'Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann' Blog Discussion Post

Although I most likely won't be watching the show, I recall a few people were asking for a discussion post to talk about it amongst friends here on the blog. So, here you go!

The show airs Mondays at 8 PM ET/PT in most viewing areas. The official website for the show is here.

A cross between AI and SYTYCD. Seems to have some who can do both, there are a few eye-candies for the ladies!!! Guess we need to see if lessons improve the raw talent.

Bruno and Carrie Ann are being too nice to each other for this to be a war. Hope that changes...

joy n said...

Lots of good dancers. Not impressed with all the singers but, as you said Delee, they may improve. I'll check it out again next week.

Ladies, I agree on the initial impression! But, then I think about how un-impressed I am year after year when AI begins a new season, and there may be hope yet! :)

I will watch again next week to see if things improve!

Well I cant believe it I stayed up for the whole thing.....I loved the way Bruno & CA interacted, payful, funny, agree vs disagree, after all this was the phase they both wanted to pick the best, they worked together....now when they pick their teams the war will begin!
For the most part the singers were raw talent, which is what i think all these contests should be, not someone who has majored in music since they were 3....It was sad to see some of them go, but I cant help but think there are talent scouts right there waiting...

Let's just say that I was underwhelmed. Nobody stood out,IMO,as a double threat. Not one of them is great at both singing and dancing. And maybe that will improve with time, maybe they will grow under the more specific tutoring by their respective coaches. I was stunned by a couple of their picks, girls that were "lookers" but a little light in the "talent".And I agree with delee, those two are being too nicey,nicey...want to see the gloves come off.

meb said...

I guess I was expecting more of a competition between Carrie Ann and Bruno too. AI has weeks of auditions, so they can show more. Since "war" only had one night for all the cities to audition, you really couldn't get a feel for who was or wasn't good.

The young girl who couldn't sing AT ALL should never been given a chance to go to Hollywood (even tho she didn't make it thru to the 14). There had to be at least one more person better than she who they could have sent through to the original 30. I know she improved in her singing, but she definitely was not a singer.

I'm glad that the cute little girl of the 3 friends who tried out didn't make it thru to the 14. That sounds mean, but the one friend who didn't make it thru to the 30 was so hurt...now they can console each other.

All in all...it has pulled me in to watch and see if the CA/B "war" actually begins. I don't want to see negativity, just a clean competition between the two.

I watched and was pleasantly surprised! It is raw talent.....reminds me of the show that was on last spring--"Your the One that I Want". Last night moved so fast it was hard to tell who could really sing; the dancing was easier to judge. I've already picked out a few I liked(don't know their names) and looking forward to next week. I think the gloves will come off next week when they pick their teams......Bruno didn't look too bad in jeans and a open-collar shirt :) and yes, ladies there is definitely something to look at in these guys.....

At the beginning of the show, I felt sorry for them when I noticed that the audition line and the crowd was pathetically small compared to AI's auditions. But in the end, I was surprised that they came out with 14 likable contestants, both from male and female groups.

This has a potential for being a great show only if they use the similar choreographies of SYTYCD show. Yesterday's intitial group performance was so shallow. I know it is difficult to sing and dance but still, they were doing some very basic, non-interesting routines.

Can't judge this one by the first episode though. It isn't typical of what the show is going to be.

Hi All -

Darn, I missed it! I'm still not quite back in the swing of things after the last several months events... plus adding looking for a new apartment all over town to the holiday crunch... I should tivo it at least!

Still have the last e- of Heroes and Journeyman to watch -- which if I didn't have to wait for my dear man to watch with me I'd have seen weeks ago, lol!

Delee, very accurate description, I can see that just from the promos. I like Bruno... he keeps me guessing and laughing. And Carrie is tough and technical so together I think we'll see a good mix.

Now to see how the talent is... from everyone's notes it's hard to tell.

Dla -- I have virtually stopped watching AI, for that very reason, among the other obvious ones thru the endless audition shows. NOT entertainment.

I think I may be bowing out with this show. I watched again tonight but just can't seem to get into it. Enjoy, everyone!

meb said...

Sorry to hear that joyn ... I thought it was pretty good tonight and I like to read your comments. I hate being a skeptic, but you know they already had their picks before the show... When Maryann didn't choose Zack, and she had first choice, I knew it was pre-selected. Bruno had to have taller girls, since he had the two taller guys; and Maryann had to have the shorter girls cause she has the shorter guys... I still don't see a dance "war" but the competition between the two groups should prove to be fun. I love to watch dancing, and they'll probably get a lot better with all the practice they'll be going thru. I'll put up with the singing (of some of them)...others have some good voices.

