Off Topic - That Was the Week It Was 12/13/09

Another Sunday is here, another trip through a bit of what I've seen in both photographs I've taken and words. The weather this past week didn't cooperate for a lot of photo-taking. It was either gusty winds, rain, or bitter cold. Or, at times, a mix of the three. Nothing incredibly exciting happened to me this week. It was work as usual and life as usual.

I'd like to wish everyone out there a happy Chanukah. I realize it started Friday evening and I'm a bit late. But it's still on and will be for most of the week. Plenty of time to bring out the dreidel! It's hard to believe as I type this up that winter is only eight days away.

On the home front, they put in new fire extinguishers (the old ones had service tags dating back to 2005), the front door to the building now latches (thus locking), and yesterday in the bitter cold early Saturday morning wind, there were some men painting the fire escapes black. That would be as in -- "I see a rusty fire escape, I want to paint it black." Believe it or not, painting the fire escapes is some kind of code issue. I recall they painted them around the time the building was sold some years back. Thankfully the trash is still being picked up and the water remains on. They never did the leaves in the parking lot, so now the leaves are molded into huge dense lumps due to cars driving over them.

At least my own apartment is warm and cozy. It comes with a cat, too! It's supposed to get a bit warmer here today but the rain will start. Since I'm still working on that AOL bios project (which now has an extended deadline to the end of the month), I will be inside most of the day. No Amazing Race tonight, which seems very weird. I haven't looked at the TV schedule. But if there's nothing which interests me, I have new screeners of The Closer, Leverage, and Men of a Certain Age which I haven't had time to watch.

Anyway, onto my week --

NJ Transit sexist advertising

Now, this is just silly on all levels. Three people cannot fit out a train door. If you're taking a step down to the platform and it's not a low platform (which is more the height of a tractor trailer cab), your platform has sunk. Raised platforms are flush with the train. Third, it's rare you see women with stiletto heels on trains and subways. Well, there could be some hookers, I guess. But most commuting women tend to wear sneakers or flat walking shoes, perhaps carrying heels in their bags. Commuting by train often includes some walking time, too.

All of the trains coming through here now are the double-deckers. In the handicapped/bike and don't want to climb stairs seating the other day, there was a mother and her toddler. She did a fist bump with the kid and, as I passed, he held out his fist to me. Okay, fist bump. But what I started was priceless -- every single passenger after me took a moment to give the kid a fist bump as they went by. You don't know how thrilled that toddler was!

Well, Well, Well ...

While I haven't seen Roofus up on his roofs, he is still frequenting the old ex-Budget Car Rental place. Although it was sold to developers, someone (the elderly man who used to run it, most likely) is still coming by leaving fresh food and water. That's a combination of frost and dirty windows you see. I took this yesterday morning when it was way cold.

Uh-oh

I tell you ... the birds are conspiring to overthrow the human race. I took this shot of a sea gull recruiting some crows for the cause.

When will people learn?

They should know they shouldn't sleep on the train near me! This guy gets on at my station in Plainfield and is out like a light within two minutes every day. In his favor, he has a hat and something between his head and the window. It irks me to no end to see hair product all over the windows. If I want to take a shot of something out of the train, it's often worse than the ex-Budget Rental Car!

Plainfield (NJ) Christmas Windows

I haven't had a chance to go into the city for the windows yet this year. But, one day after work, I decided to walk a few blocks to see the town's Christmas tree and get some shots. I know they had a tree-lighting gala, but the tree was dark when I got there. So, I shot the windows of an antique store on Watching Avenue. It's an odd conglomeration of things, but what do you expect from an antique store?

He hasn't a leg to stand on!

Another window in the antique shop. Maybe he should ask Santa for the rest of his body.

Ohhh ... new NJ Transit ticket machines!

