TV Newsy Bits - Saturday, February 2, 2008

Meow. No, I didn't do the dirty deed. I just took the photo. Meow.

Happy Groundhog Day! Yes, that "famous" groundhog in Pennsylvania saw his shadow, ducked back in the hole and thusly predicted another six weeks of winter. I think that since I'm close to Staten Island (a borough of NYC, but so not Manhattan), I'll go with Staten Island Chuck's prediction. He declared winter over. While we haven't had much of a winter. I personally don't mind a pass on this winter. Thanks, Chuck!

Now, I hear rumors that there's a groundhog in Trenton in on the forecasting gig, but I don't know what he did. But I was thinking ... what if there was a groundhog in New Jersey around where I live? I can see it now, he emerges from his hole and ...
  1. Says, "How ya doin'" (No, it's not a question. It's a greeting.)
  2. Flashes his gang signs while wearing colors.
  3. Asks for a ride to the mall.
  4. Wants to go down the shore.
  5. And can't give an accurate weather forecast because the voices in his head are confusing him.
Here are today's TV newsy bits:
  • For those of you who aren't watching the Super Bowl tomorrow, there's the The Closer marathon on TNT, Animal Planet has the Puppy Bowl (with Kitty Halftime) slated, Comedy Central has a Scrubs marathon, VH1 has the Celebrity Rehab thing going on, and Bravo has a Law and Order: Criminal Intent marathon.
  • Go Giants! Let it be 18 wins and one giant loss for the Patriots, please. But I can't watch a football game all the way through -- I'll peek at the score now and then.
  • David Letterman had Paris Hilton on the show last night. Unlike the last time when he really went too far with the jokes about jail (you could see she was getting upset), all is hunky-dory between the two once again. Paris also seems to have left a lot of the wildness behind. Hopefully she won't ever be in the position to be behind bars again.
  • Reality TV Calendar (whose pop-up ads are SO annoying) has an article with rumors about Big Brother 9. I expect the cast will be revealed early this week.
  • TV Squad will be embedding and running commentary on the Super Bowl commercials tomorrow night. (No, it won't be me -- remember ... although I want the Giants to win, I'm not into football. I like the commercials, though.)
  • Richard Hatch's appeal of his tax evasion conviction was denied.
Today's musical non-sequitur:
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
-- "Horse With No Name" by America

Just posted a couple of thoughts over on the Celebrity Apprentice entry, but I have to relate a sad kitty story. Roofus has always reminded me of one of my Mom's six or seven cats (black and white). They're all outdoor cats and my mom is elderly and continues to take care of them. They're one step removed from ferral in my opinion. She never goes out of town without worrying about getting back to feed her cats.

One of them got hit by a car this evening. We have a pet cemetary behind the house, where many of our childhood pets were buried, and my brother who's visiting this weekend will bury the kitty that was killed tonight.

My cat is from of a litter of my mother's cats, and I thank the good lord everyday that she's an inside cat with me. She's six now, but probably wouldn't have lived to be two or three if I hadn't adopted her. I think the average life of an alley/ferral cat is around two years.

I hope we see more pics of Roofus in the future to ensure that he/she is safe and sound.

:(

Aw, I'm sorry to hear about the cat. It's not an easy life for outdoor cats. When I was young, I thought cats only lived a few years because ours were in and out of the house and never spayed or neutered. My personal cats since college have been strictly indoors as I move now and then and often live in city environments. My first generation cat of my own lived to be just shy of 20. Teaser was 15 and Scherzo in 15 and doing well.

Bless your mom for taking care of the cats -- she's probably the only human they trust!

I haven't seen Roofus at all, but that doesn't mean he's not okay. There are two feral groups there -- the big-headed yellow tabby strays I've seen, but the ones who look like Roofus seem to be in the ex-Budget Car place a lot.

La la la luh luh luh luh

Luh, Laaa luh.

Sorry --good song. But I date myself...

Thanks for the Closer reminder Jackie - that's one of those that I keep hearing is FBAULOUS and I just have not been able to watch for more than 3 minutes each time I try to get into it. But I will try again tomorrow. I've also been watching Make me Supermodel on Bravo -- It's actaully pretty good -- not much backstabbing but bonding among the models, which is nice to see after all the other reality shows seems to engender conflict. I guess because the focus of the show is the quality challenges, shoots and top notch styling. Anyone else watching this?

And oy, Flav of Love THREE is coming back Feb 11th.

But also due to the Strike, Dexter is coming ot CBS with just 6 minutes edited out (on Showtime it runs iwth no commercials)> I am dying for all the folks her eto give it a go and comment!!! They have cut a few of the Fbombs for network TV but not much else. The concept seems gory but really, the show is not so much.

Monty, I am very sorry to hear about the kitty! And that one of it's siblings has a very wonderful , safe home with you.

I hope that groundhog was wrong this time. I'm looking forward to seeing my crocus' and tulips again.

GO GIANTS!!!!

Hope you have a new sighting of Roofus soon, Jackie, his pix are always a day-brightener.

Richard Hatch will go to his grave still spouting his innocence. I don't believe for a second that he was railroaded, as he claims. I think he's a small, pathetic man. Maybe someday he'll grow up. Apparently, he hasn't yet.

I am beside myself with anticipation of the new Survivor this week and BB coming up next week. Plus, there's talk the writer's strike may be over within the week. Hope that's true.

