Memories of a Meerkat - 'Meerkat Manor' - RIP Flower



I love Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet, but I hate it sometimes, too. I realize that they film the meerkats as they live out their lives and they won't interfere, but it's still hard when something happens to one of these critters.

We've lost Shakespeare and many others, but this was the toughest loss of all.

Flower, the matriarch of the meerkat family, was bitten by a cobra and died this past February although the news was just released this week. As a regular viewer of the show I became quite attached to this leader of the Whiskers -- I can only think that she was truly exceptional when it comes to meerkats and I'm very saddened by her passing.

Animal Planet has set up a website as a memoriam. It's amazing how many people have been touched by a single meerkat in the Kalahari Desert. If you have a chance to visit, the videos are definitely worth your time.

Goodbye, Flower. Rest in peace.

Jackie, I had left a comment last week about Flower and figured you had probably already heard about it. No one else commented at the time and I just removed it. You had mentioned how much you loved this show and I knew you probably felt bad about "losing" one of your favorites. So sorry, Jackie.

Growing up on a farm life and death are part of the circle, but still is hard to take.

The animal, meerkat, has always been a favorite of mine. So Animal Planet's, Meerkat Manor has had me as a viewer from program one. Give an critter a name and it becomes an attachment.

I always wondered what happened to Shakespeare as he was a brave-nurturing family member. Mitch is an exact copy of him.

Flower and Zaphod have passed on marvelous genes and hopefully the Manor will continue under new leadership. It will be interesting to see which of the roving cassanova's will become Rocket's partner. Hope she is as wise as her mother was.

I was surprised at how emotional I became when learning of her death.
Good luck to Rocket Dog and all the Whiskers.
I guess you could say Meerkat Manor is true reality TV.

It's always sad when a favortie character,be they human or animal,leaves you so unexpectedly.I've only caught snippets of MM,but so sorry,all you Flower lovers.

Got to watch Pushing Daisies without interruption last night and I do really like the show! I love the character of Ned,he is so conflicted about what he's doing,but the relationship with Chuck is darling and it should be interesting to watch it develope.

I did watch Friday Night Lights,just because so many of you highly recommended it. You must have had to been watching it before to truly understand all the plots swirling around.Why is Eric in one place and his family in another? Who and why was that guy stalking that girl? Not sure if I will continue to watch or not,too many scenes of just football playing without any interest in what it really was for me.Then again,I was so invested in watching the Indians beat the Yankees,I may have been distracted.

So Sharon..how about those bugs? Did they only bite Yankees? And thanks to Sharon for putting out the news about Flower. And thanks for your comment, Sydney. I had stopped watching the show because of the death of Carlos. I think he had been bitten in a fight and then it got infected and I just couldn't handle the producers not stepping in to help him. Bitten by a cobra? OK. Can't help that. Same with little Shakespeare getting bitten by the puff adder. But just a couple of drops of penicillin in the water trough...that the show provides!!!.. would have probably saved Carlos. Oh well. I know they can't do it. But. One more thing: Do any of you think it is possible that whoever they put the radio collar on becomes the dominant female? So they think they are not interferring, tho.?

As I don't have cable or a dish I had never seen this show until I was at the rehab center with my mother-in-law yesterday. My husband and I got hooked very quickly, we love nature shows. After just 30 minutes I was very saddened by the death of Flower and the baby she adopted. I can't imagine how I would have felt had I been watching this show for any length of time. It was refreshing to come here and see others feel the same way.

No,auntie,they were bothering both teams but only the Yankees were crying their eyes out about it. I can say that was the 10th man on the field that night.....lol!

I was not the one to break the news about Flower,somebody on a previous post did that,but as an animal lover,it saddens me. One of my earliest memories was being at the drive in and watching "Old Yeller" and hanging my head out of the car window so the others wouldn't see or hear me sobbing away when Yeller had to die.I am a big softie that way! RIP,Flower.

I see it was Joy n who passed us the first bulletin about the death of Flower. And Sharon whose team was assisted by "midges". I'm glad I live in Calif. The Yankees were big babies, weren't they?! I went and read that interview about the Meerkats. The observers really do intervene at times. But they rightly point out that Shakespeare survived his snake bite and so they thought maybe Flower would survive hers. Oh well...

