Off Topic - That Was the Week It Was - August 15, 2010

It's Sunday morning, time to reflect back on the past week in words and photographs I've taken. If you're looking for Big Brother live feeds reports, a new one will be up a bit later this morning.

Like much of this summer, the week got off to a hot and humid start. This weather has really taken its toll on not only me, but on the grass and trees, too. Everything is so dry here. In the early spring we were saying, "Watch, we'll have drought conditions in the summer!" After an overabundance of rain at winter's end and into the spring, here we are with water usage restrictions in many parts of the state (New Jersey).

The last few days turned into great "open the windows and let the breezes in" weather. My cat Vincent loves to sit in the open windows (with screens, naturally!) and watch the action below. Plus, I'd rather have fresh air instead of air conditioned stale air any day. On the down side, because I had my windows open, last night the noise from my Riff-Raff neighbors annoyed me. Some people have no consideration for others. There is an intercom system. People have phones. You do NOT repeatedly pull up outside a building and SHOUT to get someone to let you in the building -- especially between the hours of 11 PM and 2:30 AM. I would have called the police but I figured by the time they got here, the jerks wouldn't be in the parking lot anymore.

Mind you, not all of my neighbors are like Riff-Raff. They're the only ones with kids running wild in the hallway and all kinds of noise these days. One of these days their door will break between the slamming of it and the pounding on it. The receiver for the bank has already put out several eviction notices. I hope the bunch in that apartment are next. Apparently they're very strict with the rent payments. One of the women from another floor complained to me "two days late and I got an eviction notice." I don't know. I mail my payment before the first each month so they have it by the first. Supposedly we have a grace period until the 5th to get it in.

For those who don't read my Facebook page, here's a video of a local rock group about the city in which I live, Plainfield, NJ. Although they used a photo of mine (along with some others from the 2009 library photo exhibition) without credit, it cracks me up. Thanks to local blogger Bernice for the link!

As you can tell, my week has been somewhat uneventful. Oh, well. Here are some of the photos I've taken during the week - clicking on an image will open it larger in a new window:

Urban Blight

This is detail of the deteriorating bricks of a building located on North Street near the Plainfield Train Station. It looks like one day this building will just crumble to the ground on its own. Since the rear is accessible to vagrants, this poses a danger to the surrounding inhabited buildings. Perhaps a plan should be enacted before it becomes yet another "emergency" with the city paying impromptu humongous fees to have it taken down ...?

Truck on the tracks!

I know the quality of this photo isn't great -- it was taken out of a dirty train window. I've been riding the train for a good five years now and last week was the first time I've spotted this. This NJT truck is actually driving ON the tracks with some kind of platform doohickey thingee (technical term) under it. Kewl!

On the early morning train
With a coffee in my hand
And an achin' in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home
And I miss my loved bed so
On the early morning train
With only work to go ...

My apologies to Gordon Lightfoot -- "Early Morning Rain"

"If you walk with Jesus ...

... he's gonna save your soul, gotta keep the devil way down in the hole." - Tom Waits, "Way Down in the Hole"

The Latina Jesus Ladies continue to spread the word on the corner of Watchung Avenue and North Street in Plainfield. One little blue um ... bear (?) seems to pay rapt attention.

Oh, this is SO wrong!

How could they abandon him? How could they desert him near the busy city street? What kind of world is this? He thought his soul was saved!

Just waitin' on a train

But looking in the other direction. Plainfield Train Station.

The evening skies

I took this shot from the lot of Supremo Supermarket on Tuesday evening. The days are getting shorter. I just want them to get cooler!

Just what are those piñatas up to?

The piñatas over produce in Supremo seem to be mating. We'll know for sure if I return and there's a whole slew of piñatas running around!

Texas Weiners I

Watchung Avenue in Plainfield. I edited the photo to leave just the sign in color. I never heard of Texas Weiners until I moved to New Jersey. I didn't see any Texas Weiners when I visited Texas this past spring. Different Texas Weiners places are all over here in New Jersey. Not only that, but the correct spelling of "wiener" should be "i" before "e." Weird.

Hight Lights?

Where the fare increases went

NJ Transit is slowly replacing the between cities (not NYC commuter) buses with these fancy-schmancy new ones. Inside, they smell like new cars. They have two cameras inside -- one in the front by the door and driver, another all the way in the back with a DVR recording constantly. That is a great move. I often think that the bus drivers, alone dealing with drunks and fare-beaters, need some kind of "protection." True, the camera won't protect them per se, but it might make ne'er-do-wells have second thoughts before causing problems.