Monty, so sorry to hear about your Mom's cat. The yard of the house that I grew up in also had a pet cemetery. There was a dog, three cats, a bird and a turtle out there that I remember. Haven't thought about that in years, but I still remember those pets. How nice of your brother to take the time to ease your Mom's heartache a bit.

Punxsutawny Phil did indeed see his shadow...our local news covered it as they are close to that town. HUGE crowds were there and basically it is a party at O'dark-thirty. Now Phil will always see his shadow...there are many-many high intensity lights up on tall poles to make it safe for the crowds. SO in ending, he will always see his shadow...as how can he not!!! Also anyone with brains knows that "SPRING" starts March 20unless the calendar is re-written. Sad thing is Pennsylvania has a ground hog predicting seasons and "Gus" is the spokeman for the lottery!!! Can we say messed up?

I agree with Jackie..."Go GIants", but I doubt it will happen. Commercials ARE the best part of the S Bowl.

I too, Sydney, watch MMA Supermodel. I agree with your thoughts on the show, but I feel conflict will intensify as the numbers dwindle.

We will have 2 new shows on Thurs. Survivor and Lipstick Jungle. Has anyone seen the previews for Baby Borrowers? That looks real interesting as the teen-agers have to tend to different ages of humans each week! That airs 18 Feb.

Monty...so sorry to hear about your mother's cat. I feed 2 cats just to keep them away from my bird feeders, but I look for them often to see if they are still eating, esp in nasty weather. I had 14 squirrels (that I saw) having their daily meal in my backyard. Could not believe it, usually 8. Word is spreading...imao!

Saturday, the TVGN. channel 237 on DirecTV, had a preview of Survivor. The contestants were introduced and Jeff gave his thoughts on each. The show also went behind the scenes to show the development of challenges, the building of sets, incorporation of local traditions, and even set and trash cleanup after the show.

Exile island will have a member of each team go together and receive the clue for the hidden immunity idol together.

It's kind of funny and heart warming that a thread like this can bring back so many memories from childhood. I hadn't thought about our pet's place until last night, and then I only really thought about the cats. We had two dogs and too many cats to count growing up. My father grew up in the country and believed that animals lived outside not inside.

We never had anything other than cats and dogs, except for one hamster. A funny story on the hamster...

My older brother and one of my sisters wanted a hamster. Mom and Dad gave in and bought them one, but it got out of its cage and got into my Mom's hat drawer. Now I was raised catholic and my Mom had a bunch of hats with veils on them to wear to church on Sunday. When the hamster chewed up the veils, Mom made my brother and sister raffle the hamster off at school to a good home, and that was the end of the hamster. I had totally forgot about that until I read some of the comments on blog.

My significant other feeds birds and squirrels. He puts out peanuts, in the shell, for the squirrels and they leave the bird seed alone. He actually has the squirrels trained to take the peanut out of his hand, and has a few Cardinals that fly down to take peanuts that he throws them. It's amazing to see. I always think of squirrels like rats with a fuzzy tail, but its so cute to see them come up to him for their peanuts. And the cardinals, I swear, are the most amazing. He can call, "Hear Red", and within seconds to a minute, there's a cardinal waiting for it's treat.

Thanks for all the warm thoughts and comments. This is such a nice place to come to. :)

Monty, my hubby also handles the squirrels with peanuts in the shells. We also have dried corn (on the cob) that hangs in a container on the tree. Around here, the bluejays love the peanuts, too. I swear, they wait for him to come home, year-round, and fuss outside the door, in the trees, until he throws the peanuts out. They can be very loud sometimes. I take care of the other birds, providing seed and suet. We go through alot of peanuts in the summer, especially, because then the chipmunks (who live under our deck) also feed on them. Unfortunately, we have been plagued with a neighborhood cat that pounces on the birds every chance he gets. I leave food out for him, but he still goes after the birds. We moved and raised the feeder so he can't jump on it, but cats are very determined and he always finds a way. I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions, anyone?

Joyn, I blocked the cats hiding under the deck, now they can not lurk in wait. I can tell when one is afoot outside as at least one of the squirrel's is up in the tree with its tail swinging wildly. I had to change my feeding schedule from early am to after 10 or so, because the jays were waiting as were the squirrels. They steal all the peanuts and I have other food out for the birds. I guess I am trying to say have the feeders far away from a hiding place and my feeders have a shield below them.

joy n said...

Delee, I have the shield and it's been a godsend. It keeps the squirrels and the cats off the feeder. We have lattice to keep them from under the deck. But we do have two big maple trees out there and lawn furniture to hide behind. We'd already moved the feeder away from the low branches, so that stopped the attacks from above.

I'll have to figure out where to move the feeder again, I guess. When the squirrels and bluejays are out there, I hear the warning chatter, too, but that cat is fearless and smart. He changes his schedule and comes back when the big-mouths aren't around. I can move the lawn furn. but not the trees. He doesn't climb them anymore but my hubby just said he hides behind them and waits. (Cat, not hubby) It's a shame because I have a perfect view of the feeder from my LR window now. The only other solution might be to get a dog. Or maybe a recording of a dog barking. Hmmmmm!

Thanks, Delee, I'll work on the hiding places.

My feeder(s) are between 3 large maples, but I had to space it so I can see it from my window. Last year I had it too close to one of the trees and when I looked out a squirrel was on the feeder hanging on for dear life. I chased it away and then watched it jump from the tree to the feeder. So moved it again and have been good since then. I did see a cat hiding behind a tree and chased it off, but I have not seen it there since.

The things we do for our wild creatures! But they give us great joy!!!