Flower was almost my friend, she taught me so many things about meerkats I know from here on Rocket Dog and the others will still teach me about the way meerkats live find food and comunacate but it won't be the same I don't want Flower's legancy to ever end. Thank you for reading

Flower the meerkat.

Flower was a brave meerkat, who sacrificed her life to protect her progeny. Never before was this world graced with a meerkat with such loving devotion as Flower... Flower will be missed, but never fogotten.

I've seen many meerkats in the span of my existance. I've seen old and young, male, female, and shemale, but never have I seen a meerkat as unique and Flower, the meerkat. It was a terrible tradgety which took the life of Flower the meerkat. The world is grieving. I go about my daily routine, seeing friends and family, but the light of joy once visible in their eyes, has diminished. There is no one on this earth who has not been affected by the life and death of Flower the meerkat.

I wise friend of mine once said,
"Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow; a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."
My friend, Shakespeare would have a lot to say about the death of Flower, the meerkat. Unfortunately, he too has met an untimely death, several hundred years ago. But in a lighter tone, a meerkat lives on, carrying his appellation, Shakespeare the meerkat. Shakespeare the meerkat, grieves with the rest of the world, of the loss of a noble meerkat, Flower the meerkat.

It is a sad thing, the death of a meerkat. An event which I had hoped never to witness. The thought of the sight of Flower the meerkat, dying, as a result of a villainous snake's wrath, causes pain in my heart. It is my hope, and the hope of the rest of the world, that we should never witness such a tagic event during the duration of the remaining potions of our lives.

Zaphod, the meerkat... The father of Flower's progeny... Flower will be missed by Zaphod, more than by anyone... His heart weeps for the loss of his love.

Flower is gone.

But as long as Liz, and Axle remain in life, Flower the meerkat will live on. Her legacy will continue. And she will remain forever in spirit, as a guardian angle for those who live on. Her life was not in vain, and nor was her death. She accomplished more in life than any meerkat. And her death was tragic, but not in vain, as Liz lives on, and retains a promising future.

There is no greater sacrifice than one's life, given up for another's whom they love. Flower is gone, but her progeny ramian. She will not be forgotten.

Flower the meerkat was the best meerkat in the world and I will always love her , please everyone please never forget her I don't want her legacy to ever end until now I didn't think of Flower all that great I thought she was mean and cruel to not let Mozart or any of the others have pups but I guess you don't know how much you love someone until they are gone,in my heart Flower will always be with me Flower the Iron lady the queen of the Kalahari the desert's favorite rose I know she is gone now but that doesn't matter she will still be liveing in all our hearts. Flower was always there for me she didn't know it but she was when I felt down in the dumps I turned on the TV and there I saw Flower the meerkat feeding her pups being such a good mother the show just isn't the same with out her there will never be such a nice meerkat in all the lands Flower was one of a kind the best I mean I will miss you Flower the meerkat! every day and every night you are #1 meerkat in my book! I love you I hope you are haveing a fun time in Heavan I know you are haveing fun reuniteing with your lost pups like Bubble and Blossem. I know that now you are in a place where tasty centipede is always on the menu. When Flower died my instinct was to run into my sister's room and tell her in a screaming voice as quickly as I could then run back to the couch and cry it started as watery eyes then I shed a tear then I realy sobb then cry then throw a fit turn off the TV throw down the remote and scream into the pillow I lay there crying for about 20 minuts then I scream and cry and get a glass of water watch the rest of the show, watch Rocket Dog takeover the manor watch the whole world mix and twist and turn. the seconed episode instead of MEET THE WISKERS FLOWER THE LEADER OF THE GROUP I watched MEET MEET THE WISKERS ROCKET DOG THE LEADER OF THE GROUP I lifted my head something is not rite in a second I knew a shed one tear watch the dissaster role in Rocket dog's way It doesn't seem rite without you Flower RIP yes Rest in peace with God and Jesus and all of your pups that left befor you have a nice day and night you are siriusly the IRON LADY

