Survivor 38: Edge of Extinction - Season Finale Blog Party
Well, here we are -- season finale time. All but two castaways from the start of the season remain in the game. That's so to speak, I guess. While it's been interesting, it's definitely not a "twist" I hope to see repeated. We have five castaways playing the game with thirteen (!) more over in Extinction. One will be coming back tonight. And, they will need to get rid of three to get to the final three. Um. Okay. Whatever.
I'll be live blogging the major events as tonight's show airs here on the East Coast. Please refresh this page to get the latest news! As always, the real party is in the comments area -- feel free to join in on the fun!
Lifeguard Laurie has been diligently watching y'all in the blog pool. Here are the latest standings:
Gavin Whitson -- Brenda, KelseyNY
Julie Rosenberg -- Delee, MikesGirl
Lauren O'Connell -- Brian, Krysta Gibbon, Sharon N.
Rick Devens -- Auntie Leigh, Merrilee
Victoria Baamonde -- Indiana Jane, Karen in VS, SueGee
Jury & Extinction
Reem Daly -- David, Terry is a Texan, Sharon C
Chris Underwood -- Glenn Allen, Laurie
Aubry Bracco * -- Cheryl in NC, Margo, Petals
Eric Hafemann -- Bizaro22, Pinky, Shannon
Joe Anglim * -- Carol C, Kismet
Julia Carter -- Donna in FL, Monty924, Jennifer
David Wright * -- Dr_Celine, PDX Granny, Renee Buck
Kelley Wentworth * -- Donna in NY, Jenna G.
Dan DaSilva "Wardog" -- Jackie, Nana in the NW
Ron Clark -- Cherry Pie, Judi Sweeney, Rochelle
Aurora McCreary -- Ed in Ohio, marthalight
Let's see how the largest show jury will decide ...
I guess they'll never film the finale in NYC again. They used to rotate between CA and NY.
We open up with a challenge for the extinct. Tied to a rope, through rope maze, obstacle course, untie knots, across a rope bridge, table maze, first to drop two balls gets back in the game.
Wardog, as usual, is lagging behind. He talked such a good game! Ron is slow, too.
Joe, Eric and Aurora are leading. Aurora has one ball in. Joe has one in. Chris has one in.
CHRIS WINS AND RETURNS TO THE GAME!
Jeff sits them all down and tells them that this was a social experiment. He starts off asking Reem her darkest moment. He then asks Joe and the theme seems to be never quitting for him. Onto David and what it's meant for him. He seems to think there's no place like home. Julia is grateful and now realizes how strong she is. Eric is all about his kids and not quitting. Aubry reminder of your true character. Kelley says she thought it was about game, not people and now realizes it's about who you are, not that you win.
They get to not go back to Extinction but only Chris will play the game. Lots of tears.
Live, Jeff calls Joe out. His hair is not in a man-bun. It's wild. Jeff asks him if a player like him can ever win? He asks if he might come back. He does have a feeling he'll come back.
Chris hasn't even met some of the others. He tells them he does have information if people want to come talk to him. Thinking about it, he does have how the jury is leaning. He doesn't want to be immediately voted out. Victoria doesn't know him, but is worried about the two that do know him. He immediately teams up with Rick. But, since Rick backstabbed him before, can it last?
Chris also knows Lauren has an idol (because Kelley told him on Extinction). She's a bit leery. I think she's been a fairly strategic player. She's seriously thinking of trusting him.
Time for the first Immunity Challenge. Race through obstacles, across balance beam, collecting bags along the way, solve combination lock, puzzle. There is a reward of steak and chocolate cake for dessert.
Chris is doing poorly, but coaching Julie.
JULIE WINS IMMUNITY!
She chooses Chris to go with her because he has never had Reward, nor even the merge feast. She then chooses Lauren as the second. That choice now has the others "very wary."
Julie tells us that she invited Chris to try to get Rick out of the game. Chris advises a split between Rick and Victoria because the jury thinks they're best for the end game.
