... after awhile, home and family comes to mean more. That makes sense.

Yes, Eddie Matos... met him when he was about 25 stuffing menus into sleeves at my girlfriends then new restaurant when he was just new to LA.... 11-12 years later and there he was last night, all white teeth and dimples on my giant flat screen in the living room! Breakthrough gig! Very proud of him!

So Hung has won Top Chef. His technique and presentation are worthy of a top chef, but I still feel his social skills are lacking in so far as the people who must work with him on a daily basis.

I would really liked to have seen Casey win just for the distinction of being the first female winner.

I liked Dale and thought he had grown so much throughout the season.

Well, onto the next season.

dla said...

Sydney,

Eddie is an absolute doll!!! I picked him out during the first episode as "someone I will enjoy watching"! lol

Love the dimples, and he is hot!!

Congrats to him. I love when things work out when someone wants something so badly.

BTW Sue, I love it that you forgot for a blissful second who Amber was. We should all be so lucky as to suffer from CRC disease (can't remember crap) in her case. Bless her.

Sydney said...

PS: Arrrrrh RATS that Hung won. For some reason all my bravo shows have been coming in beyond digitized so I haven't been able to catch the final 3 ep or the finale at any of the many re-run times to see it. I figured he'd win but I know they felt Casey was just as deserving. It was clear this year the candidates were high quality. It's so great to see that in a competition show. Last season's so you think you can dance was compelling for the same reason. Every one of the contestants on that one had the potential to be finalists from the get go...

I'd have said from day one, but after Daniele overused it, I don't think I can ever use the phrase again...

Anonymous said...

Yep,I was a tad disappointed that it was Hung instead of Casey, since I really wanted a woman to win TC.She seemed to be affected by the altitude a bit and wasn't at the top of her game.I fell asleep and didn't see their dinner presentations(rats)and woke up just in time to see them name Hung the winner.I agree his people skills were lacking on the show, but wonder if that was just because he was so determined to win that he came off more than a little selfish? I still say the judges are more than a little biased against women on that show and that's a shame.

I have been catching parts of CHUCK and I really kind of like it,not enough to abandon the other show I watch, but may be able to catch it in reruns. I also like REAPER(again, snippets),is anybody else watching that? And CRIMINAL MINDS was very good last night,I really don't like that lady in charge, she's a real b**ch to Hotch and sorry his wife left him. It must be hard for the actual people who do work those cases, and I feel for their families. That little boy was creepy,no?

Shout out to Jackie......HI!!!

Re: Top Chef...I was soooo disappointed that Hung won. I thought he was the least deserving of the final 3. I was definitely rooting for Casey, not only for a female win, but because she seemed like a genuinely caring person with a passion for food. I thought she was consistently the best chef over the course of the show. But I don't think they take consistency into account enough. As for Dale, I think he was the most improved over the course of the competition. Hung always talked about having a passion for food, but I never felt he expressed it. I think his passion was more for winning and stroking his ego, than for the actual cooking. He came across as wanting to win more for the fame and notoreity than for the accomplishment aspect. Watching last night's show I really expected Dale to win, he seemed to have crafted the best meal in the finale.

Last night on TV...

I'm still having a problem with Kid Nation. When that one little boy was chasing the cattle...I couldn't tell if they were bulls or steers, but that was insane!! I can't stand that Greg brat and I absolutely LOVE little Mallory. I actually cried when she won the gold star and called her mom!!

Private Practice - This is one of my new favorite shows!! This one also made me cry at the end!

Top Chef - I cried at the end of this for a different reason. I CAN'T STAND HUNG! I think he was a good chef, but he lacks passion. I was really rooting for Casey, but after Dale's performance last night I was pulling for him in the end!

Check out this link to see a pic of Eric and Jessica posing with our faves Mary and her husband (?) from the Amazing Race on the red carpet. The link if for pic from Reality TV Awards...

More on the link -- there aer 4 pages of pictures and they are a chuckle. ED with Elvira is priceless. Eric and Brigitte Neilsen, what a pair!

Wahmber is there with spikey eyelashes (ensuring no pidgeons will land on her eyelids.... a joke for city dwellers).

AND on page 4 --YAU MAN WITH DICK! Good and Evel personified!

Who the heck is ANT?

Caroline said...

Ant hosts Celebrity Fit Club on VH1. I have no idea if he ever did anything before that, it's the only show I've ever seen him on. I'm not even sure why that show needs a host. Just to say "So and so, you're up next, step on the big scale". Yeah, we get it Ant, same schtick each week.

Sydney - I think your link was cut off because when I go there I can't see the pictures...

I saw all of them too, with no problem.

Nick and Dani looking very happy together in their pix as are Eric and Jessica.

The pic of Boogie, Jen and Will was interesting, along with the one of Boogie, ED and Will together.

Thanks for the link, Sydney.

I love the one of Yau-man and ED!

Why is Amber still wearing those little-girl dresses? She doesn't look like she's suffering any backlash so far. Hmmmmm.

Sydney said...

Gayle -- glad! Can't imagine the convo between ED and Yau Man!

Anonymous said...

I made it there!

Somebody tell Amber to stop wearing those stupid dresses! She looks like a hooker!

Love the ones of Eric and Brigitte Nielsen.

Glad to see Dick dressed up!! @@

I threw up a little in my mouth with the Daniele & Nick ones.

How about Sanjaya and the crying girl!!

Love how the ones with Hugh Hefner and his bunnies don't list their names!

I just read on AOL that Danny Bonaduce threw Jonny Fairplay over his shoulder at those awards, and knocked out several of his teeth!! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy...lol. I really don't blame Danny after viewing how it all went down. I can't stand Fairplay,he's such a slime.

Survivor night........yay!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Orkmommy for the nominated reality stars link...

Nice to see Evel Dick nominated for so much! :)

Jenn nominated for "Hottie" @@ Ewww! I think they could have picked almost anyone else from BB8 and would have done better...

Danny Bonaduce is kind of slimy himself.

thanks for that link, Sydney!
I loved the pictures. I also saw Erika and Yau..weird. Dick and Elvira...that was good too.
Amber had on a baby doll dress again....not a good look for her.
Jackie Warner looked good, although I don't like that Rebecca. I was happy to see Anthony from Top Hair Stylist (or whatever it was called), I liked him.
You think Daniele would have dressed up her Dad and boyfriend.