Well...if I end up talking to myself...so be it.

Anonymous said...

Nah,Meb,I won't leave you by yourself. I have to say though,I kind of agree with Joy,I have been underwhelmed so far with this show.I mean it was obvious to me who was going home, right from the get-go. I knew when they put Corina into this final round, she didn't belong there, same with Chris(???).But there are others that I question, too. I don't like Mariel, just because she has the kind of voice that will overpower any other person on that team. If she can learn to tone it down....maybe she will fit in. Same with...er,whats-her-name...the first girl that Bruno picked. If this was a solo contest, okay, but she tries to outsing everybody and she's not a strong dancer, did you see the thighs on that girl???

I think this is a big tempest in a teapot and they are counting on the lack of new programming to carry them through. Instead of this dreck, they need to be working on bringing back DWTS as soon as possible.JMO

Sharon Meb and Joy n, I was impressed with the guys. The girls left me shaking my head. I too am unsure of this show and how it will evolve into a "War".

All the girls could have gone home last night after watching the men. I guess I like power in dance and voice and the girls are lacking alot. I think it was Phillip who kept flashing his chest...oh please make him stop! Once and awhile fine but it made him seem that was all he had...

I think Carrie Ann and Bruno should have pulled names from a hat. Unfair to who had to leave but oh well!!! Did anyone notice CA's dress was longer this week? Last week when she sat I thought she would pull a Britney SPears when she sat down.

We will see how this shakes out..

meb said...

LOL delee... I know what you mean about Carrie Ann's short dress last week. When the guys hugged her it was a miracle all was not seen.

And Sharon, I too agree with joyn and you about this isn't the best show I've ever seen but I guess it's better than nothin', which may just be our choices.

I got a new HDTV for Christmas and I'm having to reprogram all my shows and I missed that KyleX came back on last night... He is so cute. Anyway, luckily, I went forward on my guide and saw where they repeated it later, so I recorded it to watch tonight. YAY!

Is AmericanIdol back on tonight? Someone said that to me. ???
Well, if so, it's something to watch.

Oh..I taped Medium, so I can watch that tonight too.

OK, I'm rambling... talk later.

Delee said...

AI does return tonight 8-10 pm...always say I will wait until down to Hollywood to avoid the horrendous singers but I still tune in... :)

Too much on tonight...ugh!!!

Anonymous said...

Well, it might not be the best show on TV, but it beats some of these games shows/reality shows!! And anything is better than Donald Trump!

The two that went home were the right ones. I'm not liking Philip who keeps flashing his chest or Kelsey(the blonde from La.). She reminds me of the girls from Texas who are beauty pagent contestants and have Moms pushing them from the time they are little.

I'll miss joy n comments but the rest of us will just have to carry on without her :(

Yes, Carrie Ann needs to add a few inches of fabric to her dresses!!

Sharon--your funny..."did you see the thighs on that girl"...I'm lovin' it and I agree!

meb--I got a new HDTV also. I love it but trying to re-program everything is a b*tch!! I'm still taping on my VCR just in case the DVR doesn't work lol. The picture quality is amazing.

Have a great day everyone and we'll see you next week.

Sydney said...

I'll be here too -- I watched for the first time this week, and I was impressed with the guys and not at all with most of the girls. I liked the girls better when I saw their individual intro tapes, but only 3 sing strongly, and I didn't think any of them killed in the dancing dept compared to the men.

I too was surprised that Carrie Ann didn't pick tall, solid Zach when she had first pick. I personally don't like the blonde boy who se only move is to wink at the camera and also open his top or jacket to show his abs. But last night in the final round, his voice was the best...

I laughed at the end when Bruno himself was dancing... and he made a beeline for said blonde boy with the 8 pack. Methinks there's a little crush going on there, lol.

One thing I can appreciate is the production values. They are sinking plenty of money into the stage, the clothing, hair and make up for the kids (first rate... even the judges(they kinda match) and announcer's clothing are good.

IMHO American Idol kids and judges all look like someone without taste, or experience (or maybe a budget)dresses them. With it's hig ratings, there's no excuse! Just one more of the MANY reason I've stopped watching AI. Not that they'll miss me :-D.

I thought the quality of the dance numbers was pretty amazing -- the guys pulled them off enmasse better. I did feel bad for the song chosen for the first 4 girls. It's a pretty bad song to have to sing and sound good. Maybe they chose it on purpose?

Anonymous said...

ok i missed da auditions but can anybody tell me if there is a girl name monica in there pls?

meb said...

anon...don't know any names yet. Too early... Plus, I'm lucky if I remember any names in the first place. But, I'll keep an ear out.

Sydney said...