The buses also "speak." Each intersection is announced. Nifty keen. They don't rattle all over either. While I walk to the train in the mornings, I'll often take the bus home as it leaves me a block away from my apartment. My monthly train pass covers the bus trip, so it's no extra cost. I won't take it in the mornings to the train as I can't trust them to be on time. The train waits for no one. This is the bus I would take to my apartment. But I won't take it to Newark! The shot was taken at the intersection of Gavett Place and North Street in Plainfield.

As the crows sit

I watched them fly. They did NOT fly in a straight line thus debunking the myth of "as the crow flies." I wonder which one is Randall Flagg ...

The chicory continues to thrive

The grass is dying, but the chicory continues to be colorful and healthy. Plainfield Train Station.

Oh, pointy!

Monday's early morning sun

Over the Plainfield Train Station track lamps.

Same sun sans lamp lights

These photos were taken at about 6:30 AM on Monday morning and I didn't touch up the colors at all. Hot day ahead.

Eastern goldfinch munching a sunflower

The pack of goldfinches continue to hang around the neighborhood where the sunflowers are located. They like to take off when they see me take out the camera. Grr. The sunflowers themselves are starting to pass. East Front Street, Plainfield.

Are you going to feed me now?

Yes, Vincent. I've finished this. Let me get the poor starving cat his food.

How was your week?

Big Brother 12 - Live Feeds Saturday - August 14

Right off the bat, she fights with Ragan.

Lane is worried and hopes he has the votes to stay.

OMG -- Ragan and Rachel are at it again as I get this typed up. I want to send them both to their rooms. Here are today's happenings from inside that Big Brother House of Loud Louts:
  • Kathy told Brendon something must be up because neither Matt nor Britney seem worried (neither is playing for veto).
  • Britney's not worried because Brendon promised her that he won't put her on the block or backdoor her.
  • Matt, we know, isn't worried because if he goes on the block, he just has to pull out that Diamond Veto and choose his own replacement.
  • The PoV comp went down fairly early. Ragan won.
  • Of course, it was blocked to the feeds.
  • Matt told Lane it's best to try to get Brendon to put up Kathy or Britney and that he'll have the votes to stay.
  • Ragan told Britney he'd never turn on her or Matt.
  • Britney told Ragan that Brendon thinks Enzo is the saboteur because he doesn't try hard at comps.
  • That's not true. Yes, it's true that he doesn't try at comps. However, Brendon thinks LANE is the saboteur.
  • It doesn't matter because Ragan is soured on Brendon with the nomination after he said he wouldn't put him up. He said he won't believe anything Brendon ever has to say.
  • The feeds got blocked for about forty-five minutes and then ... ack. She's back.
  • Rachel apparently entered the house with her, "Hey! Hey! I'm back, bitches!"
  • I normally don't use that language.
  • She irks me so much. Her laugh is like chalk on a chalkboard.
  • Right away she started a fight with Ragan.
  • He's actually no better than her. I prefer Kathy's way -- just walk away.
  • Meow.
  • While Rachel is in the house for 24 hours, apparently Brendon is locked in Pandora's Box (or taken somewhere).
  • Rachel has instructions that she has to ask each houseguest questions.
  • She talked a bit about the jury house -- limited alcohol, television with DVDs (no TV reception) in every room, very peaceful.
  • In questioning Enzo, she asked him about the goodbye message, why they could never be on the same side.
  • Enzo told her that he's in an alliance with Brendon and Hayden right now.
  • Rachel bought all of Enzo's lies (I tell you, a great social game the guy has -- he just really needs to win something) and hopes he's in the final two with Brendon.
  • Then it was onto Matt. She told him his goodbye message was mean because he mentioned Las Vegas.
  • His was sexist and a bit cruel. But the Vegas bit wasn't the problem.
  • Rachel told Matt that Britney and Brendon are scared to get their hands dirty and take charge.
  • Nice way to throw her love under the bus, eh?
  • She told him that she respects his gameplay and knows it was just that -- gameplay, not personal.
  • She also told him that once others are in the jury house they can only talk BB when there are cameras on them, otherwise it's a taboo subject.
  • Kathy was up to bat next.
  • Crying, crying.
  • Rachel told her that everything is Ragan's fault -- he's the root of all evil in the house.
  • @@
  • Kathy told Rachel that she, Enzo and Hayden miss her.
  • Way to go, Kathy!
  • On the other hand, Kathy told Rachel that she heard Ragan and Matt making fun of her (Rachel) yesterday.
  • Not cool, Kathy.
  • Enzo and Hayden had their own little debriefing about what they'll say or not say to Rachel.
  • Then Rachel and Ragan got into a very juvenile cat fight which never seemed to end in the backyard.
  • Meow. Hiss!
  • Rachel got really upset that Ragan called her an ugly parrot face with pink hair.
  • I told you it was very juvenile.
  • Rachel made homophobic comments at him first.
  • I just want to throw a raccoon with its non-retractable claws on both of 'em to shut them up!
  • Rachel, all upset when she was as bad (if not worse) than him, went to the Diary Room.
  • It has quieted down a bit now.
  • At least for a while.