How exciting! These machines were installed after I bought my monthly train pass. They're bright with bigger screens. At the end of the month, I'll see how easy they are to use. Right now I see no big advantage except to the conductors. There's a scrolling marquee on each machine which says if the machine is in service (taking all payment types) or credit/debit only. It can be seen from the platform. The old machines just had a tiny green or red light and green didn't necessarily mean it's working. You see, if the conductor sees working machines, they'll charge a five-dollar surcharge even for a $1.75 fare if you buy the ticket on the train. It doesn't affect me as I always get a monthly pass and the conductors all know me anyway.

Santa Claws is coming to town!

Oh, this is so wrong. Vincent is probably thinking, "Hey, I didn't sign up for this!" I do have a plan, though. We need another photo session.

My commute

I see exciting scenery like this while riding the train to work. The changes can be interesting. In the more rural areas, I can now see the deer because the leaves are down. I've watched homeless go in and out the back of an old building in Bound Brook for years. This past week, they tore down the Bolmer Building. Oh, goody. Now I can see the Pillars of Fire building so much better! I've seen how messy and what odd things people put in their yards. And, on the cooler side, ever since I've ridden the train, every season, someone leaves a ton of huge bread crumbs near this little river which dumps into the Raritan River. Geese, ducks, and birds all gather daily for the feast. (They're probably planning the overthrow of humanity while chomping down.)

Blast from the past

Since I really don't have any artsy photos this week, I'm including this "self-portrait over New York City" I took a few years back. A friend of mine was visiting the city. I took this from her room on the 45th floor of the Millenium Hilton in lower Manhattan (nearby the WTC site). One bad thing about living close to the city is I don't really know the hotels unless a friend is visiting. If I'm stuck in the city overnight, it means I was out too late and missed the last train home. In that case, I wait out the two hours or so in Penn Station waiting for the first train of the morning. The trains stop running from about 2 AM until 5 AM although the station remains opens and even has a comfy place for ticketed passengers. I won't, can't, refuse to pay the over $550 a night fee for the room I took this picture from!

Years and years ago (back when I lived in CT), I got stuck at Grand Central Station overnight. Now, they close overnight. But the Metro North cops took pity on me and let me stay rather than roam the streets. So I was locked in with cleaning crews and cops throwing firecrackers at each other. One cop even brought me coffee.

Plainfield Train Station at sunset

These lamps always hook me.

Halal Meats, Gyros, and Falafel Sandwiches

This is on Somerset Street in North Plainfield, just outside of Plainfield. Yes, we're the Plainfields -- in three different counties. North Plainfield is Somerset, Plainfield is Union, and South Plainfield is Middlesex. I was all kinds of confused when I moved here.

Windows and lack thereof

These are the windows on an old factory building on North Street in Plainfield. Some are replaced with metal, some are broken. But you know me. I like to photograph the decrepit. If I were thirty years younger (and much more daring and foolish), I'd go for urban exploring -- taking illegal trespassing photo trips through abandoned buildings.

That's about it. How was your week?

The Amazing Race 15 - Season Finale Blog Party Post

Oh my ... what a shocker ... the finale is going to actually air on time here tonight! I'm a bit disappointed that it's only an hour as I'd like to see Phil interview the teams, but I'll take what I can get. I love the show so much!

As it airs here on the East Coast, I'll update any major happenings in this entry. However, the real fun (and most of the information) will be in the comments. Everyone is welcome to join in. My actual show review will be posted over on TV Squad sometime late tonight.

Megan and Cheyne just won The Amazing Race. Sam and Dan second.

That Was the Week It Was - 12/06/09

It's Sunday once again. Don't these weeks go by way too fast? Of course, since it's Sunday, it's a time to reflect on the week gone by in words and photos I've taken. Later tonight, please stop by for the big Amazing Race season finale blog party post. I should have no problems with the new computer.

That was my big happening this week -- for the first time, missing a review deadline on TV Squad, not showing up here. Argh. Of all times for my computer to crash ... just before Survivor! A new computer wasn't really in my budget. But to not get one would mean the big check from the bios writing project would go kerflooey. I really had no choice.