Welllll--- have we lost everyone on this chat area? I think I can understand why. I watched this week's show on Tivo tonight and, well, blah. I know how hard it is to dance and sing, and learning so many dance numbers in just a few days is something I could never dream of doing... but the song choices aren't good, so no one's voice shines. The dance numbers are ok (though the first hip hop type number Carrie Ann's group did was pretty basic, as Bruno said), and a few voices stand out, but it was really hard to sustain my interest.

The only group number I thougth was any good was the first one of Bruno's team. I think Carrie Ann's got a more interesting group of characters, but... ok, I'm struggling to come up with more.

DId anyone else watch? Thoughts?

meb said...

Hi Sydney... I finally finished watching my recording of the show too. I tried to watch the whole thing previously, but it just isn't holding my interest. Guess joyn was more cognitive from the beginning than I was when she chose not to watch.

I agree the voices are just not there. Even Zack doesn't seem to be able to project like I thought he would. It'll probably get better as they practice and get better, but I'm really having trouble hanging in.

I also thought that Bruno and Carrie Ann, both being dancers, were going to be the ones doing the choreography...how dumb was I. I know it's a lot of work, but if they use their names, they should have some imput in the dances... not just a lot of "pump-you-up" crap.

AND... while I'm complaining ... practically the whole first hour of the show was a recap of last week's show... what's with that. I don't want to see the same thing over again ... let's see some of the choreography at work. That would be interesting.

I thought Carrie Ann's last number was the best of the night. The final # with all 14 of them stunk so if they don't have time to put something together that's going to entice you to tune in again, they should figure out a different way to end the show.

Meb said:

Totally agree with this and the part about the last number being great and if they can't do it, do something else. The kids moght have more time and energy to focus on pumping up the competitive dance/singing numbers. I'm with you all the way.

Will you watch next week? I too think they can only get better as there are less kids and they get more cohesive as they grow. Maybe we'll all tun back in a few weeks from now and it will be better.

meb said...

Sydney...I probably will watch again next week. If for no other reason than to see who goes home and how they'll handle a team with one less person...suddenly they will be missing a couple... 5th wheel so to speak.

Hey meb and sydney---I'm still watching but in a senior moment forgot there was a blog discussion site!
I commented on the show under Jackie's book review.
After tonight's show I will come back here to do my talking......

Anonymous said...

Can anyone tell me the name of the last song Carrie Ann's team danced to on the 1/28 episode?
Thank you

Anonymous said...

anon. 10:37--that song is "Upside Down" by Diana Ross. It was a hit sometime in the early 80's(I think).

Although I commented on Jackie's other post I will say it again....
I'm still not being "wowed". The girls seemed to struggle tonight and so did Bradley. He is lucky Carrie Ann didn't have to vote for anyone. I did like Carrie Ann's groups first number. It was more of a team routine, whereas, Bruno really showcased Lacey and Tony tonight. Maybe next week.......

Sometimes there is a side bar to get here and sometimes not...not sure why that happens...

It almost seemed like AI's horrible singers last night, off pitch-flat and screaming voices. May give it one more week, but throughly disappointed with this show.

meb said...

Hmmm... I want to like this show, but it just isn't doing it for me. For want of anything else to watch I'll probably stick with it for a little while, but come on... bring on something worth watching. It's like a high school musical (no pun intended and no reference to the HSM production).

Delee, sometimes my "sidebar" is all the way at the bottom of the posts. I have to scroll down past the posts on my computer at work and then past all the other sidebars to get to the one I want. See if that helps when you can't find it otherwise.

Sydney said...

HI -- Can't add anything to your right-on comments but just wanted to let you know I'm reading and here with you. I watched, but had to fast forward through. How can they pick such horrible songs in a key that does not show off either girls' vocal abilities as the song they have to sing for their life for in the end? God, it just makes it that much harder to do what they have to do, these poor kids. They already have their hearts in their throat and to have to sing a song that does nothign for them to survive is just brutal.

I know the business is brutal. The show must go on and they need to learn to perform under those kind of circumstances, but it could be a little easier - to let the kids have their own save me song in their back pocket. BOy, you really gotta want to be in this business. It's HARSH!

I just went thru the TV listings so I could record those things that are new and Dance Wars is going to suffer, as in that time slot I tape Prison Break which is coming back on that night and Kyle XY.

I might be able to catch the end of DW, but I'll miss most of it. Keep posting (those of you who are still watching).

Ooops... I forgot to post this... I just watch the Natalee Hallowell special on 20/20. They haven't arrested this guy yet... Judge hasn't given them a warrant. What's wrong with these prosecutors. Just bring him in to talk, so he can't run.