Kathy and Rachel hug ... while crying.

Big Brother 12 Live Feeds Bulletin

She's BAAAACK!

Sigh. Rachel has returned to the house, thankfully for only 24 hours.
Ragan won Power of Veto.

Details a bit later!

Big Brother 12 - Live Feeds Into Saturday Dawn - August 14

Hand down the pants
Hand down the pants
Lookin' like a weirdo
With your hand down the pants

Why does he do that? Why did that creepy Adam do that in a previous season? Why would you do that in public ALL THE TIME?

Well, I revealed Brendon's nominees (Lane and Ragan) in my last report. Here's what's gone down since then in that Big Brother House of Sappy Saboteurs:
  • Just before the feeds were blocked for the PoV players pick, Brendon told Lane that Ragan's the target.
  • He said that if Ragan wins PoV, he'll backdoor either Matt or Britney.
  • He has already promised Britney he wouldn't backdoor her.
  • He doesn't know that Matt has the Diamond Power of Veto which he probably won't use unless he needs to save himself on the block.
  • After the feeds returned, we found out that Lane got Houseguest's Choice. He chose Hayden instead of Britney (the current PoV Queen).
  • Ragan is very upset. In talking with Matt, he claimed there is no winning in the situation because if he wins and takes himself off the block, Matt will go up.
  • Matt told him to go ahead and win -- he (Matt) knows he has the votes to stay and isn't worried.
  • Nope, Matt's not worried at all.
  • Kathy and Enzo are the other two playing.
  • Matt told Ragan he's only really playing against three guys -- Brendon, Lane and Hayden.
  • Of course, I should note that Lane's performance in comps isn't any better than Enzo's. Both guys lose just as much as Kathy, but she has trouble from the start -- they just can't finish the job.
  • Ragan fussed, moaned and cried to the point where I had to keep switching cams because I was tired of his drama.
  • Ragan says that if he doesn't win PoV, he might as well go ahead and eat. He's sure he's going home and a penalty nomination wouldn't matter or doesn't apply.
  • The Brigade boys are starting to worry about Matt because he's being so helpful to Ragan, being his confidant and helping him to study quiz questions.
  • Ragan says he's almost as worried about being stuck alone with Rachel for a week as he is of the eviction itself.
  • Now, that might be worth crying about!
  • Ragan cried some more.
  • The others kept studying.
  • But since they've been on indoor lockdown so long, I doubt PoV will be a straight quiz.
  • Brendon, for the most part, has been keeping to himself.
  • Hayden and Enzo, who had seemed like they might cross over to the Brendon Train, are now down on him once again.
  • Everyone is saying that they're not likely to keep in touch with Brendon after they get out.
  • Enzo, Matt and Hayden all think that Ragan needs to go before Kathy.
  • But they also think they need to get Kathy out before the numbers dwindle down.
  • Enzo told Hayden how beautiful his wife is and how he wants to have more children.
  • Aw.
  • They're all asleep as I get this posted.

Big Brother 12 - Friday Live Feeds - August 13

Nominations Today ...
... but not until after the saboteur!