The computer itself? It's nice and I'm getting settled in. It's a Dell. I took their little cowprint Gateway wallpaper down first thing and put up a photo of mine. It has Windows 7 which doesn't seem all that different from Vista. So, it's familiar enough for me to move on in. Had this been a planned purchase, I would have scoured the web for the best deal. But it does have 750 GB of storage. Let's see if it lasts long enough for me to fill it up!

Then there was a mouse. I know I ignored my downstairs neighbor when he knocked on my door twice late in the evening a few nights before. I'm sorry, but once I'm in my bedclothes, I don't answer the door for anyone, including him. I knew I didn't flood anything, so I ignored him. I figured he wanted to borrow something or get a cigarette. I heard his door close (weird things you hear from the floor above and below). I rarely hear any noise from down there, but I always hear him coming and going. I just don't know which it is -- coming or going.

He must have wanted to tell me he heard scratching in the wall. This happened three years ago just about this time of year. Teaser got that mouse. Now Vincent has a notch in his um ... tail? Poor deceased mouse. But he picked the wrong apartment to emerge. After all, I have Jaws of Death living here.

Other than the eventful Thursday evening, I worked a lot. I slept not enough. I ate more than I should. And I took photos as I traveled about. Clicking on an image will open it larger in a new window.

Plainfield (NJ) YMCA

This building is way cool. And I thought it needed to be in sepia with old image edges. Yeah, I edited its edges. East Front Street.

Deck the Halls and all that ...

They usually put lights up in that big pine tree (fir? whatever) on the left. I like these quirky Victorian style homes. East Front Street, Plainfield.

Tested positive for performance enhancing? Oh no!

The NJ Transit cop must be wondering if that's a crime has been committed on NJ Transit property. This was at the Dunellen Train Station. I've noticed more transit cops around. But are they ever around when someone is acting up on the train? Nope.

Jaws of Death

Jaws, Paws, and Claws of Death -- Vincent is a walking (ex)terminator. According to him, "Best toy EVER!"

The Bread Man

America's Bakery delivers the rolls. And a dude rides his bike on the sidewalk which irks me to no end as a pedestrian. Not allowed, dude! North Street, Plainfield.

The Other Bread Man

It used to be every Saturday, now it seems down to every other Saturday. This man sets up his tables and gives free bread to folks. We're talking loaves, buns, rolls, you name it. People wait in line. One person I know told me I could get some as she talked to me when I was passing by. But I figure I can pay for my bread ... let folks who need it more than me take it. I don't know where the bread comes from. I do know it's been going on for the four years I've been walking through there on Saturdays. Church Street, Plainfield, NJ.

Sigh. Still no Roofus.

I'm beginning to think that his access to the roofs might have changed as the back of the condemned building deteriorates. Note that three of the four apartments are vacant. Only where the woman looks out the window (in previous photos) is occupied. Those apartments go through this every year. Seasonal laborers tend to live in them and move once winter knocks on the door. North Street, Plainfield.

I like to photograph decrepit things

It's almost time for the Super Bowl again! East Second Street, Plainfield.

View from my window

This is the squirrel nest I mentioned a while back -- the one I watched them build. Now that the leaves are down, it's entertainment for Vincent. Oh heck, it's entertainment for me, too. As long as they don't start throwing wild parties and make me have to call the cops, they're cool neighbors.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

And, so it did. It snowed like it was a blizzard going on for a while. But it only stuck to cars, trees, and lawns. The ground is still too warm for snow to stick around long right now. Saturday night in New Jersey.

The Latino Jesus Men

Yes, it's not just the Jesus Ladies, the men are in the act, too. North Street, Plainfield. And yes ... I did some creative editing. I did it because the focus was blurry, so I kind of made it something else to cover a bad photo.

Look what I found!

It's that 1923 fire engine I photographed back at the Fire Safety Fair some time back. It's in an empty closed (yet secure) car dealership garage. There's also some big military kind of vehicle in there. The image isn't the best because I was taking it through a grungy window.

Vision

I liked the neon eyeglasses and the reflection of the other buildings in the window. East Second Street, Plainfield.