Boy,I really, really think this show stinks! The ONLY reason I watch is to see how badly they will all do...yikes! I keep saying to myself that surely they could have found more talented people somewhere. Some of these DO have some talent, but, boy,is it raw. Most of them need years of extra training AND experience. This is a tough way to get that. They can be shooting themselves in the foot by doing so poorly on national tv.

That being said(tell us how you really feel, sharon)I could not believe that Bruno would have kept Phillip over Tony last night! He sounds so weak and like a cat yeowling most times! Just because he wears his shirt open to his navel(on a less than manly chest)that is no reason to keep him on.But the one that bothers me most is........Bradley...man,is he bad or what! And it seems obvious to me that the teenys have chosen to vote for Carrie Ann's team,no matter how poor their performances. What a joke!

Sydney said...

OK, can I say it? Bruno has a major crush on Philip -- he has from the beginning. Of all the kids on his team, Philip is the least talented. The first night Bruno picked his team, he was practically dirty dancing with Philip at the end of the show! While he has learned these dance numbers -- and I think we can't forget just how hard it is to learn this many dance numbers in a one week period (the kids said they have on eday only to learn the group opening number)-- he makes horrible "sexy" faces and has one or two basic moves that still work their way into the dance. His body just does that. Untrained. And when he only sang, it seemed he had some talent, But he can't sing and dance well together (most of them can't and I don't blame them -- it's nearly impossible to dance that hard and sing well). He loses his voice with all that exertion.

I knew Bruno would have been a fool to give Zach away -- Zach can sing, dance, is tall, handsome etc...and gets the greatest shouts from the audience. He was the #1 pick of both Bruno and Carrie Ann initially. So he put him in the bottom 2 just for drama, which I understand but also felt a little insulted by as a viewer, but the other guy who was with him was robbed.

From the start I personally fell Lacey OVER-dances... her heels kick too high, her every movement is too exaggerated, her teeth are two white, etc... But she did save herself this week.

Overall, the show would be much better if it were an hour. I think they did it this way to cover for having so little new programming in the can due to the writers strike. But they are losing me! After the other night, I deleted it from my TIVO Season Pass!

Sydney said...

OK, I'm sitting here packing to move with nothing else on TV, so I watched it. Have to say the COnga number was not good. Girls voices sounded good but the dancing was very out of sync. Carrie Ann acted so pleased, I think it was just cuz this is a contest and it's her team. Bruno's 4 danced beautifully on the first number, though What's with Zach not being able to be sexier? Philip actually sang well on that number.

The professionals who came on and did the High School number actually sang as unevenly/breathless/off key as the kids in the contest... so clearly, there's jobs out there for all of them when this is over, lol!
Please keep in mind, it's all easy for me to say while sitting on the couch,

Purrbal said...

I personally was fine with seeing CarrieAnn's team lose last night. I like her team for the most part better but I really like the four remaining kids on Bruno's team.

meb said...

I agree that it's nearly impossible to dance and sing at the same time. And I, too, think they should have kept the show to an hour...

I have to say, after not losing anyone from the beginning, it must have been difficult to lose someone at this point in the competition.

Bruno gets on my nerves, so I hope I don't carry this feeling over into DWTS.

Anonymous said...

I'm a little late in commenting here......
What an odd season- this show started with 12 and now it's going end with 8?? It's lucky for them there was a writer's strike, otherwise, they probably would have been pulled. It had so much potential but just never made me feel any connection with the contestants.

Oh well, one more week...

I'm really a newcomer, just saw last week's episode by chance and caught up the rest online since Monday.

So, what's the reward? Do they get a RECORDING contract? This is Dance War, not Vocal War. I don't get it.

Give them a part in a touring show, like HSM, or reward them with professional training/coaches/manager/agent... something that will HELP them! No matter who wins this, no one is going anywhere from this bunch without a lot of support.

(guilty confession: I adore Philip, and am only watching because of him -- yes I'm an old lady, and "they" knew old ladies like me would love him!)

meb said...

OK...SPOILER if you haven't seen the last episode.

The audience was screaming... Carrie Ann...Carrie Ann... then they announced ... Team Bruno won!

Although I liked the Broadway type of #'s Carrie Ann's team did, I have to admit that Team Bruno had more professional moves.

I didn't watch the whole thing... fast forwarded thu the tape to the end to see who was going to win.

Lahey said the "first" winner ... indicating there might be a second season. I can't imagine! This was not a good show ... not even for "better than nothing" because of writer's strike.

Oh well... it's over. They won contracts??? Don't know what kind. Certainly couldn't be singing.

Philip is a male Marilyn Monroe like hers his sexy face and body splashes lots of light upon the screen.