So, Brendon's reign of terror has begun. Unfortunately, there's not as much action as I had hoped. Here are today's happenings from inside the Big Brother House of Revenge Gone Soft:
  • Ragan talked to Brendon. No one mispronounced "neanderthal." The word didn't even come up.
  • Instead, Ragan told his life story of being picked on and being an outcast.
  • @@
  • Brendon's heartstrings were tugged. Oh geez. Everything's gone all namby-pamby betwixt the two. They apologized to each other.
  • Ragan told Brendon only one person was suggesting they vote out Brendon (as per his wishes) instead of Rachel last week.
  • He told him it was Enzo (which is true).
  • Ragan told him he would work with him and help further him in the game.
  • Brendon bought what he was selling.
  • Britney thinks everyone should vote the way the house wants, not what Brendon wants.
  • Of course, she's sure that she will be his main target.
  • Brendon told Kathy she's safe and he won't put her on the block.
  • He told her he appreciates she's always been there for people who need someone.
  • Of course, he told Enzo or Hayden (can't remember which) last night that getting rid of Kathy would be a waste of an HOH.
  • Britney and Brendon talked. He said Rachel always defended her and he's only starting to realize why.
  • He apologized to her.
  • Man, is he working the crowd. It's too bad that he hooked up with Rachel in the beginning. Although I think he's very controlling in these conversations, he puts on those puppy dog eyes and sounds oh-so-sincere.
  • Britney told him that everyone talked last minute and all decided to keep him in the house then.
  • That contradicts what Ragan said. Ragan told him the truth.
  • Brendon told her that he hates floaters.
  • Although Britney doesn't seem to have any alliance beside Lane, she's shown herself to be a competitor by winning vetos.
  • Then he said he'd like to be in the final three with her and Matt.
  • Um. Okay.
  • Lane was next. Remember, Brendon is sure that Lane is the saboteur.
  • Lane told Brendon that he didn't think Brendon's wild throwing of the ball in POV was unsportsman-like.
  • Oh, geez. Lane has fallen under the spell!
  • Lane hinted that he'd like Britney to be targeted, but didn't come out and say it.
  • Ragan remembers that it's the anniversary of Chima's meltdown.
  • Boy, he does know the BB history!
  • After an outdoor lockdown, there were escargot and eggplant.
  • Poor Britney, Matt and Ragan. Well, eggplant is doable, I guess.
  • Enzo told Lane he doesn't want to go up and talk to Brendon.
  • But he went.
  • It's clear that Brendon really likes Enzo.
  • But he thinks he's a slacker and needs to step up his game -- start winning something ... anything!
  • It was like a coach pep talking a wayward athlete.
  • However, it's clear that he has no intention of putting Enzo on the block.
  • Enzo acted sincere throughout.
  • As sincere as you can act with a Bayonne accent, anyway.
  • Brendon told Hayden that he's worried because Enzo never fights to win comps.
  • He also said that Lane's never been on the block and he'd like to shake things up a bit.
  • Hayden, like all of the Brigade, tries to push for Britney and Ragan nominations, not Lane.
  • Brendon said he's really leaning towards a Lane/Britney nom.
  • Now, WE know in that scenario, Britney will go unless she wins POV.
  • Hayden knows it, too.
  • Heck, Brendon can probably guess it.
  • Oh! Oh! Saboteur!
  • The latest (blocked to the feeds) was that there is a male/female relationship in the house prior to the start of the game.
  • Both Britney and Kathy vehemently deny any such relationship and they're the only two women presently in the house.
  • But then again, Brendon knows the saboteur lied about him before.
  • Okay, no one's buying it.
  • They all think the saboteur is just making stuff up.
  • They're right. And Ragan is making stupid decisions which task he undertakes and the messages he's sending.
  • The hamsters can see it's been going from messing with one of them to another to another.
  • Matt is sure it's BB.
  • Britney doesn't think there are any Jewish people in Arkansas.
  • Oh my.
  • She lives in a way different world than I do.
  • Brendon decided he would put Lane and Britney on the block.
  • Then he decided to tell them.
  • He told Matt first. Shh ... it's a secret.
  • Matt ran and told Hayden.
  • Then he told Britney who took it well, but then went crying to Ragan and Matt.
  • Then Brendon got called to the Diary Room.
  • OOPS! He's not allowed to warn them ahead of time point blank like that!
  • So he talked to Britney again.
  • She kept telling him how much she wanted to stay in the house and that she wouldn't target him.
  • He seemed to believe her and told her that she might have changed his mind.
  • Then again, he might be lying!
  • He never got the chance to tell Lane that he's going up as they put up trivia and blocked the feeds.
  • I've been trying to wait it out, but I think I'll get this posted.
  • I'll update the bottom of this (under this line) when they finally come back and I find out who's on the block.
NOMINATIONS ARE IN -- Britney must have changed Brendon's mind when they talked. Lane is on the block with Ragan.