Victoria is telling the others that Chris needs to go because she thinks he'll work with Lauren and Julie. Rick isn't really keen to vote out Chris, but doesn't really trust him. He says he will be playing his idol tonight no matter what. He needs to know if Rick is working with him or against him.
Rick and Chris talk. Chris tells him that he's loyal to him. Rick brings up the bag from Extinction … which contains the half of an idol like we had before. He gives Rick the half-idol. Chris tells Rick that Victoria is on the line. He tells us that he wants Lauren to play her idol for him. She says if Rick plays his, she will.
It's off to Tribal and Jeff's Probsting questions. He first asks Chris how he's adapting. Jeff brings up that Rick was ticked when Julie chose Lauren instead of him. Then he cries. Victoria thinks there's someone other than the easy vote Chris to go. Rick says it's him. Time to vote.
The tally … Rick plays his idol. Lauren plays her idol for Chris.
Rick, Rick, Rick, Chris, Victoria, Victoria
Victoria is gone. She tells Gavin she will vote for him.
In the middle of the night, Rick is up idol hunting. He put two fake idols out there with the notes from the real ones he had previously found. He found the real one! He gives Chris back the half, so now it's Chris and Rick with idols going into the final four. Julie thinks since two idols were played, there has to be another one. Julie finds an idol. Is it the fake? Lauren finds a scroll directing to an idol. (Rick's?) and gets the idol from there. Yep, Rick tells Chris that's a fake one.
Immunity Challenge time. Way up over the water, race over obstacles over the ocean gathering bags, solve puzzle.
Gavin and Chris are in the lead. Chris drops behind. Gavin and Rick in the lead.
RICK WINS IMMUNITY!
Rick is beside himself with joy. He knows that they were all after him. He tells us both the Julie and Lauren idols are his fakes. He wants to play his idol on Chris if Gavin takes him final three and doesn't do a fire challenge. So, he's getting them to vote Chris who has a real idol. Julie is thinking since there were three idols, her own might be fake. Rick and Chris must decide which person will go home. The power is in their hand. They are tossing between Julie and Lauren.
Off to Tribal once again. Jeff talks about Rick's 4th immunity win and asks if it's due to the target on his back. Chris says he hopes his new bonds will get him through. They're talking about all the IFS going on. Trust issues are going on.
Time to vote …
The tally --
It's the last night to play idols.
Julie tries to play the fake idol. Nope, no go. Lauren plays the fake idol, nope for her, too. Rick plays his real idol for Gavin. Chris plays his real idol for himself.
Chris, Chris, Chris, Lauren, Lauren.
Lauren is still giggling about all the fake idols and says it was so well played. She goes off wishing the others good luck.
The final four are Chris, Rick, Julie and Gavin. Both Chris and Rick were voted off before and won their way back in from Extinction.
Immunity Challenge time once again. Negotiate rocky walkway balancing blocks on a rope suspended pole, first to spell Final Three wins. Rick is doing horribly. Chis is leading. But, if the blocks drop, they have to start all over. He has all his blocks up and is retreating to the start.
CHRIS WINS IMMUNITY!
He gets to choose who will sit next to him and which two will fight for the third slot in a fire-making challenge.
Rick is a bit worried about Chris having control. He doesn't want to do fire. They do have practice time with the fire. He tries to convince Chris. Not so convincing, Chris thinks that Rick would be the million dollar winner over anyone. Chris is working with both Gavin and Julie to improve their fire skills. He wants them both to stand a chance to beat Rick.
Going into the final Tribal now.
Both Gavin and Julie say they'll go fire. Gavin wants to go against Rick.
Chris wants to have no regrets. He gives his necklace to Julie and HE will do fire against Rick. Wow. Julie and Gavin will be a part of the final three.
CHRIS DOES IT! HE'S IN THE FINAL THREE! Well played.
Rick Devens is now on the jury. Jeff talks to him live and Rick gets a standing ovation from the crowd.
Gavin, Julie and Chris are enjoying the fancy feast of a breakfast. Julie tells us she thinks she got to the final three because of the relationships she formed. Chris pleads his case to us. He doesn't have to convince me. At this time, he deserves the win in my opinion. Then Gavin wants us to think he's such a strong social player and adaptable.