Moon over Presbyterian

The moon was full earlier this week and hanging out in the morning over the Presbyterian Church on East Front Street in Plainfield, NJ.

Jersey Boys

Kids heading into the city (NYC) for the evening. Bridgewater Train Station.

The birds are getting bigger

You know that I've mentioned how the birds are planning to overthrow mankind. Now the big guns are arriving. Sorry he's so far to the left, but he refused to fly still for me. A hawk in Bridgewater, NJ.

Oh, Plainfield Parking Authority?

Is there any time left on this meter? Tow it on outta here! I still don't get this piling the leaves in the streets bit in New Jersey. By the time they scoop 'em up, there could be dead bodies under there! Plus, they take up parking spaces.

After the storm

A wild storm went on all night as a cold front arrived earlier this week. This is what it looked like just after sunrise as the fair weather moved in. Plainfield, NJ. Looking at East Second Street homes via East Front Street.

If I flatten my butt, she won't see me.

But I did.

We refuse to leave(s)

Some leaves just don't think they should give it up for the winter.

Stripped

There are two bikes (well, kind of sort of) in this condition parked on the north side of the Plainfield Train Station. Somehow I doubt they were parked and locked in this condition. Unlike the Bridgewater deconstruction, I didn't see these happen slowly piece by piece. Just WHAM -- two bike frames hanging by chains. I declare this one my picture of the week. I like the way it turned out.

So, how was your week?

I'm Alive

My apologies for last night. I was so glad that Sydney called me so I could let you know I was okay. My computer is dead, my ex-computer doesn't want to work despite me working hours trying to fix it. With the writing project deadline for AOL, I can't afford the time for the computer to sit in the shop. So, now ... a few hundred dollars later, I have a new cheapest computer I could find without going online to look for bargains. And, I'm dead tired.

Oh. And Vincent shall be known as Jaws/Paws/Claws of Death from now on. I couldn't believe a real mouse got in my apartment just as my computer died and Survivor was starting last night. It's too bad the mouse had to die, but he chose the wrong apartment, and Vincent had a great old time ... until mean Jackie took the mouse away.

I never did write up the review for the show on TV Squad. It's too late now. And, after getting less than two hours sleep last night, working all day, hooking this computer up, I'm ready for bed.

Thanks again everybody for your concern. I'm alive. Vincent's alive. The computer is dead. The mouse is dead. The budget is dead.

The Amazing Race - 11/29/09 Episode Blog Party Post

I think the show is delayed slightly here -- I wasn't watching 60 Minutes, so I'm not sure.

As it airs here on the East Coast, I'll update any major happenings in this entry. However, the real fun (and most of the information) will be in the comments. Everyone is welcome to join in. My actual show review will be posted over on TV Squad sometime late tonight.

Okay, 8:04 PM ET and we're starting.

Brian and Ericka got through their (easy) speed bump and passed out the slowest team (Globetrotters) at a roadblock. The Globetrotters chose to take a four-hour penalty in lieu of completing the roadblock. Big Easy couldn't unscramble five letters to spell "Franz."

Pit Stop
1. Megan and Cheyne - each won a 52" TV
2. Sam and Dan
3. Brian and Ericka

Instead of doing the next task, the Globetrotters were sent to the Pit Stop where they got Philiminated.

Off Topic - That Was the Week It Was 11/29/09

It's Sunday morning. I hope you're having a pleasant and peaceful one. Of course, since it is Sunday, it's time for my off topic look back on the week past in words and photographs I've taken. On the whole, my week was a bit uneventful -- a shortened work week yet the time off from my day job ended up being consumed by a writing project. The weather here this week ranged from raw and rainy to high wind warnings. Today looks like it will be nice, but the temperature is 32 out there as I get this written.

I worked on Friday, thus didn't take part in any of the madness known as Black Friday shopping. I'm more of the type who will deal with the crowds on Cyber Monday. Virtual crowds are much less intimidating. I've never shopped on Black Friday. It wasn't a family tradition (we always went to visit our cousins that day) and I don't have a crowd of people to buy gifts for, nor any high ticket purchases planned. Did you shop on Friday?

