TV Newsy Bits - Saturday, April 7, 2007

Jackie's TV Newsy Bits Is anyone out there watching Raines? I caught the show last night and even though I'm not really all that into the "ghost genre" in TV shows as of late, I found it quirky and fun. I'll be checking it out again.

On Thursday night I watched the second season opener of The Wire on BET (10 PM). I'm a bit disappointed that the network went from 90 minutes to 60 minutes with the show. I know they had added airing time to air more (annoying) commercials, but now I can't help but wonder what bits of the show may be cut. Sigh... one of these days when it's in my budget, I guess I'll have to spring for the DVD of the show.

In other TV Newsy Bits:
  • Celebrity Spider has mild spoilers for the next episode of Survivor 14: Fiji. No boot news, but it sounds like it's going to be interesting!
  • RNO (Reality News Online) has transcribed recent Survivor castaway Lisi's appearance on The Early Show. What's interesting is that she contradicts some of what she said in an interview with RNO. Dang, she's still fickle, eh? I'm so glad she got the boot.
  • It will be a Latin-themed week this week on American Idol as Jennifer Lopez coaches the contestants. Maybe Sanjaya will do the macarena? Eek.
  • Celebrity Spider (great site that it is) has a blurb about the next Lost episode. Who comes down with a life-threatening disease?
  • Reality TV World has an interview with Blakeney Rowe about her brief experience on The Bachelor.

I have tried to like Raines. I like the ghost genre and Jeff Goldblum is smart and an excellent actor. It just doesn't work for me.

Possible reasons:

I just don't like Jeff Goldblum, though I recognize his quality.

He mumbles at times, which I hate on a TV show.

The whole "it's not really a ghost" thing makes me crazy. They clearly want to draw that audience and there's little difference between his figments and the ghosts. (The ghosts in the other shows are often as confused as his figments.) They are part of a genre and simultaneously turning their noses up.

The sharp repartee isn't all that original.

Hi Jackie!

I actually caught the first episode of Raines online... It ended, and I was a bit ambivalent. I didn't "not like it", but I am not sure I loved it enough to add to an already overflowing plate of "my must see TV". I will probably check out another episode or two online, as it is convenient and I can catch them when I have time. I will be interested to hear what you think after a few eps.

Regarding Lisi and Survivor...
She is just wild!! Off and on like a faucet! They definitely made a great move by voting her off. Her lack of commitment to learn the dance and try to win the reward was painful to watch. And she is so confused, she can't even keep her story straight between interviews! Yikes!

Blakeney from The Batchelor was hysterical!! When she fell off the stool, I laughed until I cried! She was someone you would want at your party to keep things livened up, so to speak! I think she was absolutely correct, in that she seemed a bit wild and free, and he seems soooo nice and relatively conservative. Didn't see a match there, so I am thrilled she went home and reconnected with someone special to her! He is saying that "he is in love!", so I hope he found a connection. Those things rarely last, but there have certainly been a few that have made it.

I caught the link above your blog for the petition to kick S off American Idol. That is funny! And it would be great if it got the attention of someone whose opinion counts at AI! Not counting on it, but you just never know!!

Have a great weekend, and I hope you are back to feeling great by now!

Raines is a show that I find myself enjoying. In part that's because I like Jeff Goldblum but in part it's because I really dislike the whole "supernatural detective" genre that has sprung up in the past few years with Medium and Ghost Whisperer. Let's face it, if you were confronted with Allison or Melinda, your first reaction would be that these people are crazy - Raines is convinced that he's crazy, which I find refreshing. The mumbling plays into this. The "ghosts" may be figments of his imagination but they're also his way of putting the identifying with the victims. This show isn't serious - it's not meant to be - but it fits into the "quirky cop" genre of a Columbo or a Monk and taken as such it's a fun ride.

Hi J--

Thanks for the Bachelor article, look forward to more as you find them. I thought after a few lackluster seasons that I'd watch this one's first ep and maybe not again. But it was kind of fresh and holds some promise... This guy has it all (though a bit straight). And from the preview edit of the season to come, it looks like there'll be some fierce drama to cackle. I'm at least watching next Monday, for now, hooked enough.

And yes, this girl fell off her chair but she was very obviously able to keep her champagne glass completely level as she took a very akward spill... The arm holding the glass was straight up in the air, yet it was twisted back behind her and above her and she didn't spill a drop! I wondered how she could have THAT kind of control and balance if she was so drunk as to fall, which is what was implied.

It might be a PR story to save her honor, but being a fair klutz in my time, I think that explains it... She WAS completely slurring in two segments of interviews however-- so there we are -- BUT when she fell with that drink, she was as coordinated as any Cirque du Soleil veretran.

Jackie I watch Raines. To me it is just another way at solving a crime.

Technically they are not ghosts, they are a figment of Raines imagination. Whenever he adds another piece to the crime puzzle he see the victim in that way, when he solves the crime, the victim disappears from his imagination. As you notice, the victim does not help Raines solve the murder. Whenever Raines is talking outloud different scenarios of the crime.

For example, with the last episode, he did not realize the victim was involved with drugs until Raines saw a bomb pipe and then he opened up a locker full of weed and he came across a lady who gets her supply from the victim. Then he thought the victim was a gun runner and he saw the victim holding a uzi. The different clues that Raines gather he pictures his victim in that scenario.

I like the show, it is different, but I agreed with the others, he does mumble a lot but that is Jeff Goldblum for you.