Tribal jury time …
Outwit -- David asks strongest ally. Gavin says Victoria Chris says Rick. Julie says Ron and Eric and a secret relationship with Lauren. Chris is asked about social relationships on Extinction, he says providing food. Gavin says his social game was his strategic game. He denies being anyone's goat. Julie says she was going to use her emotional weakness as a strategy. Julie seems to be knocking some of the jury in pleading her case. Hmm. She needs to shut up. Gavin and Aubry click.
Outplay -- Rick wants to know why so few found idols. Gavin said he looked a little. Rick wants to know if Chris had any advantages coming back. Chris brings up the final move. He also says you can't screw people around. His relationship with Rick was real. Gavin disagrees. Gavin is acting like Extinction is nothing. Wardog says it's about people playing better.
Outlast -- Gavin says pretty much what he told us. He was playing for his family. Chris wanted to play a perfect game but got blindsided. When he came back he had to do the best move every time. Julie goes on about the life-changing personal journey.
Time for the vote, but a commercial first.
Finally to the live show. We'll be in for a short reunion bit tonight. Just over a half-hour left.
The tally …
Gavin, Chris, Gavin, Chris, Gavin, Chris, Gavin, Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris …
Yep, I called it.
CHRIS WINS!!!
Congratulations blog pool winners Laurie and Glenn Allen!
Reunion tidbits --
David Wright and Cochran are writing the CBS All Access Star Trek show
Jeff finally mentioned that he always calls Kelley "Wentworth."
Gavin again says "whenever" in place of the correct "when."
Rick wins Sia's award of $100,000. (She's done that a few seasons now.)
Next season will be …
Survivor: Two winners return Sandra and Boston Rob. Won't be competing, live on own island and mentor new players. Boot Camp. Survivor: Island of the Idols.

This challenge is TOUGH
Slow and steady
Oh this looks so frustrating.
1 2 3 and they all fall down!
wow!
Come on Chris. Steady, steady
I would never get through this...
Chris my Pool person on last Block to win Immunity. Now needs to get back.
I think this is throwing Chris off.
I can't look!
wtg Chris!
That was nerve crazy lol
WOW
OMG, that was crazy
and he'll turn on Dev in a hot minute. Heck, he already HAS turned on him.
Ohhhh man I think I held my breath for two minutes!
Chris My Pool pick goes from Extinction to Final Tribal.
Okay guys, I hate to say this, but if he's smart, he'll cut Devens out. Devens will beat him.
Devens has beaten all the odds. He's had to save himself over and over again.
I grudgingly agree with you Penny
I have that feeling too...I think Chris thinks Devins will win...so what kind of player is Chris? Will he wimp out and not take the one player that has the biggest chance at beating him in the end or man up and take him because he's his biggest competition?
I have never won a pool. The closest I came was second place in Big Brother with Tyler!
Here we go lol
Dev's only shot at anything now is Fan Favorite. I hope they have it.
I hope they at least ask him back.
Trust NO OnE! Practice making fire, don't waist your breath. Chris has already made his decision.
If I were on the jury, I don't think I'd vote for Chris in the FTC. He was out of the game for the majority of it.
I can understand how Chris feels. He knows if he comes up against Devens, he will lose.
Poor Dev
Everybody starting fires lol
But, so were most of the jury, Monty. They had no advantage. They were starving just like everyone else.
I'm with you Monty I wouldn't vote for Chris either......no offense Glenn!!
wow
I wonder if Chris really thinks he has all the jury votes......
Well, that sucks!!
What???
WhhhhhAatttt lol
OMG! What a foolish, foolish man.
WHAT!!!!!!!!!
What??!! Ok didn't see that coming! He's tring to pad his resume!
WOWOWOW
c'mon DEV!!!!! You can do it!!
I think he made a big, big mistake.
idk. That is a tough tough call. Not sure it really is going to matter. He might have been better off hoping for a bitter jury against Devins.
Wow Chris gives up final Tribal tribe to go against Devins. I hope my player did not make the worst Survivor choice ever.