Vincent and I had a nice quiet Thanksgiving day. We lazed about. I played my old Arlo Guthrie vinyl with "Alice's Restaurant" on it and, taking a break from writing, watched my DVD of Pieces of April. Both are holiday-themed. The Guthrie tune goes back to my teens when my brothers and I would play it and life was just a bit wilder. I cooked myself up a nice little feast and enjoyed the day. I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving.

Without further ado, it's onto the photos I've taken this week. Clicking on an image will open it larger in a new window.

Vincent

I'm thankful he's in my life. I still miss Scherzo. But he's SO different from any cat ever in my life before. From the shoulder napping to ripping apart cardboard with his teeth like a caveman chowing down, he's a nut. He's also the best cat I've ever had with the camera. Scherzo used to close her eyes tight even when I wasn't using the flash. Teaser was good. But Vincent goes right into the modeling daze. I'm sure Vincent thanks all of his aunts out there. He seems very happy.

Look! The spaceships!

Last week I had a shot of the parking lot lights you see in the background here. This is as I walk to the Bridgewater Train Station (NJ) to get my ride home.

Urban Christmas

A lighted Christmas tree peeks out the window of an otherwise darkened apartment building pre-dawn. This is on North Avenue in Plainfield, NJ.

Mi Ranchito II

I edited this one for the mix of black and white and color. I only wish they had the gate on the left all the way up. This restaurant does a good business from pre-dawn into the evening.

Too Much Turkey!

Er, he did have some turkey cat food in honor of the day. Vincent sleeps on his back a lot. Knowing cats as I do, that's a sign that he feels safe by leaving his tummy vulnerable.

Does that star-spangled banner yet wave?

Why, yes it does. And now they seem to have sprouted flags amongst the holiday decorations up and down the length of the business district on East Front Street in Plainfield. This is pre-dawn, not evening.

Neon Rainbow

"The city lights, the pretty lights. They can warm the coldest nights." - 'Neon Rainbow' by the Boxtops. Well, again this is really pre-dawn. But the colors of the neon signs made me think of the song.

Best Donuts on Earth

I've been a regular customer of the Plainfield Donut Shop for several years now. They're also a luncheonette, but I'm a morning customer not usually wandering around for the lunch rush. Owned by Greek-American proprietors, Maria and Tom, the service is top-rate and friendly, the donuts are super-fresh, and the prices are very reasonable. I brought a dozen donuts to work on Friday and folks loved 'em!

Often there's a line right out the door during the morning rush. Yet Maria, almost an Energizer bunny, keeps things moving and the wait is never long. The breakfasts are also tasty, filling, and not too hard on the wallet. There is an ambiance with the morning regulars and staff which make it the Cheers of the donut world.

Bikes at Night

Some folks ride their bikes to the Plainfield Train Station. If they're taking off-peak trains (not in or out of NYC at rush hours), they can bring the bikes on the trains. However, rush hour trains are just too crowded for that practice.

East Side

Heh, the next Plainfield Library Photo Contest theme is "East Side, West Side, All Around the Town." I was on the east side (East Front Street) and noticed this "East Side" scrawled into the dirt on the hood of a U-Haul truck which is for sale. I did not scrawl it it. I don't want dirty fingers! Now, if they ever want to sell the truck, they really should wash it, don't you think? And, no ... it's not going to be one of my entries next year.

NOW! And SAVE!

This sign is in the window of Pete's Fish Market on East Second Street in Plainfield, another business I frequent on and off. Fresh fish, reasonable prices. But what I'm wondering about is the "live eels" on the sign. Huh? Are live eels a holiday fare? What do you do with them? Raise them as pets? Throw them at guests you want to leave and yell, "Snake!"?

Threatening skies at sunset ... through chainlink

Another man vs. nature kind of thing. This photo didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to, yet I wanted to share. Bridgewater, NJ.