Sharon, you ask a good question about Fri Nights. The first season set it all up, as with most shows, but now that I look at the opener through the eyes of someone who hadn't seen it (instead of my own, as a fan) I can see it wouldn't make much sense! The scope of the show brings in all elements in the Texas town and most of them come together on Fri nights to either watch the game, cheer for the game, or play the game. That was what I liked last season. We saw the struggles of high school kids (not just jocks)and how their family lives directly impact their school lives. The new Mom was the school counselor and she and her hs coach husband (the absent guy) didn't always agree on the best way to solve a situation with students. That was last year, when the guy who didn't live at home was the hometown coach. The boy in the wheel chair was the quarterback, the Jesus/cult girl (who gave a great dinner time prayer) was his cheerleader girlfriend, and the lifeguard girl was a Sophomore, coach's daughter, who was a little fearful of dating. And not that into football or football players. A lot happened since the series premire last year. The team did so well, the coach took a career boosting job in another town, his wife found out she was pregnant, the quarterback was injured in a game, the cheerleader girl had an affair with his best friend and her parent's broke up. I know it sounds soapy, but it addressed many issues that are real and made the viewer see them in an understanding way. It was good writing in other words. There were several things I didn't like about the new season, one of them is having the anti football guy on the team, the murder of the stalker that was just briefly introduced last season and the ditching of the body. Very much against Dudley Dorights (anti football player who is in love with the former bad girl) principles. So, we'll see.

Thanks for writing that explanation of Friday Night Lights Sue!!!! I was trying to get it up to do the same but still have yet to finish a Bachelor recap for Terry in CA!!

I'm a huge fan of the show, think the relationship between the new mother and her husband, as well as teach of their relationship with their daughter is so compelling and REAL. Sharon, you can rent the last season by now in case you care to see some really excellent stuff in that regard.

Thanks so much,Sue,for that recap! It makes much more sense to me now and I am much more likely to tune in next Friday now.I have always liked Kyle Chandler and I recognize Connie Britton from something but can't recall what.

The thing with the stalker,that just showed how things can get out of hand so quickly and then mistakes that can ruin your life can happen in an instant. We all know this is going to come out and then those two kids are going to watch their lives change,probably not for the better.

One more question,please! Why didn't the coaches family move with him to the new job???

Sharon -- Connie was in the original movie version of FNL, playing the same character. I just saw the Kindgom last night at the movies (GREAT)... Both Kyle the newly christian cheerleader girl (also John Mayer's latest 5 second fling) had small parts.

The coach has always had a dream of the bigger leagues. And he finally got the golden offer after he had such an outstanding season newly coaching the small town team last year. Brought it to championship heights while under a lot of pressure from all sides (the fisrt season captures so well why everyone in small towns across texas, and big ones too, are invested for a million different reasons in their local team).

The brass ring is right there, and his daughter says no -- I've been moved a zillion times in my short life and I'm not going to another school again. I'm staying here and finishing (she'd also fallen into her first love with the stammering shy kid on the team). The mother backs her up, saying I love it here. As Sue mentioned, she had settled in to the job of school counselor and was intergral in helping the blonde girl (who was being stalked) get on the right track after some major problems at home and with her on/off again relationship with Riggins, the hunky drunky quarterback... and an lost adn loose mother. She also helped the pretty brunette out in dealing with her troubles adjusting to seeing her future husband, the star quarterback, get terribly injured on the field and struggle with life confined to a wheelchair.

Her work was too rewarding to leave for his job.
But she did not want to prevent his dreams either. So mom stayed with daughter and he went up north a few hours. Obviously she got pregnant somehwere between the end of last season and the first episode! And their daughter is a little estranged from that boy. And the former cheerleader, fiancee to the quarterback (who, btw, she cheated on -- with his BFF Riggins --in the midst of her adjustment) has become born again. He got a job as assistant coach and is using his gift for the game that way.

I hope that's not too confusing added to Sue's. It's amazing how much they fit in to the first season!

The news of Flower's death has only recently been known... and already the world seems a darker place. I go outside, into the desert, expecting to see my friend Flower... But she is gone... into the abyss. Murdered by a snake, for no reason at all...

The snake... The snake of death. Why would God pollute the world with such a wretched murderous creature!? I cry. I cry for Flower the meerkat. For Zaphod. And for their children. Why? Why did this have to happen? The foundation of my world seems to crumble beneath my feet.