Bigger the risk....bigger the reward. Pretty ballsy or just dumb
My heart is POUNDING! Go Devins Go!
Is the jury watching all this?
I wish Jeff would just shut up. I really, really do.
Yes, the jury is watching.
Chris got it
You know Devens' heart is pounding. All this work.
I don't think they can see them, SueGee
I can't breathe!
Damn
DAMMIT!
not fair :(
Aww! Devens played one hell of a game!
WOW! Amazing! Poor Devens. All this work and dang.
Thank I’m not happy about Julie being in the final...
DAMMIT!!! UGHHHH!
Ladies & Gentlemen - this year's Survivor winner: Chris.
G'nite. My neck is killing me. I have to lay down, the show is over.
Love you guys, thank you Jackie.
They were behind the jury. Some could see, some couldn't.
Chris earns his way back. That move should win the votes from Jury. His time from extinction plus the boldest move should give my pool pick the resume to win.
Hope you feel better, Petals.
Nite Petals. Feel better!
No SO UNFAIR! Wanted Rick. The other people are so mean to him!
Nite Petals
Good night, Petals!
OMG! All this time they tried getting him out, it's by fire. Dang.
Will be an interesting vote...
Chris should have friends on the jury. It really all depends on how they feel about his jumping back into the game late. Of course, they were on extinction also, so they may be sympathetic.
Awww standing o lol
Was their a fan favorite vote?
ooops there
I do think that was an amazing game move for Chris. Rick would have won against anyone else in the four. Now Gavin and Julie will have a hard time beating Chris.
No fan favorite that I saw. But, then again I didn't go to the website much because there was no Ponderosa.
After what Chris did putting his entire game on the line to make fire against Devins, coupled with the fact he was on extinction island with alot of the jury I think out of these three he has the win. I belive Devins will at least get American's Favorite and I believe we will see him again.
I probably wouldn't vote for Chris if I were on the jury, but I think they will.
Well, IDK if their is an America's favorite this season. Just assumed their would be one.
I'm happy for Gavin getting to the final three
I can’t believe it either, Julie
I'm not going to be mad at Chris. I don't know how many times we, as fans, have called people foolish for taking the best to the finale. I think we were all rooting for Rick. He over came so many obstacles. They were after him every single TC. They are there to win, not to come in second.
I don't see why anyone, including Rick himself, should be "mad" at Chris. That was an amazing risk and game move. And, it was giving Rick a chance to win. Why would anyone be mad?
Thing is, Chris survived on Edge of Extinction. It was brutal. They had nothing there. They starved, too. Most of the jury is from Edge of Extinction. They know what he went through with them. I think Rick worked hard to stay in the game. I feel badly for him, but I wouldn't want to go against him.
Agreed
Exactly
Jackie, there are some fans who believe if Chris wanted to beat the best, he should have taken him to the finale and beaten him that way. Thing is, he could not beat Rick. There was no way.
Uh oh!
I feel badly for Devins, however, in the end Chris didn't wimp out IMO. So with that said, Chris, for me earned his way back in legit with that last move. He gave him and Devins the equal chance to ge to the final. Devins wasn't sidelined by Chris. So out of the three that are left I feel Chris has a strongest chance at winning.
Chris 1st.....Gavin 2nd (maybe close)…….Julie 3rd
Right now, I think Gavin is going to win.
The Edge of Extinction took the OUTWIT aspect out of the game. I hope they don't do this again.
Gavin made a good point
Yes, they just made my argument.
I agree, Monty.
Well said, its about what you do with the cards you are dealt with in this game. This season extinction was in play. Chris with his last few days did his best with what he had. Julie just won a few comps and did no big moves, what did Gavins do again...I forgot...
I don't know if they'll give someone the million $ who was not actively in the game. They were out of the game, but they didn't compete every 3 days.
Will Julie get a vote???
Jeff needs to calm down lol
Its a tough call. I respect what Chris did at the end but it's hard to overlook how long he was on the sidelines and out of the real game.
Ooops, meant to say, they really weren't out of the game, but they didn't compete every day.