Fashion Statement

Oh yes, I definitely messed with editing this shot. I left the one guy in color while everything else is black and white. I also played a bit with the black and white to make it a bit grainy. The result is that it looks like the fashion plate (ahem) dude is walking by a poster or something. Well, at least to me, it does. North Street, Plainfield, NJ.

Plainfield Main Train Station at Night

The station itself is only open from about five in the morning until noon. I rarely go inside and usually get my monthly train pass from the machines on the platform. My monthly train pass also allows me to ride the buses for a certain amount of zones. All in all, it's a bargain when you consider the cost of owning, maintaining, and paying insurance on a car in New Jersey. Plus, since becoming a pedestrian walking around with digital cameras, I've found photo opportunities around every corner in addition to the train friends, business owner friends, and just plain old pleasant commutes not dealing with NJ traffic.

Only 10 MNUTES!

Misspelled signs are always a favorite of mine. One of these days I'll have to go up Somerset Street in North Plainfield to see if the chicken place still has a sign which reads "foul." As a person who used to handpaint signs back in the 70s for extra cash, misspelling a word on a sign was one of my biggest fears. Nowadays, computers have taken over the business.

Fast Firetruck

This is at the corner of Watchung Avenue and East Fourth Street in Plainfield. It was Monday night after I got out of work. Something was happening. I saw at least four fire engines and two low-flying helicopters. Yet there was nothing on the news or in the papers. I dunno.

Thanksgiving Eve

It was rainy, misty, and drizzling in the start of the business district on Wednesday. While I'm not all that keen on rain if I'm out in it, I love the reflections it makes for photos. East Front Street in Plainfield.

Looking the Other Way

I think this is my photo of the week. I like the way it turned out -- almost like a painting when you enlarge it. East Front Street in Plainfield.

EEK! Vincent's EYES!

No, Vincent doesn't have two different-colored eyes. That is indeed a gene-induced thing in white cats, as is deafness. But he's not really a white cat as he has the gray on his head and tail. And, his eyes are green. This is the reflection of his pupils with the flash. I didn't edit the colors at all.

How was your week?

Survivor Samoa - Thanksgiving Day Episode Blog Party Post

The show is beginning here on the East Coast. Tonight's show is the clips show with "exciting unseen before footage." You know how that goes. Any real action here will be in the comments section! Please feel free to join in with your thoughts while having fun with friends. Late tonight (or early tomorrow) my show review will be posted on TV Squad.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Zoetawny made us this fine holiday graphic and, of course, I'm so thankful that she takes the time to do these for us. (She rocks, y'know!)

I'm thankful for many things, but this blog community just might top the list. The regular readers/commenters are spread across the country. But we've become friends just as much as if we lived around the corner from each other. I want to thank everyone who gathers here for your friendship and kindnesses. You all rock!

I'll be spending a large portion of the day trying to get caught up with that AOL bios writing project so that I finish it before the deadline (12/15). I'll take the time to have a mini-feast, of course. Over on TV Squad, there is an article I wrote up with things I'm thankful for as they regard to television. I think one of the main things I'me grateful for relating to television is that it's the reason behind the blog and all of the resulting friendships with great folks! Bless you!

Uh-oh. I just heard something on the television about kids in a school going around kicking red-headed children and it got out of hand. Gee, sounds like my school days!

Seize the day!

The Amazing Race - 11/22/09 Episode Blog Party Post

Surprise, surprise ... the show has been delayed by football here in the NYC viewing area. 60 Minutes started about 30 minutes late, so we can expect TAR at about 8:30-ish PM ET.

As it airs here on the East Coast, I'll update any major happenings in this entry. However, the real fun (and most of the information) will be in the comments. Everyone is welcome to join in. My actual show review will be posted over on
TV Squad sometime late tonight.

Pit Stop Order
1. Megan and Cheyne - trip to Hawaii
2. Sam and Dan
3. Flight Time and Big Easy
4. Brian and Ericka -- Non-Philimination, so they're still in it!