Will I ever fill the void in my soul where my love for Flower once resided? I think not. How could I? For Flower meant more to me than my own family! Was my family there to cure my sorrows and boredom? No. Twas Flower who cured me. I will not forget this. I will not rest until the wretched snake that which killed my dear Flower is forced to the grave. And a shallow grave it shall be; not dignified so much as to even be buried I should hope. Leave it's rotting carcass to the birds. The snake deserves no less than death.

This event, the death of my beloved Flower, has me questioning my faith. How could there exist a God who would do something like this? I used to pray for all of the meerkats, every night before bed. I prayed for them every chance I got. The sweet meerkats, living in a world of peril. I prayed for them. I prayed and prayed. But my prayers were not answered. God is terrible!! I do not think he exists. All my life I was taught that as long as I prayed, everything would be alright. But I was taught wrong. My entire life has been a religious lie!! Praying does no good!! There is no GOD!!

My life as I know it is over. I am doomed to live out the remaining portion of my life, in a spiraling depression. Usually, when someone dies, I feel bad, and then feel better over time... But I feel worse with each passing hour. I don't know what to do. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?

I have contemplated suicide. But with no god, what is there after death? What? WHAT, I ask, WHAT?! Nothing!! Flower!! I miss you so much!

There is nothing to do. Nothing, save hunt down that snake. If it still lives, I will see to it that I am the cause of it's death. No one kills one of my meerkats and gets away with it. That snake shall wish it was never hatched.

Join me, my mourning comrades. On the search for the murderer of our precious Flower. To the desert we ride, and shall not return without the head of the wretched serpent. If the snake finds me before I find him, then at least my sould can rest. My life will be over, and my sorrowful soul can be at peace.

Follow me!! To the dwelling of the snake!! We shall not rest!! TO THE DEATH!

Sydney: 'Hunky Drunky' made me laugh. Real is the right word for Friday Night Lights. The new Mom's tears were an example of getting it the way it usually is, instead of how TV often shows things. Hormones and having to deal alone, sometimes tears are the only way. I know small town boosters and gasped when the new coach had 'the' booster tossed from the sidelines. Them's fighting words if I ever heard them in football territory. The new coach also rang true to some I have seen in action. Not a pretty picture, but real. Sue

I miss Flower I with she was as said when I found this she was mearly a meerkat but a famous meerkat that all of the world knows and will always remember her name she was truly the Iron Lady and Queen of the Kalahari I will miss Flower everyday though Rocket Dog has rised to power we all know that even if Flower has passed she is still the Wiskers Leader, the Wiskers honest truly best leader she was a noble leader and took very well care of her pups and it touched my heart when Flower adopted little Axle and to this very day Axle lives on with a strongg heart and is very greatful for Flower and Mitch but Flower for mothering him for a short time but Axle is still greatful, and Liz Flower's last pup ever is growing to a full grown meerkat she holds pride and honer in being one of Flower's powerful pups Flower's name shall be remembered for her noble nest and such you and I both know that Flower was proud of her names and that her legacy won't ever end I have much more about Flower to say but I must move on to Mozart



Mozart
Mozart was always one of my favorites and it surprised me how long she lived by herself it was amazing I don't think we gave her a nick name so I call her Star of the Starsky she was truely the last one to be a starsky and she forgoten for it It broke my heart when it said Willson came to visit Mozart and she was half aten It gave me a sick feeling inside and as I am writeing this I have that same sick feeling when they filmed Willson looking at the camra sad looking I cryed just thinking of a jackle or something eating Mozart makes me cry as I am doing now I have the TV on the camashal with Moart is on I have to go hugf the TV! BRB .......... Oh Mozart I miss you so bad I still have the feeling the feeling crossed between throwing up and like when your dog or cat dies and that chill down my spine Well Mozart had there ups and downs but they cared for each other I will miss them both every day and when I watch redoes of Meerkat manor I will see them and think MOZART FLOWER ALIVE ALIVE MOZART FLOWER ALIVE ALEIVE

IT IS SO UNFAIR! Mozart was my favourite, but i cried the hardest after Flower's death. And to think e WHOLE group split up afterwords, it is really heertbreaking. It's as though we have no right to worry about our everyday lives compared to this. And, also, ieven if all that happend, the show MUST go on no matter what. Why cancel the show after her death? When Steve Irwin, my hero died, his daughter carried out the next generaio show!