I think it will come down between Gavin and Chris. Both deserving, but I'd vote for Gavin, lol. I hate to sound like I'm ragging on Chris, but he only played 12 days out of the 39 and Gavin played every single one of them. :)))
He really wasn't on the sidelines, Ed. They starved just as much as those actively in the game. They slept on the same material and ate rice like the others. He just didn't compete every 3 days.
Julie does not get a vote, she is a finalist
My poor daughter has to be up at 5:30 and has been expecting them to have the winner announced by now!! They have no more after show anymore!
I just don't like it when they do stuff like this. Once a person is out, they should be out.
There it goes again, they cut the reunion short. Dang.
So, Penny … Chris is at fault for not wanting to sit next to the almost 100% winner and deciding to duel him for the right? Even risking his own game to do so? I say brilliant move on his part. If you were him you'd just let Rick win, I guess.
Will Julie receive a vote to be more clear...
Penny to me sidelines is a football analogy. Chris was in the game but not on the 'field', not in the 'real' game. Truth be told Devin would have been the easy vote.
I think they vote Gavin. I could be wrong, but I do not think they'll give it to Chris he wasn't actively playing.
Julie might get a vote from one of her besties, but I think not
Yep, Devin would have been the easy vote.
Wow. They must have respected his play.
This really was a good season
My First ever Pool win.
Congratulations Chris and Glenn and all the Pool Winners. Happy that Gavin got the second place. Made the final reading of the vote exciting and not predictable. :)))
Congratulations Glenn!
I thought so!! And Glenn Allen for the win!!
Congrats Glenn & Laurie!
Night everyone!! I have things I must do before the show comes on here. Next week it is back to back TAR shows...and I may or may not make it. Travel day to Iowa!!
Squeegee
I did like this season. I just didn't like the extinction. Good for Chris. He'll go down as the first player to ever win after being out of the game for so long.
Chris made a million dollar, all in move, and it worked. It won me over.
Night SueGee
They always look so different cleaned up
I really respected Chris when he decided to do the fire challenge with Devins. Most wouldn't do that.
Congrats Laurie and Glenn! Pretty good season all together I thought. I'll catch everyone next week for TAR. Have a wonderful week everyone. Thank you Jackie for another fun season with friends! Goodnight all!
Yes! That is so great!!
Congratulations Laurie who won the Pool with me!
Welp, Rick got 100k … better than the fan favorite prize ever was.
Oh so their is a favorite player of sorts. 100 grand...that ain't to shabby. Of course it would be Devins, good for him!
Thanks Everyone!
And they've gained their weight back, Ed. :))
Well, I'm going to head out here. I have some work to do. It's been a fun season and thank you again Jackie for putting up with all of us.
Congratulations again to Glenn and Laurie
Congrats Laurie. I couldn't remember the other person in the pool for Chris. I was too lazy to go to the main page. LOL.
Jackie, thank you, thank you so much. I love this. To give us a place to talk is wonderful of you. Give Vincent a hug for me.
Thanks Jackie and everyone have a great rest of the night !!!!
Since there was edge of extinction, how much do those on the jury get?
Penny - I don't know. I know the final four each win something and I believe everyone gets a stipend of some sort for the 39 days, more for the jury (usually). Even in regular seasons, they have to hide those who leave before jury, so they need to pay them something.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Thank you, Jackie.
Thank you, Jackie!!
Interesting.
Wow Sandra and Boston Rob on their own Island and they will coach the new Players. I like this idea. It is similar to the Big Brother season when they had coaches.
Thank you all for hanging out this season!
Turn out I was happy with the ending. Glad Rick won somethimg! And I think even though the time was short they cover more reunion then the last few years!
Also thanks for everything Jackie!
I think that the edge of Extinction contestants should have been let back in earlier because I don't even remember anything about Chris congratulations that he won but I felt bad for all the other ones that were in the game till the end and had no shot because like I said I don't remember much about Chris because he was let go earlier in the game and you build a rapport with all the other ones just saying maybe next season if you have something like that you let them back into the game so you can kind of let them work their way back to the top not right at the end not kind of fair
Checking to see if this works.
